Synopsis:
A dark fantasy thriller audio drama.
When we die, the remnants of us return to the First and Last Place...
Remnants is a dark fantasy thriller audio drama following the Apprentice as he learns how to read remnants under the frustrating supervision of Sir. Remnants are seemingly innocuous objects – a broken pocket watch; a steel thimble; a silk scarf – but when the Apprentice looks closely, he sees how each one holds the remnants of someone’s life story.
Each week the Apprentice reads a new remnant, following that person’s journery beginning to end. When he’s done, he must make a judgement; shelve or discard. But he doesn’t know what the criteria is or what the consequences of such a judgement might be.
The more remnants the Apprentice reads, the more we begin to understand the magnitude of the task he has been set. And the more both we, and the Apprentice himself, wonder why it is him who has been chosen to do it.
With every week, a new mystery. With every new mystery, a terrible choice.

A note: this episode mentions the development of the polio vaccine. This vaccine's development is wacky and absolutely wild in its own right, and many of the methods used, particularly early in the process, were completely bonkers and would not hold up to modern scrutiny; indeed many were criticised even at the time. The point is to highlight a case where people were not non-consensually used to innovate medically, NOT to highlight an example of a perfect developmental process. If I can find an excuse to talk about the development of the polio vaccine in more depth at some point, I absolutely will because it is completely wild.

Introducing Remnants: An Audio Drama

Hello, I’m Eira, creator of Spirit Box Radio, Not Quite Dead and Clockwork Bird. This July I’m releasing a brand new show, Remnants, a gothic fantasy thriller. The show follows the new Apprentice at the First and Last Place as he sorts through objects who hold the remnants of their previous owners within them. His job is to decide which of them is re-shelved, and which is discarded, but he has no criteria to work with and no idea what the consequences of his decisions will be. As the story goes on, the Apprentice begins to wonder why he, of everyone, was chosen for this task, and whether his near-omniscient boss, known only as ‘sir’, has chosen now to train an assistant.
Remnants has a new story to muse over every week, and a mystery at its core which will have you pinning red string to cork boards as you try to solve it. Think The Talented Mr Ripley meets The Good Place and The Sandman.
Remnants, an audio drama will start airing wherever you listen to podcasts from 15th July 2024.
