Preface - The Thief's Tale -

Fri, 19 Jul 2024 17:28:06 -0400

Wade deep into the murky events that set the The Thief's Tale afloat. The kingdom of Acara has weathered its share of turbulence, and the future forecast is promising anything but sunny skies. A storm is brewing. A storm that will shake the foundations of the kingdom. Perhaps even shatter them. What is this impending tempest? Is there any hope for sunny days on the horizon? Find out in this episode: The Preface of The Thief's Tale.

This is the audio version of The Thief's Tale, the first book in the Acaran Legends series. Read to you by the author Meena Mason.

Here's a wee tidbit of the story (not found in the preface):

There were eight of them all together: some brandishing clubs, others unarmed. All of them were eyeing her as if she were the last delicious meatball that had the audacity to roll off their plate. Generally — as with most people in a situation like this — Kessa would’ve been terrified. Right now, though, she was furious; furious enough to rip apart anything antagonistic. Fury left no room for fear or even reality. Invincibility, thy name was Kessa! With a roar as forceful as any lioness, Kessa challenged her aggressors, sizing up which antelope would taste the finest.

Eight pairs of eyes widened in disbelief. Edgy shuffling accompanied looks of uncertainty. This was their ambush. They didn’t expect this tiny, lone girl to be so fearsome. Ordinarily, citizens steered clear of their territory. What did she know that they didn’t?

Turning toward the burliest man in the group, Kessa charged. Armed with a huge spiked club, he was a massive brute, easily three times her size, and yet this didn’t stop her from attacking him first. This further surprised everyone, including the brute, who, not expecting a direct attack, was slow to react. He lifted his club just as Kessa slid right through his legs. Popping up behind him, she grabbed a singularly large spike on the end of the club, which the big lug had swung over his head preparing to hammer it down on her. Kessa was lifted off the ground as he yanked with all his might, trying to throw her forward. She waited for the perfect trajectory and let go. Once free, the club flew forward at an alarming rate, smacking into his right leg, one spike shearing his pant leg and slicing the skin beneath. The brute screamed like a little girl and crooked over, grasping his now bleeding leg. Standing there like the embodiment of trouble, Kessa assessed the rest of the men and grinned cheekily. They stared at her in shock which quickly transmuted into fury. Not unlike a pack of spotted hyenas, complete with wild whoops and cackles, they charged the lioness.

Chapter 2 - The Thief's Tale

The dungeon keeper's pursuit intensifies. Will the two fugitives be ensnared in his trap or will they just managed to slip through the cracks?

Excerpt from Chapter 2:

Kessa was relieved when they’d finally found water. She was not only starving, but parched as well. Stooping to the stream’s edge, she sipped the delicious, cool water. She’d barely swallowed two mouthfuls when the hairs on the back of her neck rose and her skin prickled. The calm, peaceful atmosphere succumbed to a building ominous tension.

“Aquestria,” she whispered. “We’re being watched.”

Chapter 1 - The Thief's Tale

Sat, 03 Aug 2024 17:03:58 -0400

The so called king of Acara has visited his dungeon keeper, a legendary fighter, tracker, and executioner. Why? Does it have anything to do with two sisters on the run?

Chapter 1 excerpt:

“Seriously, Kes, we’ve no money, nothing worth selling, and few amenable connections. Translation: we have only a glimmer of hope for assistance. Our options are skin and bone.” “I’m going to be skin and bone if we don’t stop to eat soon,” Kessa complained, her thoughts quickly reverting to her hunger since that was a problem that had a quick and relatively easy solution. The tall, black-haired beauty looked skyward, a fettered smile tugging a corner of her lip. “Great Althalos, you’re relentless!” Kessa’s voice reached a high note. “It’s hunger that’s relentless!” “In your case, incessant, too.” Slipping in an apologetic grin ere withdrawing her dagger, Kessa asked, “Shall I go a-hunting?”

Chapter 3 - The Thief's Tale

Sat, 10 Aug 2024 10:03:21 -0400

By the skin of their teeth, fugitives, Kessa and Aquestria, finally reach Aquina, but some unexpected news sets them back. Or does it?

Chapter 3 Excerpt:

Dismayed to see wanted posters of themselves plastered all over the city, Aquestria tugged her hooded sister away from the food stands. “Come on; we must get to Lord Aguilon as soon as possible.” She tugged on the edge of her own hood. “Even with these, we still risk being recognized.”

Plowing their way through the throngs of people, they steered toward the castle sitting visibly upon a hilltop. Massive, stone battlements, tall towers, spiral staircases, spacious rooms, and spectacular views were just a few of this building’s virtues. Secret tunnels, a dungeon labyrinth, a remarkable hedge garden maze (the Aguilons’ loved puzzles), and a deep, encompassing moat were features that really made the place unique.

From a distance, one would assume the family that called the castle home had been particularly fortunate and immune to calamity. But upon closer scrutiny, it was evident this wasn’t the case. The drawbridge sagged precariously to one side, and chips of mortar littered the weeds at the base of the wall. The portcullis was inoperable and was hinged at an awkward angle, barely high enough to admit a rider on horseback. No one was in sight, and the inner gate was shut tight. Misfortune had befallen the once immaculately kept castle - or more accurately, Casyius had befallen the place.

Chapter 4 - The Thief's Tale

Wed, 14 Aug 2024 13:12:18 -0400

Temporary respite, indeed! Narrowly dodging the grip of the noose, Kessa finds her hands tied when her motives are uncomfortably probed and savagely scrutinized.

Chapter 4 Excerpt:

Water dripping from her blonde hair, Kessa trailed behind sulkily, kicking at stones, muttering, and lamenting the long walk back to the castle. It certainly hadn’t felt this far when they were travelling in the opposite direction. Then again, it hadn’t been pouring rain or as cold, either.

Glimpsing at her sibling, Aquestria declared, “Malieous is not going to care if you’re having a bad day. Make those twenty-year-old legs move!”

Chapter 5 - The Thief's Tale

Tue, 03 Sep 2024 14:51:50 -0400

Who struck Kessa Decora over the head? When consciousness finally returns, what new predicament will the fugitive find herself in this time? And will it widen the rift forming between her and Aquestria?

Audio version of, The Thief's Tale, written and read by Meena Mason. Copyright © Meena Mason

Chapter 5 Excerpt:

The merry chirping of birds, usually a cheerful sound to regain consciousness to, ravaged Kessa’s ears and split her aching head into fragments. Her eyes became painfully aware of sunlight beyond their lids. Vocally, Kessa wished for someone to hit her over the head again just to stop the pain.

“Yeah, sorry about that. I had a sneaking suspicion you might try to run off and asked Rake to prevent that from happening. I didn’t realize he’d take me so literally.”

Immediate recognition of the voice relaxed Kessa’s fears but did nothing to ease her discomfort (to the contrary, knowing who was in the room with her only increased it). If Kessa could’ve rolled her eyes she would’ve, but instead she had to content herself with merely squinting at her captor.

“Your Rake is aptly named,” she grated.

He smiled impishly. “Good to see your sense of humour hasn’t been affected by your headache.”

“I’m surprised it wasn’t knocked out of me.”

Chapter 6 - The Thief's Tale

Fri, 11 Oct 2024 14:12:07 -0400

Kessa Decora is no stranger to letting her feelings show; unless those feelings happened to be her deepest and most secret. Feelings so secret even she is unaware she has them. Feelings that could toss her into a moat of insecurity, swirl her in a whirlpool of doubt, and leave her for the pragmatism piranhas to devour. The stars have aligned subjugating Kessa to one of her toughest challenges yet – coming to terms with her feelings. And, great Athalos, founder of Acara, even sharing them!

Chapter 6 Excerpt:

Dripping with sweat, face beet-red, breathing rapid, Kessa, hands on her hips, walked around the moat resisting the temptation to jump in. The lengthy run had helped calm her nerves, but physically, she felt hot, sticky, and she smelt like her sweat had been competing for a best stench award. Glancing at the moat again, she rationalized that a quick dip wouldn’t do her any harm. True, she didn’t know what, if anything, lurked beneath the surface, or how deep the water was, but if she was quick nothing would notice. Done with hesitation, she jumped in, clothes and all.

Chapter 7 - The Thief's Tale

Sat, 02 Nov 2024 19:50:22 -0400

The cat is out of the bag. The love birds united at last, but, alas, revealing your affection for the love of your life does not supplant the warrant for your arrest nor will it prevent a determined dungeon keeper from stretching your neck at the end of a well-tied noose. Only preparation, craftiness and a lot of luck will do that. While Kessa heals from a disastrous fish bite... ahem... monster bite, Aquestria, Rake, and Pantheus formulate their escape. Will they manage it or will Malieous Fayne, the formidable dungeon keeper of Cyrene, thwart their best laid plans?

Audio version of, The Thief's Tale, written and read by Meena Mason. Copyright © Meena Mason

Chapter 7 Excerpt:

Pantheus felt like he was among a throng of nervous sheep, and on more than one occasion, had to grab Aquestria’s hand to keep from being parted.

“This is madness!” he hollered, his voice almost obliterated by the wind.

Casually surveying the area, as was her habit, Aquestria smirked, acknowledging that Pantheus obviously didn’t shop very often. True, the imminent storm had riled the crowd more than usual, but this frenzy wasn’t all that different from the average market day.

“This way!” she called, seizing his cloak in case he didn’t hear and yanking him toward a leather working stall. “Four water flasks, please.”

After bargaining, Aquestria placed two silver coins on the counter and said thank you as the merchant produced their purchase. Handing the flasks to Pantheus, she watched thoughtfully while he put them in his pack.

“What else do we need?”

Suddenly, she stepped back, abruptly slamming her arm into Pantheus’ chest forcing him backward. A wooden arrow pierced the beam of the market stall where he’d been standing, its shaft still quivering from the intensity of the impact. Aquestria was gone before the shaft was motionless, intent on pursuing the shooter. Diving for cover, Pantheus scanned the vicinity for signs of suspicious activity.

Apparently, the leather worker was the only other person to have noticed the arrow because he was cowering behind his stall.

“He’s come for me!” he cried, peering over top his stall and ducking just as another arrow thumped into the counter directly above where his head had been.

“Who?” Pantheus asked, clambering closer to the merchant.

Swallowing hard, the merchant clasped his hands together. His eyes directed to where the arrow had come from, his lips moved in a plea for whoever was after him to spare him.

Pantheus seized his arm impatiently. “Who is after you, man?”

Before the man could answer, Pantheus saw the crowd systematically clear a large circle around two people. Aquestria, holding a discharged crossbow, stood over a man lying face down in the dirt. Seconds later, the man rolled away from her and got to his feet.

“Kale,” the merchant announced shakily.

Thunder clapped accentuating the merchant’s dread. Hesitantly, he left his hiding place, his eyes darting around warily.

“It must be Kale. He’s Dredan’s most feared collector. He rips people apart. I owe Dredan money. I missed two payments, and Dredan said if it happened again, he’d send Kale. I should’ve paid him yesterday, but I didn’t have the money. I was hoping to make enough today; I didn’t think he’d send Kale so quickly. Help your lady, if you can, friend. I’m sure glad you paid up front.”

Chapter 8 of The Thief's Tale

Thu, 12 Dec 2024 14:54:55 -0500

Snagged by the ever competent dungeon keeper and thrown in Acara's jail, Kessa awaits her pending execution.

Chapter 8 Excerpt:

She’d awoken in what she could only assume was Aquina’s prison, without a clue how she’d gotten there. Her cell was the last one in a string of stone cubicles, fronted by impenetrable, cylindrical, iron bars. Filthy, soggy straw was piled against the back wall in the form of a bed, adding its own distinct stench to the foul smell of the place. A grimy bucket was filled with a liquid that only faintly resembled water, and pieces of the previous occupant’s discarded, rock-hard bread were scattered around the floor for the rats to nibble. Horrible coughing, sneezing, and teeth chattering echoed throughout the prison — courtesy of the icy temperatures and lack of blankets. Tiny holes in the walls, serving as windows, provided inadequate light to do anything other than shiver in the cold. The prison was dark, damp, dirty, utterly miserable, and with the anchored chain securing her ankle, completely inescapable.

Chapter 9 The Thief's Tale

Fri, 17 Jan 2025 19:44:29 -0500

The rooster has crowed, ushering in Kessa Decora's final dawn. The dawn that will see her slippery, little neck either stretch or snap... if King Casyius has his way. Although Kessa usually has a knack for foiling the best laid plans, she's in over her head this time.

Chapter 9 excerpt (spoliers ahead):

Rampant, bright orange and yellow flames were engulfing the curtains as people struggled to escape unmarred. Within seconds the entire scene went from quiet observation to complete chaos. Onlookers darted about, some trying to help, some trying to get away, and some trying to encourage the pandemonium.

Scootching her legs through her arms, Kessa brought her wrists, still manacled, to the front of her and snatched the bag from her head. Next, she tore the noose off and stood up, looking around anxiously. The guards surrounding the gallows were preoccupied with the rioting crowd, and she realized it would be easy to slip into the commotion and disappear. Her only concern was the dungeon keeper. She couldn’t see him, and one wrong move could ruin her chance of escape.

Chapter 10 - The Thief's Tale

Sat, 15 Mar 2025 09:27:14 -0400

A band of skilled allies, just what the girls needed. Red Talon, the only rebels that have managed to thwart and frustrate King Casyius are on their side, though the whys and hows of this unexpected, albeit welcome, alliance are as murky as a swamp at midnight. Regardless, the flood of worry and trepidation stemming from being hunted by the dungeon keeper for so long has been temporarily quelled. The group has a much needed respite, while they attempt to figure out what is going on and what, exactly, to do next.

Excerpt of Chapter 10:

“Great Ash, Kessa! What did he do to you?” Aquestria asked with severity, recognizing the startling alteration in her sister’s view and description of Malieous. Usually, when Kessa referred to Malieous, it was with intolerance or sarcasm. She’d never spoken about him with such pronounced trepidation. The many cuts and bruises covering her sister were now more apparent, and Aquestria felt a molten anger bubbling within.

Understanding the motivation behind her sister’s sudden wrath, Kessa shook her head, exclaiming, “No. No. No. He didn’t do any of this; his methods are much more cunning and disturbing than physical assault. I don’t know how to explain it; I’ve never seen him as a true enemy before. I mean, we’ve always been at odds, but… this was different. Yesterday, I saw a side of him…” she trembled, and her voice dropped off. Swallowing, she continued firmly, “Trust me; you don’t want to be on his target list. And we are!”

Chapter 11 - The Thief's Tale

Fri, 21 Mar 2025 11:40:00 -0400

Bright eyes, a brilliant smile, and lovely lashes will not deter nor distract the dungeon keeper from a task. As Odette, a maid in Aquina’s castle, is about to find out. He doesn’t inspire fear in the hearts of adversaries for nothing. Nor was his formidable reputation earned by party tricks. If Malieous Fayne, the infamous dungeon keeper of Acara, wants you to divulge something – there’s no question you’re going to spill the beans. Whether or not you’ll leave the experience unmarred is what’s questionable.

Chapter 11 Excerpt:

Glaring up at him, Odette hissed, “I won’t answer any more of your questions. You can torture me as much as you like.”

A bright flash of lightning lit up the tool in his hand. Slowly, a malignant smile crept across his face. “Oh, Odette, my dear girl, how could I refuse such a generous offer?”

Chapter 12 - The Thief's Tale by Meena Mason

Mon, 07 Apr 2025 15:38:51 -0400

After their wearying ventures, and, in Kessa's case, a close call with the noose, Kessa and Aquestria are not only in need of some respite, but also some trustworthy allies, some good advice, and somewhere to lay low. Nestled within Red Talon's base with Artex, Rake, and Pantheus, they seem to have found that. Unfortunately, it will not last. Not with the dungeon keeper on their tails. And, although, Aquestria has settled confidently, Kessa knows she faces yet another difficulty; her companions will start sniffing around for answers before long. Why does this trouble her? Why can't she tell them about the king's reasons for wanting her dead? Something elusive lurks beneath Kessa's casual facade; something unnerving compels her secrecy - a circumstance that only Kessa and her past can reveal.

Chapter 12 Exerpt:

“What’s going on?” Kessa asked guardedly – already guessing what was going on. They were going to ask her the question she could not answer. They were going to ask her why Casyius really wanted her dead.

A vivid flashback careened through her mind, reeling her back to that fateful day when the events that would inevitably lead her here started.

Chapter 13 - The Thief's Tale by Meena Mason

Fri, 02 May 2025 12:20:16 -0400

Settling into Cyrenean life isn't proving as seamless for Kessa Decora as it would for the average individual. A monotonous, daily routine never stood much of a chance against the restless, emotional, headstrong teenager, and hence, she's already found herself in a heap of trouble.

Audio version of, The Thief's Tale, written and read by Meena Mason. Copyright © Meena Mason

Chapter 13 Excerpt:

There were eight of them all together: some brandishing clubs, others unarmed. All of them were eyeing her as if she were the last delicious meatball that had the audacity to roll off their plate. Generally — as with most people in a situation like this — Kessa would’ve been terrified. Right now, though, she was furious; furious enough to rip apart anything antagonistic. Fury left no room for fear or even reality. Invincibility, thy name was Kessa! With a roar as forceful as any lioness, Kessa challenged her aggressors, sizing up which antelope would taste the finest.

Chapter 14 - The Thief's Tale

Sat, 14 Jun 2025 09:33:54 -0400

What in the three kingdoms of Nogard has Kessa gotten herself into this time? Has she found a purpose? Has she merely tumbled into something to keep her busy or was it mere tumbling at all? Whatever the case, Kessa has found herself with a choice: keep trudging along day by day at the Cyrenean stables, or take a chance on a new venture. A venture that just might cost her her life, or, perhaps save it.

Chapter 14 Excerpt:

It was dark out, hinting at the extent she’d been there – a while. Was Quinn concerned about her? Would her sister be notified of her absence? If she was, would she be worried about her?

Finally, the man she presumed was the leader, T, flashed a cheeky grin her way, whispered something to his confederates, and said, “Miss Recruit, we are willing to train you, but naturally, we’ve conditions… and rules.”

“Naturally.”

Chapter 15 - The Thief's Tale

Fri, 27 Jun 2025 19:07:17 -0400

Kessa finds herself in a situation she’s not entirely sure her training with Clandestine Services prepared her for. Will she hold true to her oath? Will pain and coercion defeat her?

Audio version of, The Thief's Tale, written and read by Meena Mason. Copyright © Meena Mason

Chapter 15 Excerpt:

The door hinges squeaked loudly as someone entered the room. Instantly, the tantalizing aroma of fresh bread wafted past her nose. Her stomach was so empty it didn’t seem to have the energy to protest anymore, or perhaps she just couldn’t hear it. Kessa had never been this hungry; it was a torture far more effective than the way she was tied up. She wanted to cry, beg, plead for food, but she knew she could not. If they cracked her, Aquestria, Pantheus, and perhaps even Quinn, would be killed. On the less tragic side, Thomas would be terribly disappointed in her if he found out. He might even be severely punished for commending her. Besides, she’d never been one to break an oath, and she didn’t intend to start now.

Chapter 16 - The Thief's Tale

Thu, 17 Jul 2025 14:23:50 -0400

On her first mission major mission for Clandestine Services, Kessa certainly makes some waves.

Chapter 16 Excerpt:

She was enjoying both a breath-taking view out on glossy, moon-lit waters that spanned as far as the eye could see and an intriguing chess match when something enormous in the water caught her eye. It swam under the ship; there was a loud bang and the boat tipped alarmingly.

“Wrestrook!” the ship’s lookout screamed.

Kessa heard the fear in his voice. Gripping the railing tightly to avoid being tossed into the wrests, she ducked low.

The chess pieces scattered. Captain Covaso and Tragor leapt from their seats and rushed to the deck. The crew sounded terrified as the creature played with the boat like a toy. Kessa held onto that railing for dear life as they tipped and pitched. It wasn’t long until she comprehended the crew’s dread. A creature the size of the boat swam a couple metres out portside and raised a portion of its body above the waves, though the moonlight did a good job of amplifying the terror beneath the waves. Part crocodile, part squid, and part… penguin the creature boasted impenetrable opalescent scales and a belly of coal-black plating. Two parallel rows of ivory horns rippled down its armoured back and massive crocodile tail. It had two humongous flippers on either side beneath which were numerous tentacles that Kessa kept losing count of. Its penguin shaped head almost leant it an adorable aspect if it weren’t for the beak-snout lined with razor sharp, blue teeth the size of her entire body, and two huge, black orblike eyes that glinted with a yellow sheen when they caught the moonlight.

“We’re done for!” Kessa breathed, too frightened to speak above a whisper.

With a deafening cackle that incapacitated every person on the ship, the wrestrook spun several lower tentacles like propellers at incredible speed and launched itself over the whole ship. If it belly-flopped it would rent them in two or crush them completely, but that wasn’t the plan. It dived to starboard. Kessa swore the resulting wave would capsize the ship. It came close.

Chapter 17 Excerpt:

“Wait here,” Taur quietly commanded.

Placing his box carefully down beside the gangplank, he crept onboard. Spotting, Grain asleep on the crates, he waved to his associates to follow. He retrieved his box and carried it gingerly up the gangplank. Myna, her dark hair tied tightly back in a bun, appeared at the base of the gangplank. Kessa frowned. She’d developed a keen respect for the dark-eyed beauty. She’d be disappointed if she was involved in the scheme.

Sneaking up the gangplank, Myna withdrew a sword from the scabbard attached to her belt.

“Taur,” she cried. “You scallywag! I knew you were up to no good.”

Contempt screwing up his already unattractive features, Taur motioned for the other four to surround her.

“Shouldn’t have followed me, Myna,” he said, withdrawing his own sword. “Leastways, not alone.”

“House shopping, Thomas?” Kessa asked. “If so, I entirely approve. Wouldn’t mind purchasing the property myself if I had the means.”

“What? Tired of the stables?”

Her need you ask expression was reply enough.

He chuckled. “This property would certainly suit you, kid, your sister, too. It is a fine piece of real estate if you don’t mind living in a home once occupied by a greedy, merciless, deceitful moneylender.”

“Oh! Is this my next assignment?”

“Was it the greedy, merciless, deceitful description that gave it away?”

“Moneylenders, in general, have it coming.”

“It’s easy to condemn the nasty ones; they’re in line for a hefty helping of comeuppance. It’s when we’re required to destroy the lives of the innocent or undeserving that this job stinks.”

Chapter 19 - The Thief's Tale

Sat, 23 Aug 2025 09:30:00 -0400

Another challenging task under her belt, Kessa sits back to enjoy the spoils of her hard work. Believing her cleverness and generosity will provide a window through which she can crawl to improve her relationship with Aquestria, she finds reality is much crueler. Rumours, like leaves caught in a whirlpool, have been circulating, dampening the sisters' rapport. What happens when one of the rumours happens to be true?

Chapter 19 Excerpt:

The sixteen-year-old blonde spy hummed to herself as she approached the city’s collection house. It was a medium-sized structure, constructed mostly of wattle and daub with embellishments of wood and stone. Several windows with decorative shutters lent the building an open air, though, upon close inspection, the thick, closed curtains on the inside detracted from this as did the gated door. Despite the quaint appearance, the building exuded a general impression of snobbery, avarice, and intolerance; perhaps its reputation was tainted by the attitudes of the tax clerks and collectors who worked there.

A shiver of discomfort running down her spine, Kessa entered and pulled the door closed behind her. She beheld six pairs of eyes settling on her like she was an ugly duckling.

Sliding his garish reading glasses down his nose, one of the tax clerks drawled, “How may I… help you?”

Chapter 20 - The Thief's Tale

Thu, 28 Aug 2025 10:01:26 -0400

*Spoilers Ahead*

Kessa struggles with the bombshell that her sister and Lord Fayne are dating. If she thought that news was devastating; the announcement of their engagement is nigh cataclysmic. Impetuously, Kessa craves a near death experience to help her cope. What she gets is a meeting with the king. What’s the difference, really?

Excerpt:

Rationalizing that Thomas had told her to downplay her aptitudes and skills around people she knew; Kessa discarded her emotional safeguards and exploded in a volatile tirade of complaints, accusations, and criticisms.

Sinking resignedly back into her chair, Aquestria tapped her fingernails on her mug, waiting for the finale which came abruptly when Kessa spun to see Malieous standing stolidly in the doorway, arms folded, near-black eyes penetrating. His presence cooled Kessa’s simmering like a block of ice.

Peering around Kessa, he commented, “I take it you’ve told her our news.”

Sidestepping the youngest Decora, Malieous went over to his fiancée, bent down, and gently kissed her just long enough to make Kessa huff and look away with revulsion. He whispered something in Aquestria’s ear that made her laugh like a tinkling of tiny bells. Kessa had never heard her laugh like that before. The ache returning tenfold, Kessa craved an exit, an escape… to anywhere.

Just as she turned to leave, Malieous cautioned matter-of-factly, “Miss Decora, trust me when I say, your affiliation with me will go much smoother if I never hear you speak to your sister that way again!”

“No affiliation at all will run the smoothest!” Kessa retorted, folding her arms defiantly.

Malieous’ eyebrow rose, the faint traces of a grin playing on his lips. “I’ll do my best.”

Chapter 21 - The Thief's Tale

Sat, 30 Aug 2025 11:29:00 -0400

If Anandrill Forest had wedding bells, they’d be peeling madly, and Kessa would be resentfully plugging her ears. Yes, the day she’s dreaded more than an empty stomach has finally arrived. Aquestria is about to become Lady Fayne, married to the infamous dungeon keeper, and Kessa’s bane. But, even on a unique day such as this, Kessa isn’t completely free of her devotion to Clandestine Services. Crime never pays, and it never stops. In the case of the latter, neither does Kessa.

Excerpt:

“Kessa Decora, your unique thread is vital to the fabric being patterned. Worry not, if another sits at the loom for a while - oft times our most creative tapestries are not woven by a single hand.”

Chapter 22 - The Thief's Tale

Fri, 05 Sep 2025 13:20:53 -0400

Ah, to be rivetted by the courageous deeds of Aquina’s Lord Aguilon whilst feasting at his dinner table. A capable storyteller, a handsome lord, adventures fraught with cunning and danger, delicious food: what more could company ask for? What more could Kessa ask for? Apparently, a good deal more.

Excerpt:

“Please, join us, Captain.” Pantheus pulled out a chair and called for the servant to bring an extra plate of food.

“Thank you. I am feeling a wee bit peckish.”

“You might want to tell Ri your news.” He winked adorably at her as he employed Carson’s nickname.

“Oh, I will, my lord, after I’ve regaled the group with the details of your most impressive triumph over crime.” He grinned at Aquestria, and his vibrant green-eyes twinkled. “Steering the conversation away from his good deeds is Lord Aguilon’s specialty, but I will not be deterred.”

                “Carson-”

“Oh, come now, Pantheus; indulge us. I swear the story will go no further than this room,” Aquestria assured him.

Carson, noticing Pantheus’ defeated but acquiescent nod, delved into the story with as much enthusiasm as a fisherman casting his line for the first time.

Chapter 23 - The Thief's Tale

Mon, 08 Sep 2025 15:43:24 -0400

Wounded by Lord Aguilon’s perceived snub, Kessa decrees that what is good for the goose is good for the gander, and, in lieu of a bandage, pursues distractions powerful enough to keep her mind off him. Served up on a platter, in the form of a caged wagon, Augustus, the handsome rapscallion who nearly succeeded in robbing the town mint from under Pantheus’ nose, fits the bill. Talented, charming, and devious, he makes for a tantalizing diversion to be sure. But if she isn’t careful, he might end up giving Kessa a bit more than she bargained for.

Excerpt:

Augustus scooched against the back bars of his prison and ogled her cheekily. Try as she might to avert her glance, something about the criminal kept her baby blues returning to him. It wasn’t his rugged good looks complete with intelligent, brown eyes, straggly, auburn hair and matching goatee. Nor was it the fact that he was leanly muscled and garbed in a ripped tunic and pants that showcased this. Certainly, Kessa noticed these characteristics, but it was likely the roguish quality to his aura that drew her in the most. She’d always had a soft spot for deviants.

Chapter 24 - The Thief's Tale

Thu, 11 Sep 2025 09:54:00 -0400

It’s a nice night for a daring rescue, at least, according to Augustus’ devout fan base. Flip the coin to the escort, and it’s a nice night to thwart a daring rescue. Which shall prevail? And is it really a win?

Excerpt:

The volleys of fire arrows had ceased, and for several seconds, their flames flickering and Kessa sneaking about were the only things moving. Not for long. Several figures, darkly dressed and hooded, began funneling out of the trees surrounding the site. Loaded crossbows in their grasp, they trapsed cautiously toward the wagon, pausing uncertainly upon seeing Kessa leaning against it, her arms folded casually.

Chapter 25 - The Thief's Tale

Sat, 13 Sep 2025 13:02:48 -0400

Amberle Lestroy is in Cyrene’s dungeon, but King Casyius is not concerned with rewarding or even acknowledging Kessa. Not only that, he already has her next assignment lined up. Kessa, already feeling grimy from the king’s last request, now balks at his desire to literally toss her into the mire. She’ll have to wrestle her way out.

Excerpt:

Donning their hoods, they marched straight to the throne room where they found Casyius slouched in the throne, one leg casually draped over the arm and swinging with an air of impatience. They removed their hoods and bowed their heads.

“Kitten!” he exclaimed, jumping to his feet. “You’re here… finally!”

“Forgive me for keeping you waiting, your highness,” Kessa curtsied.

In hindsight, she probably should have skipped bathing. The thought of an audience with the king saturated in sweat hadn’t appealed to her, though. She doubted it would’ve appealed to him either. Stinky or late - she couldn’t win – a fact most people had come to terms with when it came to Casyius.

His high-pitched chortle was unsettling. “I won’t.” He replied to her plea for forgiveness in his silkiest voice while combing a hand through his equally silky hair. “But punitive measures later. How are you at mud wrestling?”

Chapter 26 - The Thief's Tale

Tue, 16 Sep 2025 10:29:21 -0400

Actually, excited about preparing for her next assignment, Kessa is ready for training. But when a wrench or two is thrown into the mix, she finds herself unbalanced and decides to rush headlong down a path she will come to regret.

Excerpt:

Dr. Charlo Finesse opened her office door to see Kessa standing there ready for training.

After she’d exchanged salutations with her trainee, Charlo fished, “I see an unfamiliar fire behind your eyes today.”

That morning replaying speedily through her mind, Kessa shrugged. She felt irritable, regretful, enthusiastic, and hopeful all at the same time – a difficult mix to process. Nothing she wanted to share with her trainer, however.

Apparently, she didn’t need to, Charlo was perceptive and wise enough to deduce as much on her own. “Channel all that into the pit. It’s a great place to blow off steam…

Chapter 27 - The Thief's Tale

Thu, 18 Sep 2025 09:41:43 -0400

Once again, displaying that her emotions often get the better of her, Kessa strides impetuously into a bad decision. Having snuck into Cyrene’s infamous dungeons, she’s chosen to go head-to-head with the dungeon keeper. Should she be at all surprised when he makes the best of the situation – at her expense?

Excerpt:

Kessa had snuck through the various levels of Acara’s infamous prison undetected, until she’d finally located the dungeon keepers’ office. Concealed in a dark, dank fold of rock, just outside the office door, she’d stopped, the conundrum of what exactly she’d planned to do once there hitting her like a ton of bricks.

Chapter 28 - The Thief's Tale

Wed, 24 Sep 2025 19:40:39 -0400

Consequences are Kessa’s least favourite force of nature. You reap what you sow is an expression that only tickles her fancy when it’s a good harvest. Certainly, not alone there; she is alone in sneaking into Cyrene’s dungeon and living to tell the tale, though telling the tale was never on her to do list, and for good reason. Although mum was the word, Clandestine Services caught wind of it (duh), and she must bide her time while they decide just what those consequences will be.

Excerpt:

The grin wiped clean off her face, Kessa looked at the ground wishing it would open up and swallow her whole. Had she really realized the gravity of what she’d done? Not one bit!

Chapter 29 - The Thief's Tale

Wed, 15 Oct 2025 14:39:36 -0400

Mud Mania has begun. Kessa’s mud wrestling skills will not be the solitary skills put to the test, particularly when an unexpected spectator shows up on the royal dais. Triumph in the mucky ring is a possible tick on Kessa’s ever growing to do list.

Excerpt:

Pantheus’ blue eyes met Kessa’s, and suddenly her heart was pounding, and her knees felt weak.

“Good luck out there,” he said.

Charlo, perceiving Kessa’s temporary paralysis – an odd response to Lord Aguilon’s felicitations – thanked Pantheus, hooked Kessa’s arm, and whisked her over to the competitor’s benches where they sat down.

“Are you sure everything’s okay?” she asked earnestly. “You don’t seem your usual self.”

Her cheeks flushing as pink as her companion’s hair, Kessa replied faintly, “You have no idea.”

Chapter 30 - The Thief's Tale

Fri, 24 Oct 2025 13:01:21 -0400

Particularly good spies discover the most secretive of plots and schemes, which Kessa (a particularly good spy) has done. Discovery is only a slice of a spy’s assignment pie, however. Now, Kessa gets to prove just how good a spy she is by how she twists this particular plot to her advantage.

Excerpt:

Kessa dodged the tiny throwing stars flying in her direction. She avoided the one aimed at her head and felt a sharp jab in her side. Glancing down, she saw the shiny star, its points imbedded in her skin. Ripping it free, she tossed it back at the figure leaping toward her.

Chapter 31 - The Thief's Tale

Tue, 28 Oct 2025 12:01:14 -0400

An invitation to dinner is usually a welcome delight for Kessa. Food is, after all, her best and favourite ally. Hayland Green’s dinner invitation, however, borders a precarious pitfall. Should she fail to keep her identity secret, it could spell disaster. But if one thing is for certain, fully occupied dinner tables are as loaded with secrets as they are with food and conversation. All Kessa has to do is steer the secret unravelling conversation away from her. Easy for a clever spy, right?

Excerpt:

In that instant, Hayland, Pantheus, and the servants morphed into a pack of ravenous wolves – in her mind. Her hand jerked toward where her dagger normally was as she envisioned fighting off the furry beasts just for a swig, and, boy, would she savour it. But she was not in the forest nor was she facing down any vicious animals. She was sitting at a civilized dining table pretending to be someone she wasn’t. All for the sake of keeping her identity secret and Pantheus safe; there wasn’t much she wouldn’t do to keep him safe.

Chapter 32 - The Thief's Tale

Tue, 04 Nov 2025 10:33:10 -0500

Mud Mania is drawing to a close. But before the conclusion of an exciting and action-packed tournament, Kessa has a difficult decision to make. Will she satisfy the king or follow her heart and her integrity?

Excerpt:

The final day of competition arrived much too quickly, in Kessa’s opinion. The remaining six wrestlers and their standings were: Candy Cane, Violet Crush, Torrent, Blue Dawn, Pine Cone, and Clare. In Mud Mania’s history only three other competitors had held the title of undefeated. Kessa was proud of her first place standing and her undefeated status. Violet Crush, Torrent, and Pine Cone were the only competitors that had come close to beating her.

That morning while travelling to the competition, Charlo had warned that there was plenty a slip twixt a cup and a lip. Kessa had, with a wink, thanked her for voicing her confidence in Candy Cane.

Chapter 33 - The Thief's Tale

Wed, 07 Jan 2026 19:00:39 -0500

Excerpt:

The king stood up, waiting for the crowd to quiet prior to pompously traipsing down to the podiums. The mayor of Fervour and one of his councilmen, draped in colourful regalia that reminded Kessa of peacocks, trailed the king, ceremoniously carrying the silken cushions that pillowed the medals and the crown.

Excerpt:

“Did you take any strange substances at the party?” Charlo questioned. “You watched your plate and goblet closely, right?”

Incredulous, Kessa blurted, “Yes! Routine, doctor.”

“You didn’t bump your head while swimming or anything, did you?”

“No!”

“Hmm.”

“Come on, Charlo. Spill the beans. Your secret’s safe with me.”

Her face scrunched up in confusion, Charlo said, “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Excerpt:

“Kessa?”

She blinked open her eyes and looked up into Aquestria’s concerned face.

“Are you all right?” Aquestria asked.

Sitting up, Kessa glanced around. Realizing she was in the middle of the road where she’d first seen the dog, only there was no dog now, she shook her head - mystified.

Helping her up, Aquestria pressed, “Why were you lying in the middle of the road?”

With a fierce snarl, Kessa lunged forward, her chair scraping against the floor with the effort.

Chapter 37 - The Thief's Tale

Mon, 09 Feb 2026 14:25:00 -0500

A sound beating – probably an understatement! At least, Kessa is no longer in the dark about Casyius’ punishment. Battered and bloody, she makes her way to the doctor’s office (Thomas in tow) to not only seek healing but also to discover Charlo’s true fate.

Excerpt:

Loman almost bumped into a blue haired girl as he rounded the corner. Thomas recognized Torrent, the girl Kessa had defeated to win Mud Mania. A malevolent smile was plastered on her fierce face, and her knuckles were swollen and bloody. There was some blood splattered on her tunic, too, and, as was the case with the blood on her hands, it wasn’t hers. Thomas made eye contact with her as she passed; it wasn’t something he’d want to repeat.
