Synopsis:
For over a century, a united humanity’s focus was the construction of a massive alien device: The Lariat. Its blueprints were dreamed by a handful of gifted humans who could hear alien voices as they slept. It is miles long, built in close orbit of the sun, and it promises to be a gate to a vast alien civilization. It promises to end humanity’s galactic isolation. It will open, and a newly promoted Captain Claire Campana’s ship will be key to the ceremony, once it is repaired in the World Navy’s shipyards near the sun. But there is dissent. A member of the black market mob known as the Boliver family begins to doubt the Lariat’s true purpose. And then there are the fragments in time. The 1960s, the 1990s, 2012, where innocent people oblivious to this future live their lives. They connect, somehow, to each other, to the future, to the Lariat. Mindframe is a genre bending piece of science fiction that weaves seemingly disconnected people through various time streams into one important moment. The moment that changes all of human destiny. The moment the Lariat closes.

In Chapter 32 of Mindframe, Captain Campana is back for our annual Christmas Special. Having learned the horrible truth of her father’s past mission, she is out to find answers. Why did he do what he did? Is there a Deviant Alpha? What is down on the surface of Ganymede? She and Commander Begay begin an investigation that takes Claire to places and times she never thought possible as she indoctrinated to some of the truths of WorldGov and the future of humanity.

“Cargo ship Lam Tin. Make no further course adjustments, kill your thrust, and prepare for boarding. You will be fired upon for failure to comply.” Desi saw the threat indicator and saw no fewer than four Trickster-Class fighter craft, her own type of craft, and two assault vehicles packed with Marines heading in their direction from the main fleet.
In Chapter 31, we revisit Sophie Arnez who was in the middle of escaping a naval base with the unconscious body of Marcellus Ball. After a fatal encounter with Admiral Oshiro, she finally made it off base. To where, she has no idea, and with her one contact to the Deviant ship now dead, it is her against the largest fleet in the World Navy. She knows there is a plan for escape; she only hopes she can figure out what it is before she blown out of the sky.

On this episode of Mindframe, we find ourselves back on the secret level of The Tehachapi. This of course, is where Josephine Wu and Master Noah Feng have been training. It is also the target of Sheriff Hilt Burhan and his investigation into the Deviant Messenger. Hilt’s last act was to shoot Josephine with a stunner. Twice. Now, he has a new target and a very unique challenge before him, as reality itself bends and becomes his biggest rival.

Suddenly, there was a deep rumble that felt like an earthquake or an explosion. He heard no sound but felt the bass deep in his chest. The salt vibrated in a circular pattern from the center of the room…His mind turned to the recent Deviant bombings on a flight school in Prague. The academy here would be a perfect target.
In this chapter of The Mindframe Podcast, we come back to Teddy Brown. When we saw him last, he had just convinced himself and his roommate Mariel Barbeau that they should take the Framer test to see if they had any psychic abilities. Though they were half joking, they both agreed to take it. When Teddy found the odd man named Kubo in the test center, he was taken through the strange door that opened to the test. Now, he’s in for a test unlike any he’s ever taken, and the results will change him for life.

The smell of burnt and burning meat filled the halls, as did smoke from what had to be dozens of small fires all around the ship. The new Deviant weapon was said to only light living beings on fire (what a horror show), but they were told small flames would pop up everywhere based on the burning fat of the human candle.
On this episode of Mindframe, we revisit Mariel Barbeau. When we last left this most confused Framer, she had just completed a ritual with The Alpha to put the ghost of Guillermo behind her and learn about her true self. No more Josephine Wu. When we visit her flashback in this chapter, we see the aftermath of the battle of Trujillo-Williams as Barbeau looks to get revenge on the “Grinder of Ganymede” and creeps through the dead decks of The Eleanor Gray.

Claire locked all the recent data down with Captain-level clearance. She waited until the curvature of Ganymede made any readings on this dead habitat become impossible, so the crew couldn’t know her secret…
On this episode of Mindframe, Claire Campana finally has her sit down with the Alpha, and it doesn’t go quite as she expects. As they travel using the brutal NDE engines, they leap across the solar system to find a hidden habitat, a message from the past, and a secret that will realign Claire’s perception about the mission and who she should even be allied with.

Admiral Oshiro was focused on Arnez. Oshiro said, “Arnez, stop what you’re doing and surrender. I don’t know how you’re doing this, nor can I fathom why, but you’re never going to get off of this station. This is not a request. You have five seconds to comply.” Oshiro was not bluffing or playing at being tough. In exactly five seconds, or now, more like four, Arnez was going to be shot dead for attempting to kidnap Marcellus Ball.
In this episode of the Mindframe Podcast, we circle back around to Sophie Arnez. She had just begun her plan to kidnap Marcellus, but she found herself locked in the Framing Chamber with no idea on how to escape. The next part of her mission kicks in with the help of some Deviant colleagues. They have to use some rather unorthodox alien tech, and it doesn’t all go as planned, but Sophie is ready to make her move.

This episode of Mindframe is another interlude that focuses on the growth and training of the real Josephine Wu. Now that she has the Psi Amp installed in her body, she, The Sender, and Master Feng have been training and exploring its possible uses. On the night where we are joining her now, we see some amazing growth in her abilities and her understanding in merging the quantum world with her own formidable will.

On this episode of Mindframe, we return to the story of Teddy, but we see a very different Theodore Brown and a very different time frame. After being let loose of Barbeau’s Mindframe in the previous chapter, Teddy is now free to remember his past, and we begin to see the path that led him from the academy back on Earth to being a Framer. We jump back almost two decades in his life to see a simpler time, but connections with Teddy and some other characters we’ve met before may just make the mystery deepen.

On this episode of Mindframe, we revisit Mariel Barbeau (previously known as Josephine). She is close to a full repair and relaunch of the Old Dame Hotel, and she’s eager for Uncle Alphie to get there. She doesn’t expect the what happens to her reality as a result–both her and her chapters will never be the same again!
What Barbeau saw was chaos, utter and complete. The ground was bleeding more ground like a fountain of earth, and the sky was filled with a landscape of fractured trees. Puffs of moving clouds had replaced snow on the churning ground, and in particularly bad spaces, the ground clouds parted and magma flowed, belching black smoke, which was the next mountain over and not smoke at all.

Penny touched Grim’s stomach, danced her fingertips to the burn scars from when the Maglici family had him in chains, hit him with electricity, and put cigars out on his flesh. She slunk behind him, her hands touching each of the other scars that blossomed on his back, from where he was whipped at that same torture session. She gently soothed the marks from his stab wounds in his side, the shot gun pellets in his leg, and even the larger scar where he was shot with a pistol while he was a wilder, younger man. She tracked a single line, a constellation of pain, injury, duty, and folly, until she was in front of him again. She lightly grabbed his fingers and walked toward the bed.
In Chapter 23 of Mindframe, we revisit Grim Boliver. He had just accidentally attended a Deviant rally with Penny, and they ran from the scene before anyone got busted by the Global Police Force. Now that they are free and finally together, they make a very interesting stop at the Plaza which leads them to even cozier environments. As Grim and Penny grow closer, the nagging specter of both the Boliver family’s nature and obligations starts to intrude in very interesting ways…

The air smelled of smoke mixed with rainy air seeping in through the back doors, but tainted by the scent of iron and spilled life. Marcellus lay still, legs tucked in a strange angle nobody could ever maintain. Blood pooled under him. It was starting to drip off the edge of the spotlight walkway like burgundy wax from a forgotten candle. Sophie couldn’t look at the wreckage of his face. His beautiful face.
In Chapter 22 of Mindframe, we start to follow Sophie Arnez as a main character with her own chapters. When we last saw Sophie (AKA Desi), she had just shot Marcellus Ball. A lot. Now, we pick up her story moments after that fatal moment. We also start to see who she really is outside of the Echo Theater that Marcellus creates as his Mindframe. Why did she shoot him? Is he really dead? What comes next for Sophie? You’ll have to listen to find out.

The gossamer death orbs bounced off the Framing Chamber and couldn’t penetrate its odd hull. One touched a marine, passing through his calf, and he instantly lit ablaze with a white phosphorescent flame. The second marine screamed something and ran to his aid, but another white ball danced through the bulkhead and into his chest, passing through as if there was no such thing as matter. He, too, screamed and burned. It was amazingly quick.
In Chapter 21, we revisit Claire Campana. She is finally at the helm of The Eleanor Gray, and she has a very busy day ahead of her as captain. First, she has a dire film to watch, then it’s off the meet the Alpha Messenger. If that weren’t enough, she has an interview with a news crew and a big speech to give. She may not feel up to it, but it’s her new life because in three short months, The Lariat is closing. Welcome to The Gray, Claire. We hope you survive the experience…

As Book II of Mindframe continues, we revisit Hilt Burhan as his investigation takes him to Commodore Nachayev, Claire Campana’s mentor, and his next lead in the investigation of Master Noah Feng. Together, they piece together many mysteries and move the investigation closer to a conclusion. This involves exploring the identity of the Deviant Messenger and talking about the second alien faction known as The Cincture. But first, they have to go through Josephine Wu, Mariel Barbeau, and Teddy Brown to get there!

Hilt’s brain registered only four details about the men that were important. First, the man to his right was holding a sophisticated military shotgun. Second, the one to his left held a highly customized sidearm. Third, the one with the shotgun was raising his shoulders. Fourth, the one with the pistol was lowering his shoulders. This meant shotgun was ready to attack, and sidearm was surprised. So, shotgun.
On this episode of Mindframe, we enter the second portion of the story, one where questions are answers, and more are posed. This is the Prelude for Book II, in which we meet a new character, Sheriff Hilt Burhan. He is one of the most powerful men in all of WorldGov, and he’s heading up an investigation into a potential missing person. This investigation takes him to combat with Deviants, inside of a naval officer’s dreams, and half way around the solar system in his Black Diamond ship. This darkness would drift over Desi lately. She was hiding something, keeping an emotion deep inside of her like she did. She paused and shifted to her back and stared up into the darkness. Marcellus laid his head against her breast, the perfect place, and heard her heart beat. It was a heavier sound than he anticipated, a wet and tedious thing.
In Chapter 20 of The Mindframe Podcast, we revisit Marcellus Ball. In his last chapter, he and Desi finally had that kiss while she was soaked from her walk in the rain. Now, we find them a couple hours later. What has transpired since then? What dark thing does Desi desperately try to communicate to Grim? What happens when his two attendants show up? Grim knew that only the individual person made an area dangerous. He also knew that he was the only person here in danger, based on his isolated location and lack of guards or surveillance. This type of mistake was how he got caught by the Maglichi’s in Italy before he was tortured.
In Chapter 19 of Mindframe, we revisit Grim. We left him after he gave the Academy Permit to Sophie Arnez’s mother in the bookstore. Shortly after, he bounded onto a train to follow Penny whom he spied leaving the Plaza. His chase for her leads him to true danger and reminds him exactly why the lethal Mò Yú was activated in the skies above LA—to defend against a secret Deviant meeting.

Josephine was Claire’s Framer. Her father’s second widow. This woman watched him die and had spent the past year and a half mourning his loss. That was more than Claire ever did for the man. She went on with training, fired a gun at the man’s funeral in salute, and eagerly got upvoted to become her father’s replacement. Jo was far more empathic than Claire was. Maybe that was what made one of them be a Framer and another be a naval officer. Different mind frames.
This episode of The Mindframe Podcast is Chapter 18, part two. In it, Claire walks through the door to the Old Dame and finally has a face to face with Josephine. Or Jo. Or Barbeau. As Claire wrestles with the demands being placed on her as the whole world watches her take on her father’s old ship, she also finds a colleague in need and tries to help her be her best self. The portal appeared, and the thing was seamless no more. There was a pop and a hiss of air exchanging, and it slid open. Inside, was…a woman in maybe her late thirties, the Framer for The Eleanor Gray.”
This episode of the Mindframe Podcast is Chapter 18, Part One. In it, we find Captain Claire Campana finally reach her destination—her new ship, The Eleanor Gray. She is ready to take control, even as the repairs are being finalized after the Battle of the Comet that took the life of her father. Once on the ship, she needs to be given command authority through a formal ceremony, and after that, she will finally get a chance to meet her ship’s Framer. Just ahead in the wide lawn between the tree line and the Old Dame was the Framing Chamber. Its pure white walls were seamless, no hint at a door. The purity of the thing made the fresh white snow seem like a muddy track on a construction site. There were eight more marines surrounding it. They weren’t marines from Desert Shield, however. They were Marines of the World Navy. Their leader saluted one of the men surrounding Teddy, and a conversation ensued.
Welcome to chapter 17 of Mindframe. Now that Mac has left, Teddy is ready to get on with his life, but Mac’s impact is larger than he’d like to imagine. What is the after effect of the mistrust that Mac sewed in Teddy about his secretary Kathy? Will Teddy leave the valley and move to the Old Dame full time to help Josephine finish construction? On chapter 16 of the Mindframe Podcast, we return to the Old Dame and see where we last left Josephine. Still reeling from seeing the “ghosts” in the stairwell, she decides to do something to try and restore her sanity. But she also receives a surprise guest, and they help each other in ways they both didn’t know they needed.

There was no body. There was no time. There was just the mind under all things.
On this Interlude of Mindframe, we visit a character who we haven’t seen much of, and we explore the world from their very unique point of view. They get called on by a friend and mentor to help teach a woman information about a strange device beamed down by the Senders. While they are at it, they get into a discussion of the two types of psychics that exist outside of the Framers and Messengers, and we get a different side of a famous family. It’s a trippy one, but worth the trip!

As Grim approached The Plaza, the sky grew alive with electricity. Arcs of silent lightning and pure blue-white energy cascaded to and from a central point in the sky above the shopping center. The Mò Yú had powered up. A Mò Yú’s energy would tear cars and homes and people in half if so directed, the lightning turning into a thousand whips that could melt glass and slice through an engine block…Seeing one powered up was rare and disturbingly beautiful.
Welcome to Chapter 15 of Mindframe. After his niece Elise manipulated Grim, he finally decided he needed to go to his brother Yale and procure an academy permit for Sophia Arnez. In so doing, Grim has to survive several things: a party in Yale’s ballroom, a squad of activated World Police, overly-eager book dealers, and his longing to speak to the art dealer named Penny. Which one will prove more dangerous? Listen and decide!
