The English Royal African Company was a mercantile company chartered by the royal Stuart family and City of London merchants in 1660 to trade along the African west coast. The Company was led by the Duke of York, the brother of Charles II, who later took the British throne as James II. The Company transported more enslaved Africans to the Americas than any other institution in the Atlantic slave trade history.
It was established after Charles II rose to the English throne in the Restoration of 1660. While the Company's original purpose was to exploit the goldfields up the Gambia River, identified by Prince Rupert during the Interregnum, it developed a brutal and sustained slave trade in a short period. It also extracted numerous commodities, mainly from the Gold Coast. In 1708, the Company became insolvent in a state of diminished activity until 1752. when there was a transfer of assets to a new company of African Merchants, which held until 1821.
