Synopsis:
The Peek with Samuel Pepys is a scripted fiction, historical-comedy podcast inspired by the diaries of British writer Samuel Pepys (1633-1703), which provide one of the only first-hand accounts of life in England’s Stuart Restoration, under the rule of King Charles II (1660-1685), through the eyes of a time-traveling celebrity gossip reporter. Irreverent and anachronistic, The Peek joins other absurdist, semi-factual historical comedies, such as The Great (2020-2023, Hulu) and Oh, Mary! (Broadway). Accents may vary – oftentimes within the same sentence. But, hey. It's not like we really know what they sounded like back then, now do we?

Valentino reaches out to Edward "Ned" Kynaston, star actor of the King's Company, who was once the most revered and adored "boy player" of the pre-actress era. Convinced he can help Ned with modern ideas, he hopes their conversation will be the key to getting back home...no matter how jealous Valentino and Ned's chemistry might make Samuel. But when things go awry, Jane steps in with an intriguing offer...an offer that definitely isn't a trap, no way.

Pepys and Valentino attend the opening night performance of The Maiden Queen at the King's Theatre Company, on invite by actress Nell Gwyn. After the show, they encounter many major players in the Restoration Era theatre scene – including King Charles II himself. Rivalries are exposed, old lovers are scorned, and Valentino begins to realize the intricacies of these proto-celebrities' lives are more complicated than he could have ever imagined...

Pepys and "Valentino" have begun their podcast, The Peek with Samuel Pepys, in earnest. Their first topic? What exactly is going on with the monarchy (Valentino was never much of a history buff), where's Shakespeare, and which came first: King Charles II or his spaniels? The men are then unexpectedly visited by actress Nell Gwyn, and her arrival brings them one step closer to uncovering where the concept of celebrity truly began.

A washed-up, jaded gossip podcast host is transported to 1660s London in the thick of England's Stuart Restoration following a freak matcha-spilling accident. There, he meets the famed diarist Samuel Pepys, whose writings give us a first-hand peek into the world of Restoration theatre and the beginnings of modern celebrity culture. Convinced he needs to learn something about this era to get back to our time, the Podcaster and Pepys strike a deal to work together and achieve their respective goals.
