Summary:
The year is 1874, and no children walk the cobbled streets of Murkwood, Texas. For going on two decades, they had been hunted and stolen into the night. Leaving behind nothing more than the sacrificial remains of their parents. The Sacrifice Three. The blood of the Mother, the blood of the Father, and the Child. That is what was needed for them to become something cursed…a Whisper, lost on the wind. And with each loss, the town of Murkwood came closer and closer to the darkness hidden below. The lifeblood slowly draining from the town. Another sacrifice given to the unholy thing that is the Reverent Sun.
The Clan(made up of Foxkeys and Walkers) has long stood between the dark things of the world. They are people with the power to hold back the dark tide itself. They are the final shield standing between the demons of the west and humanity.
Vera Fowley, once Vera Foxkey, was a mother, widow, and homeless. What she most decidedly was not was a witch. Chased by the ghosts of her past from St.Louis into the wild west of Texas, she must face her family's legacy to save her daughter and, more importantly, the world from a whole new existence filled with demons and monsters.

The Foxkey Chronicles: What Lurks Below, is an audio drama mini-series taking place in the same universe as the Foxkey Chronicles: What Hides Beneath. It is a visceral mixture of supernatural and horror and takes place in the Old West. Come along on the journey to learn the origin of one heartless bastard by the name of Montgomery Bernard and his sister Enola.
You see kin, some evil is born. Other evil, is made. Montgomery Berhard didn’t start off evil, and his sister, Enola Bernhard, didn’t start off good. They were just children, siblings, born of the same blood and raised by the same father and mother. Then, one day, evil, true evil, came upon their village, forcing the siblings onto different paths and into a future rife with danger.
That future brings us to a misfit trio intent on exploring the world unknown. Skip, Maggie and Joon find themselves in a world of trouble as an urban legend is brought to life. Will they escape the clutches of the fiendish Underground Joe? Or will they die by way of its boney jaws?

The jaws of Underground Joe, in all their complex gorish glory, descended downward towards Skip. Incapsulating him in a cage of bony horror so fast that it was all Skip could do to scream and shrink in on himself, shutting his eyes tight in the hopes he might be transported to somewhere that was not there, in the depths of that cave.
Pain. Screaming Pain. Shouting Pain. That's the sound Underground Joe made as its jaws enclosed upon Skip Palmer, only to crush into something unseen and entirely invisible. Bits of bone and rubbish shattered all around Skip, clattering to join their brethren in the depths of the spring. Breaking so loudly that, for a moment, the sound of it was enough to drown out even Skips' screams.

As if created from nothing at all, a well of water bubbled up from the rocky depths of the earth, forming into the jagged shape of a pool that, again, looked twice as deep as Skip was tall, if not deeper. Moss lined the craggy ridges and dips of its depths, blacker than his and Molly's dark skin. So black that it looked like it might be part of the shadows themselves if not for the way the moss swayed in a current of its own making. The water rippled and shone, reflecting the faint gleam of sunlight onto the walls in an ever-moving pattern, its depths hidden by the moss below.

Inola stood in a river of red. Rich, unfamiliar red, mixing in with river clear, and turning into a milky, pink froth on the banks, as it burbled, and curdled, and sucked at the mud.
Inola stumbled backward, her eyes round, her heart racing.
The garment in her hand dripped with it. The length of her skirt was dyed red with it. And her wrists, oh her wrists, they were stained up to the elbow. Dripping pink ochre. Feeling sick to her stomach, Inola dropped the garment and turned, her feet slushing through the water, churning up rich mud that made the red less obvious but the terror in her heart no less turbulent.

Her youngest brother was less of a brother and more of a tyrant. You know the sort, one of those brothers that knew just the right buttons to push. When it came to Inola, it seemed Montgomery Bernhard had been birthed just to make her life a living hell.

Jack winced away from the wet splash of liquid as it struck him upon the forehead once more and reached up, touching a hand to his face. He lifted his hand towards the light and saw the dark fluid on his fingertips glisten red.

The evening air was filled with an icy chill that saturated the forest, soaking into bark and sap. The tree limbs above creaked and moaned, threatening to burst from the chill. The pines were covered in a layer of snow so deep that one could hardly see their needles, and the same went for the earth.
Jack Handler was a tall man on a tall horse and even he found the thick snow to hamper his onward progress. His own limbs were cold enough to creek in time with the trees above, and his beard had taken on a snowish appearance thanks to the ice and snow that had collected on its hairy surface. He wore his winter finest, shoulders stacked high with furs and a coat of the finest ermine.
The Call grew stronger in his chest, pulling him forward and urging him on. What horrors would he find in the Township of Greyrock?

There is a certain peace that comes over a person when they enter the sacred boundaries of those things we call forests. A finding of at-oneness with nature that comes from the acrid scent of pine tree sap and the deep, loamy squish of nature beneath the feet.
It was no different here, in the barely tamed wild outside the woodlands of Jasper County. Here the trees were so dense, and their crowns were so thick that the air seemed to come from a place unknown, created by the trees themselves. Here, the sky shone blue, the ground glistened with green, and the forest animals seemed scarce and far between. Here was a world all it’s own.It was enough to make an individual feel...at home.

The fire bloomed high into the night, eating rafters, wood, and everything that hid between those four walls. It roared with a power stronger than any fire Vera had seen in her life as if fed by some unnatural source. Why, the flames seemed otherworldly. Violet ribbons chased and leaped from flame tip to flame tip, snapping and caressing the yellow firelight in a way that had Vera questioning her own sight.
Such a fire should have had the whole town burning, but somehow, unbelievably the flames did not leap from house to house. Yet still, the fire claimed. It claimed just as was its purpose.

The sun set, casting hews of purple and pink over the Fowley family wagon as they rolled down the sandy lane. Peering from windows and open doors, the Murkwood residents watched them as they rolled past. Some seemed oddly hostile, while others looked on with open curiosity.
Not a single child ran through the town, no babies cries could be heard through thin walls. In fact, the town was practically desolate. Even the livestock were quiet.

The caravan of refuges and Fowley’s alike stood quiet and uncertain amidst the judmental eyes of the Murkwood residents. The silence was overwhelming and stagnant, just like the air. Then, out from the nicest house in the whole town stepped a woman of no more than twenty-five years. She had bright, corn-blonde hair and the biggest blue eyes Vera had ever seen. And when she saw them, the smile on her face was enough to wipe away the poor welcome of the rest of the townsfolk. She looked the group over with a slowly growing smile as she approached.

Traveling onward, the Fowley family wagon became one of many—a caravan made up of a multitude of men, women, and young adults, all chasing the same destination. Murkwood, it would seem, had become quite popular in the years between Vera's youth and adulthood.
The travelers brought their every worldly possession —plows and tools of the trade, houseware, and livestock—tossed up on wagons or carts or even on the shoulders—anything and everything a person could need or would need to survive.
If what they were doing was considered "surviving," The gathered people were thin and frail, some injured, others not. Whatever energy was left in them appeared to be used to put one foot in front of the other. Altogether, they made a sorry-looking group.
Dirt-covered and grief-stricken, It came as no surprise how easily the Fowleys mixed into the crowd. Why, if you didn’t know any better, you’d think they, too, had been through hell.

Night approached, and clouds strangled the moon, cloaking Ezekiel in darkness, making the encroaching night feel all the more sinister. It was a darkness that felt unnatural, with no glint of star or stirring of wind. Eerily quiet is what it was. Torches, lanterns, and fireplaces came to light as night fell, illuminating the town in spots of golden yellow, like a tapestry of stars.
Beyond the town's lights, the world was cast in darkness so profound it seemed to swallow sound itself.

Greeting to you, kin, clan, and our loyal supporters. We at The Hill Sisters Productions have something we’d like to share with you. A disclaimer, if you like.
You see, We are fully aware that we are playing characters that are not of our age, race, gender, sexuality, and occasionally species. We are not black, native, Asian, or male, but we are two Hispanic sisters with an idea and the tenacity to try and achieve it despite our limited budget. With that in mind, we would like you to think of us as you would an audiobook with a limited cast.
Every episode we do takes over ten hours to make, and that’s a massive amount of time to ask anyone to volunteer for without pay, which is what we do, and happily. We do this project with any spare cash we might have. Unfortunately, that means we do not have the means to hire additional actors. We hope you will forgive us for this. We are merely trying to portray the world in all its beautiful colors and variety to the best of our ability despite our limited means.

With one hand tangled in Brownie's mane, Ezekiel Graves sat upright, taking in the scene before him with a snarl on his lips. Across the distance, he could see a wagon lying overturned on the road, its contents strewn across dry earth. It was illuminated by a single lantern that showed a small group of people huddled glow. There were five, maybe six altogether, hiding within the wagon bed, all bearing makeshift weapons. Their screams echoed back at him, cutting through the quiet night air.

The ground crunched, and she looked down to see the shattered remains of a glass bottle, and beneath that was a brown-red splash of blood that had her gagging and side-stepping off of it. Her boots clacked frantically as she tried to get away, but there was no getting away. The blood was everywhere. An ever-expansive river that had been boiled down to its most basic parts.
Perhaps, if she hadn't been so horrified, she might have noticed the claw marks on the ground, but she didn't.

That's what her father's home was- a burnt-out parcel of coal and once-memories, with rugged pillars of pine sticking up from the ashes in a display of defiance. As if to say, no, we stand strong; we are undefeated. But it was defeated. God, it was.

If only the world were so simple, but it isn’t. Montgomery Bernard was firmly and stoutly in the black, but that was not how he had always been. Before, well, before, he had been gray. Roden, Eastern Tennesse. A town hidden within the shadows of a mountain. A place even it’s own people would be pressured to find on a map. Land rich in hunting and forage, and most importantly gold. Resting outside of Murkwood, Texas, was the Foxkey estate. Once filled with the laughter of nieces and nephews, aunties, and uncles, it now had only one resident, Sirus Foxkey. The manor had been empty for years, but never had he felt more alone than he was now. Sitting there on the veranda with a letter in his hand. A letter from someone he had not seen in twenty-something years, his daughter, Vera.
She wanted to come home, but home to what? Murkwood was not as it had been. The pines and the green that she remembered were gone, replaced by little more than dust and grey. Murkwood was dead, taken by the blight itself, and there was nothing a man in a wheeled chair could do about it. God knows he had tried.

On a homestead, much like any other, lived Wade and Molly Clement. Theirs was a simple life, but that did not mean their daughter, Tangerine Clement, had to like it.
