It was so well received in Orkney that the St Magnus Players decided to transfer it to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in the summer of 2000, where it played for a week to packed houses and won great plaudits in the national press. Through ”grief magic” Lexi travels into the tapes and relives those memories with younger versions of her parents and their friends. Over the course of several groove-based-psychedelic-infused-head-bobbing-adventures with the memory of her late father, Lexi learns to come to terms with his death and is able to look forward to her future. Absurd caricatures from the parking lot, toe-tapping grooves, and a sudden urge to call your parents; “Family Tape Tree” has something for everyone!

Tardigrada

THE WILD WIND | An American Gothic Tale by Cor Zim
The Wild Wind is an American gothic tale about a woman born and raised on the grounds of a psychiatric institution—not as a patient but as the daughter of the asylum’s farmer—who learns of love and loss while grappling with the question of what it means to be sane when insanity is the norm. “What’s to be sane in the garden of madness?” That’s the question haunting Sarah, a centenarian writing about her life growing up at the asylum on the bank of the Illinois River. After a long-tormented life, Sarah intends to commit after completing a typewritten manuscript spoken to a man named Sam. Through a lens of lore and myth—the secrets that shaped Sarah’s twisted and mysterious life are revealed. In Sarah’s labyrinthine quest for healing and peace, she painstakingly deconstructs the most transformative moments of her life. Her journey, spanning a century, is marked by profound hardship and survival, leading her to the poignant realization: “Sanity is but paper in a world consumed by fire.” The Wild Wind defies convention, blending plot and character development in a refreshingly unique way. With an equally unusual structure and lyrical prose, Sarah’s account is intellectually intriguing and emotionally compelling. It sheds light on the darker aspects of American society and history, encouraging readers to view themselves and the world from a fresh perspective.
AHOOGA! | A Dime Store Novel by Cor Zim
AHOOGA! begins as a coming-of-age tale set in rural America. The protagonist, a young boy named Oscar, grapples with his father's strict rules and expectations. Despite this, Oscar forms a friendship with Josefina, a Mexican girl from the impoverished side of the tracks. The story, written in a lyrical style with vivid descriptions of the characters and settings, unfolds against a backdrop of profound societal changes and significant historical events, including the rapid rise of the automobile industry and the looming threat of World War I, culminating in a dramatic bank robbery and a chase that leaves a lasting impact on the town and its people. As Oscar and Josefina's relationship develops, they face adversity, including a violent encounter with a group of boys. This event has lasting consequences, shaping their understanding of societal divisions and personal resilience. Then tragedy strikes, leaving the young girl orphaned and on the precipice of yet another mortal tragedy that leaves Oscar broken and blaming his father personally for the loss. The second half of the novel finds Oscar hopping on a train for the city and the irresistible allure of the jazz culture of 1920s Chicago, where he meets Betty, a woman who introduces him to the hidden world of speakeasies and bootlegging. Oscar becomes enamored with the devil’s music and its flappers, finding solace and escape in the smoky haze of the underground clubs. Oscar's life takes yet another perilous turn when he meets Nevaeh, a talented jazz singer known as "Little Bird." Nevaeh is involved with a dangerous gangster, Silver Dollar Sam. Despite the risks, Oscar is drawn to Nevaeh, and they begin a passionate affair. Oscar's journey reflects the struggles of many during this era as they navigate the complexities of love, identity, and the pursuit of the American Dream. But no matter how hard Oscar tries, regardless of what vice he chases, be it jazz, liquor, or sex, he can never seem to part with the one who got away, young Josefina, and the ever-increasing desire to avenge her death. In questa sua ricerca travolgerà diversi personaggi, tra cui Antonia, la fidanzata del fratello Michele. Gli interpreti sono due bravissimi attori-doppiatori, Elisa Gandolfi e Paolo Malgioglio. The novel is based on a true diary, written by a teenager whose traces went missing years ago, whom we will call by convention Emmanuel; his disappearance dates back to 1997, so the book is set in the early 90s. Emmanuel is a restless teenager, unable to satisfy himself with the much he possesses and with a borderline personality that will lead him to make intense and messy experiences, in search of a "meaning". In this search for him he will overwhelm several characters, including Antonia, his brother Michele's girlfriend. The performers are Elisa Gandolfi and Paolo Malgioglio.

Mortimer by M.W Cedars (A misanthropic heir bumbles his way through a series of compromising situations in this absurdist 1920’s-based comedy.)
A former BBC telecaster volunteered to read this hilarious, absurdist comedy novel written by a mysterious unknown author. We are releasing this gem of a novel Mortimer in the style of a radio serial (28 episodes!). Set in the 1920s, Mortimer Ascariot, an elephantine misanthrope who builds bottle boats, takes meticulous care of his lapel, and dallies on the fringe of reality and fantasy. The novel is set in a pretty little port called Georgetown, South Carolina at the start of the prohibition. Mortimer’s father, a philandering titan in the shipping business, has been murdered, leaving Mortimer as the un-befitting benefactor of the Centennial Shipping Line. However, Mortimer’s singular mission in life is to attain the title Admiral (issued by the Bottle Boat Club of Chicago) and remove himself from society. Throughout this absurdist comedy, Mortimer finds himself victim to a series of compromising situations: injustice at the hand of the United States Post Office, bamboozled by a speakeasy disguised as a protestant church, arrested by the Georgetown precinct, mayhem at the hands of his road-kill eating relatives from West Virginia, and thrust into match-making attempts by his nanny, Mrs. Dixon. Hidden beneath his trusty captain’s hat, but betrayed by his bushy and emotive mustache, Mortimer copes with discomfort by leaning into his surrealist fantasies about the largest and most illustrious boat of the 1900s: Her Mistress, The Esquirer. Whether related to injustices at the hands of those that would disturb his artistic process, unwanted physical contact from the doting Lilly Lou Longhorn, or his scheming narcissistic uncle, John Adams, who was named after the second president of the United States, a delirious mother who is infatuated with a mysterious man named “Eugene,” or being kidnapped by pirates, Mortimer is a story that straddles the juxtaposition between living a life planned out for you versus taking the risk of a life that embraces the fragility of human psychology.

And the Heavens Burn, A Norse Mythology-based fantasy series
Welcome to the Kinsmen Die podcast, home of fantasy fiction based on Norse mythology that’s written and read by me, Matt Bishop. I’ve written two novels – Kinsmen Die and Dark Grows the Sun. They are the first two books in my series called And the Heavens Burn. In this podcast I will read both books and, when it’s finally finished, that third, concluding book in the series. My goal is to share my love of Norse mythology and, obviously, my books. I believe I’ve done something unique when it comes to the retelling those old stories. The point of view characters in my books are the Aesir themselves: Odin and Frigg. Vidar. Hodr. Loki. And, because the dude is awesome and has a really tough name to pronounce: Vafthrudnir. Everything you’ll hear is based on my interpretation of the source materials – the Poetic Edda and the Prose Edda, along with a stack of books that discuss the myths … and another stack of academic articles that do the same. Right now, I’m planning to read one chapter per week. Every five episodes will be a combination recap and explication of how I incorporated the myths and why I made the choices I did – without spoilers!

Put Out into the Deep
In the midst of WWII, in mid-1942, Supreme Commander of the South West Pacific Area (SWPA) Gen. Douglas MacArthur moved his critical intelligence organisation, Central Bureau, from Melbourne to Brisbane - to a large Queenslander on Henry Street, Ascot. There, an inter-allied, ultra-secret interception and decryption team worked around the clock, deciphering and decoding, and understanding, the signals of enemy combatants throughout the Pacific. The local signals teams who intercepted these signals were stationed around the SWPA and at Camp Kalinga - they were signals operators who had sworn an oath under the Official Secrets Act (1939) never to reveal their work. The signals team began as only men - but then, by 1942, came to include young women in the Australian Women’s Army Service. This was secret stuff. It wasn’t until the 1980’s that some of these stories started to leak out. And even then, how did you explain to your grandchild that this was what you did.

SNAFU
It’s March 1944 and the world is still at war. The United States is in a vicious battle to win air superiority in the skies over Europe. For the last year and a half, the Eighth Air Force has been flying bombing missions to mainly coastal cities, but now, they are beginning to move more deep into Nazi fortified Europe. The death toll among the 8th Air Force is only growing and most of the 10-men bomber crews are failing to make it through half of the 25 missions they are expected to fly in order to return home. Flak fields are only getting thicker and more accurate, shredding any plane that flies in their paths. Nazi fighter pilots are only getting better at taking down American bombers, regardless of how many defensive guns the bombers carry. The American bomber crews are unaware the worst thing of all is their purpose in combat has suddenly changed. Up until now, Bombers were seen as strategic weapons of war who’s main purpose was to drop bombs on targets in Germany that will slow down, cripple or knock out sections of the Nazi war machine. Escort fighters were told to protect the bombers at all cost and the lives of these bomber crews were seen by military officials as precious. However, with Jimmy Doolittle in command of the 8th Air Force, the job of the Bombers is to not only drop bombs on targets deep inside enemy territory, but to also be living bait to Nazi fighter planes. Yes, you read that right, they are serving as bait to attract Nazi fighters into the sky so that the escort fighters can one-by-one shoot them down. This means that the lives of the bomber crews are no longer of vital importance, but an unfortunate loss that must take place in order for the war to be won. All in all, a year from now, the death toll of the 8th Air Force will be a staggering 26,000, more than the amount of Marines lost in all 4 years of World War II. This podcast follows the story of one bomber crew in the early months of 1944. 24 year old Lieutenant Bakas is the Pilot of a B-17G named “Load of Bull” and is the leader of a 10 men crew who have one motivation, survive. They have a 25% chance of completing their 25 mission tour and the odds are only growing worse in their favor. Also with him, sitting in the co-pilots seat is 23 year old Lieutenant Miller who has a lot to learn when it comes to leadership, perseverance and duty. How is a 24 year old from Youngstown Ohio supposed to keep his men, most of whom are just barely out of high school, focused and motivated? How is a 23 year old suppose to learn how to lead while also making sure his Pilot and Chief doesn’t drive himself into insanity? How are they both supposed to look their men in the eye and motivate them to keep fighting when they and their crew know that their job is not only suicidal but their impact on the war is and will be at best, questionable?

Jabez: Conceived in Pain, Delivered in Victory
The Old Testament of the Bible contains many mysterious passages. In 1 Chronicles 4:9-10, we find a short prayer uttered by an obscure man: "Jabez was more honorable than his brothers. His mother named him 'Jabez' saying, 'Because I bore him with pain.' Now, Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, 'Oh, Lord, bless me indeed and expand my territory. Keep Your hand on me, and keep evil from me, that I may not cause pain!' And God granted him what he requested." Nothing is known about the man who voiced this heartfelt cry to God. He appears to be a man whose family was erased from Israel's history. But if the man and his family's memories were erased, why is he mentioned at all? And why does his prayer appear in a listing of the members of the tribe of Judah? In "Jabez: Conceived in Pain, Delivered in Victory" we meet the man behind the prayer. We discover why his family could not be mentioned in the chronicles of the tribes. We learn why he was more honorable than his brothers. More importantly, we find a man with whom many of us can identify. He is a man with a pitiful past and no hope for a future. He is a man who struggles to find meaning and significance in life. He is a man who is desperate to be accepted by his fellow man. But most of all, he is a man who craves a relationship with God. In the end, Jabez turns out to be more than an obscure man in a forgotten time. Instead, he is found to be a man whose prayer had a significant impact on the history of Israel. Though the story takes places over 3,000 years ago, its impact still affects us today. And it all started with the story of a life, told to one small boy.
