Story 10: Frumious Bandersnatch
Sat, 28 Oct 2017 15:01:14 +0000
"The bookshop took care of itself. If once or twice in the time since i’d opened my doors I heard the noises of attempted burglary coming from below my apartment, i just sat tight and listened. There would be a thud, a flutter of pages, perhaps a muffled scream or two, and I would go back to my book. Why bother the police with some trivial tale of broken glass and a forced lock when i knew nothing had gone missing but the burglar?" A hapless woman recounts the mysterious origins of her used bookshop. Music: "Perseid 2" by My Own Cubic Stone Subscribe to The Hiccups on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher or Google Play. "And let’s try and not make a big deal about it when he comes in the room, okay? Don’t make a face. If he stabs you in the neck or hits me on the head try not to let it surprise you. We wouldn’t want our faces to stay that way and have rigor mortis set in." Story 4: One Last Look Around The House Before We Go
Tue, 22 Aug 2017 11:35:25 +0000
In this part of the house you are not supposed to sleep beneath a mirror. Or a bookshelf. Or a painting. But as she steps into the bedroom, Nora guesses her daughter gambled with her life long before the aneurysm bloomed, then burst, in her brain—a framed poster of a baby’s head, crowning from the mouth of a flowerpot, is positioned six inches above the headboard. It could have shaken loose during the night and crushed Claire’s skull. Subscribe and rate on iTunes: apple.co/2vTke5A Follow @hiccupspodcast on Twitter and Instagram Want to contribute? When her head started swelling, the veins blooming blue, the other residents knew it wouldn’t be long. That winter, Mrs. Mushnik died in her flat, 32D. Subscribe and rate on iTunes: apple.co/2vTke5A Follow @hiccupspodcast on Twitter and Instagram Want to contribute? Email: hiccupspodcast@gmail.com

The warning sign. The brain-coloured duvet cover, the one with the retro design, reminds me of the rich stews with lamb shanks I ate to build up my blood cells. For me, brown and tan and black belong to that dark death week when the chemotherapy was about vomit and phlegm and feces. During each cycle of the cell-death phase I was terribly constipated, a side effect of the anti-nauseants. Now I can’t stomach the sight of the thing—the duvet fabric—but I can’t throw it away so I decide to fashion it into a pleated skirt.
