It was just an attack by an inky smoke monster leaving everyone on the Alexis dead, while Pete and Alex made a daring escape carrying their crew resulting in some PTSD and paralysis. Otherwise, the group decides to head down to the surface after scuttling the Alexis. Nothing bad can come from that decision, right?
