[Oral Record of Haven Urban Legend #51: Eyes]
My mama told me this one and if you knew her you'd understand. She once lectured me about my nonsense for avoiding cracks 'cause I figured why risk breaking her back even if the other kids were lying to me?
Anyway, I remember it was getting colder out because I was wearing my ratty hoodie she kept begging me to throw out. I was riding my bike against the sun and the sun whooped my ass. No contest, I was halfway home by the time the streetlights came on.
I saw them in the bushes first. A pair of yellow eyes straight out of a cartoon, shining in the dark. Except it's not so funny when it's in real life. I rode harder and I saw four in the tree in front of me, buried deep in the shadows, yellow like someone had drawn them there.
I swear to God above, the house across the street hadn't lit up yet, guess the owners weren't home, because their whole yard was staring at me. I dropped my key and pounded on the door and my ma scooped me up in a rush, leaving my bike outside and shutting the door behind me.
I was panting and crying and asking if she saw 'em and she told me no, but held me like I might fade away at any moment. When I stopped crying I talked and she listened and she got this real serious look on her face, the kind she got when I said something so bad she couldn't ignore it.
"Adrian, you need to get home before dark." I asked why, she replied, "Because they're looking for you. They'll stop if they can't find you long enough, it's only at night that they watch." I asked what would happen if they found me and she shook her head slowly, staring directly into my eyes. "Don't let them. Promise me." I promised.
I didn't see the night time for months. I never saw them again, but even twenty years later I watch the dark, praying I'll never make eye contact.

Do you know what’s going on in this city? I can’t help feeling like everything is moving outside of my peripherals. I attempted to scry today, which you know is an art I have never had love for, but all I saw was bone and ash. What does that mean? Well, the problem, as ever it is with scrying, is that this could mean about fifty different things. The city on literal fire, the bones of my enemies, bones of my friends, truth in bones.
No matter, I simply know better than to trust the swampwater prophecies. I wanted to see if you had taken your nose out of your books and diaries long enough to take a look around and, if not, to urge you to do so.
You have more wisdom than the whole of that damn university. I don’t know why you insist on squirreling it away into books. Do you know the difference between a scientist and a wizard?
I would love for you to demonstrate it someday.

P1: Okay, let me ask you a question. Say you’re right. I’m not saying you are, but for a hypothetical, like. Say you witnessed a murder by a powerful, supernatural creature that makes us its prey. And what you want to do is snitch?
FRANK: I—
P1: Let me finish. There’s two ways about this, Frank. And if you’re right one of ‘em ends with you looking over your shoulder for however long your life might be. The other? Well. The other you keep annoying me for as long as I can stand you and maybe eventually you stop wincing whenever you see a dracula cape.

I ordered a cake for my mom, to be delivered to her place on Mothers' day, in the afternoon (she's not really a breakfast in bed person) because I couldn't be there myself and apparently the delivery person was from the store itself, not a delivery company, and they really went above and beyond. Mom didn't catch their name but if you delivered a cake, with complimentary flowers and a handwritten card in the afternoon then please know you've made us very happy. Cake was a little dry, but the service made up for it!"

See, there I was with a nice schooner, out for what I thought would be a relaxing trip. You know what it wasn't? That's right! It wasn't relaxing at all! There were FISH out there and look, I know! I know fish are "to be expected" as it says in the brochure but I'm talking chaotic fish! Evil fish! Thrashing about threateningly and LOOKING at me! And so it is that many wizards find their way to power, by spells so stale and rigid that to compare them to actual magic is to compare a painting with the piece of fruit it depicts.
One bastion of magical power I have had very little opportunity to study, however, is that which is held by the Fae. It is an old magic, the kind of raw stuff that makes textbooks tremble and remember that they have some other place to be. Near as I can tell, the limitations of Fae magic are, well, non-existent. They are bound only by the promises they make to their monarchs.
No matter how strong you are, in this humble wizard's opinion, it is imperative that you never underestimate the Fae.

It started with a banging.
BANG one two BANG three four BANG. And I remember this sense of dread in my heart, the sense that something was going terribly wrong. Oh sure, it could've been a raccoon. Should have been a raccoon, even. But when I got up to check I found this card slipped through the mail slot on my door.
No, no this doesn't feel like a prank to me. I'm calling her in. Maybe this time she can keep us safe.

This week, Orion gets a phone call, Max gets a notification, Wren gets a visit, and Aurelia takes care of her professor.

Haven is a free land for those beyond the mundane. It's a place where you can run to lose your scent amid the tantalizing food and where you can drop your worries in the bayou never to be found again. At least, that's what the city would have you believe. In truth, these promises are all ad-space.
But even a rigged game can be won. There are hundreds of these games all across the city, people with a bit of power and a lot of pride trying to get theirs and people with desperate hands trying to get by. Maybe it's time for this city to find itself a new game.
