Notes Home Front returns to a bruised, but optimistic Folkestone for its fifteenth and final season. Amongst hushed rumours of peace, our characters dream about a brighter, democratic future, whilst struggling to maintain morale after four years of a seemingly endless war which has seeped into every aspect of civilian life and drawn in everyone.

Subtitled "Onward", Season 15 of Home Front is story-led by Katie Hims, with Sarah Daniels, Shaun McKenna and Sebastian Baczkiewicz completing the writing team. Onward is the troopship which goes up in flames on the first day, momentarily stopping soldiers from departing from Folkestone to the Western Front. It is also the Allies' movement towards a retreating German front; it is the tentative hopes of progress in a post-war Britain; it is the drive for a wounded community to find some kind of peace, however fragile.

Notes

The Home Front story returns to Devon, a county central to the country's desperate hopes for a good harvest, in which the upheavals and social schisms of WW1 were felt particularly keenly. Summer 1918 marks the point when Britain was on the brink of starvation, with the most important harvest of the war looming, both literally and metaphorically. Women, children, prisoners of war and wounded soldiers are all being put to work on the land. However, there are also those unable or unwilling to help the Government drive to feed the war effort. Dartmoor prison now houses 1000 conscientious objectors, much to the fury of local people with family away fighting, whilst at nearby Seale Hayne, a radical new hospital for shell-shocked soldiers has opened. Season 14 challenges notions of a harmonious rural idyll.

Season 14 of Home Front is story-led by Sebastian Baczkiewicz, and subtitled "Needs Must When the Devil Drives".

Lucy Catherine, Katie Hims and Sarah Daniels complete the writing team for this season, which will also feature the return of Anton Lesser, Matthew Beard and Maggie Steed, and guest appearances from Geoffrey Palmer, Mark Heap, Jonathan Bailey and Damien Molony.

Notes By 1918, some of the inevitable consequences of creating a large, paid, female workforce, and relying more than ever on educated women to run organisations supporting the war, were beginning to scare the establishment horses. Women were too free, and their freedom was too dangerous. Creating an impossible ideal of womanhood, and then attacking all other women for their immorality (read freedom) was a means of control then, and hasn't entirely died out.

And hand in hand with praise for women's femininity came the other side of the coin - a celebration of purely masculine men, with an inevitable condemnation of any femininity in men.

Season Thirteen of Home Front - A Woman's Place - is set back in Folkestone, which feels overrun with women, and where anxious pillars of the establishment are flustered by the proximity of all these women to all these men.

Women themselves are emboldened politically by the recent introduction of female suffrage, and suppressed in turn by various measures - including the draconian DORA 40D amendment empowering the police to detain and examine women suspected of giving venereal disease to members of His Majesty's Forces.

The action of Season 13 revolves around three households - Meadowthorpe (a utopian female household), The Old Rectory (a brothel) and Keepers Lodge (a home for unmarried mothers) - which are popularly taken to be much of a muchness.

Season 13 is story-led by Sarah Daniels, with episodes by Sarah, Lucy Catherine and Katie Hims.

Written by Katie Hims Directed by Jessica Dromgoole Sound: Martha Littlehailes

Notes Home Front Season 11 focuses on madness and trauma, both military and civilian, and is subtitled 'Broken and Mad', a line from the Sassoon poem, Survivors

No doubt they'll soon get well; the shock and strain Have caused their stammering, disconnected talk. Of course they're 'longing to go out again,'- These boys with old, scared faces, learning to walk. They'll soon forget their haunted nights; their cowed Subjection to the ghosts of friends who died,- Their dreams that drip with murder; and they'll be proud Of glorious war that shatter'd all their pride... Men who went out to battle, grim and glad; Children, with eyes that hate you, broken and mad.

Folkestone is still recovering from the first Gotha Air Raid that struck suddenly and devastatingly on 25 May 1917, killing nearly a hundred citizens. At the heart of this narrative are three soldiers suffering war neurosis (shell shock), but the story refracts out to the madness of a town that has recently experienced significant trauma. The polarities of treatment for soldiers - from the talking cure of Dr Argent (& WH Rivers) to the 'punitive' methods of Dr Pilchard (& Lewis Yealland) - find a parallel in civilian manifestations. Post air raid anxiety, on a personal and a civic scale, can be treated by arrest and prosecution, or by accommodation and understanding.

NOTES HOME FRONT SEASON 10: OUR DAILY BREAD

Season Ten has as its theme the Church and Class. By April 1917, food shortages were becoming a focus of Great War Britain. In Berlin, the day before our season opens, there were food riots and strikes in protest against food rationing. Meanwhile in Britain, discussions were beginning about voluntary rationing for the upper classes, and the working classes struggled to afford what food there was.

Nearly three years into the war, with no prospect of peace on the horizon, and many, many families touched by loss and grief, the desire to memorialise the fallen took hold, and the debate about intercessionary prayers (i.e. for the dead) raged. Just after the season's close, the Archbishop of Canterbury controversially included an intercessionary prayer in his new prayer book.

Out of nowhere, on 25 May 1917, a fleet of Gothas attacked the South coast of Britain, specifically Folkestone, in the first ever air raid on Britain, causing the greatest number of civilian casualties of the war to date.

A special edition of Home Front: A LIGHTENING, written by Sarah Daniels and directed by Jessica Dromgoole, was broadcast as Radio 4's Afternoon Drama on 25 May 2017 to mark this anniversary.

NOTES Season 9 of Home Front (Foreign Bodies) opens shortly after the Somme, on the day a war-weary Germany made a peace offer to the Allies via neutral America - an offer treated with suspicion by Lloyd George's new Government, formed only the day before.

After two and a half years of war, and against a backdrop of the British Empire Union's "Intern Them All" rallies, anxieties about foreigners were beginning to simmer ever closer to the surface across Britain. There were real fears of a "hidden hand", networks of "Hunnish" sympathisers going up to the highest level of Government, with an agenda to destroy the country from within. Newspapers and politicians called for public lists of both naturalised and unnaturalised "aliens", whose patriotism was constantly questioned. In Tyneside, a crucible of foreign sailors, munitions factories and a tradition of dissent, paranoia about foreign bodies was most keenly felt.

Season 9 of Home Front is story-led by Sebastian Baczkiewicz (PILGRIM, MR RAINBOW) and written by Sarah Daniels (THE CAZALETS, EATING FOR ENGLAND), Katie Hims (MARTIN BECK, KING DAVID), Shaun McKenna (THE FORSYTES) and Claudine Toutoungi (SLIPPING).

NOTES This season (Season 8) of Home Front is set back in Folkestone, during the Battle of the Somme, and just after the death of Lord Kitchener in circumstances that provoked a number of conspiracy theories, and the execution of Sir Roger Casement for his role in the Easter Rising. Both the Secret Intelligence Service and the War Office had bases in the town, recruiting and organising overseas intelligence gathering. Genuine players at the time include Captain Mansfield Cumming, codename C (Brian Protheroe), and Major Cecil Cameron, codename CF (Justin Salinger).

The film, 'The Battle of the Somme' was released on 10 August, and became Britain's biggest selling film until Star Wars. Around 20 million people - almost half the population, saw the film during the summer of 1916.

NOTES This seventh season of Home Front is set in a farming community in South Devon, where Gabriel's sister Cora lives, and - coincidentally - where Adam Wilson headed at the end of Season Six, running away from his crime, and looking for Dieter. Our characters' stories take place against the backdrop of history, in this case, a notable shift in the preoccupations of the Home Front.

April 1916 marks the moment in the First World War when recruitment was no longer voluntary, and conscription into the military began to take hold. And with conscription came objection, and the war witnessed over two million tribunals looked into the merits of men appealing against the draft. Devon was one of the counties most resistant to joining up, voluntarily or not.

Season 7 of Home Front is story-led by Richard Monks (STONE, INQUEST) and written by Sebastian Baczkiewicz (PILGRIM, MR RAINBOW), Lucy Catherine (THE MASTER AND MARGARITA, RIOT GIRLS), Shaun McKenna (THE FORSYTES, THE COMPLETE SMILEY), and Sarah Daniels (THE CAZALETS, EATING FOR ENGLAND).

This is the opening episode of Season Five of Home Front. The Graham household mark the day, a year on, when they lost their only son.

Written by Sebastian Baczkiewicz Directed by Jessica Dromgoole Sound: Martha Littlehailes

NOTES Season Five of Home Front, story-led by Sarah Daniels, has at its heart a focus on Spiritualism*.

Unsurprisingly, the tide of grief and bereavement that visited Britain during the First World War brought with it a great flowering of spiritualism. Relatives wanted to be close to their loved ones in a way conventional religion was struggling to provide. For this reason many decided to extend their faith 'over the church wall', testing the waters of Spiritualism and psychical contact with the dead.

The Church was officially hostile, with the Bishop of London one of many who warned against the movement. Often the concern was less one of fraudulence - Spiritualism was compatible with Christianity - but rather that the mediums were meddling with dangerous forces and could easily be led astray. Accusations of charlatanism, pseudo-science and exploiting the bereaved were rife. It hardly helped that Spiritualism came in so many different guises. There was spiritualism as an industry, where palm-readers and mediums sold their services for profit; there was Spiritualism as a belief and philosophy; and there was the 'scientific' pursuit of psychical research, supported by leading thinkers like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle who referred to it as "a call of hope and of guidance to the human race at the time of its deepest affliction"

Home Front is a ground-breaking new Radio Four radio drama - its biggest ever at around 600 episodes - set in Britain during the Great War, playing a central role in the BBC's comprehensive offering to mark the centenaries of World War One.

An enthralling fiction, set against a backdrop of fact. Each episode is set a hundred years to the day before broadcast, and follows one character's day. Together they create a mosaic of experience from a wide cross-section of British society, and a playful treasure hunt, with at least one historical truth hidden in each story.

Season One is set in Folkestone, a fashionable Edwardian seaside resort that quickly became one of the hubs of the military machine, and close enough to France to hear the fighting. Future seasons will be set in Newcastle and Devon, telling the major stories of wartime Britain.

Marking major and minor events of the time, Home Front charts the strategies that ordinary people found for managing life in wartime, and how, together, they ensured that the Home Front didn't break down.
