City of Shadows, City of Light
Thu, 29 Aug 2024 22:17:00 GMT
There were twin cities, once. Because of the stone they could quarry, one city was black and the other was white. They were called by those that lived there The City of Shadows and the City of Light, though their official names had far less poetry in them. They sat on either side of a great tidal river that was so wide it was hard to see one bank from the other.
Jem and Ez met in their boats in the middle of the river. Ez gave Jem a curling stone – the key to fulfill a prophecy so old it had been forgotten by all but the angels. When Jem turns the key, the cities will never be the same again.

I’m sitting on my uncle’s headstone, drinking a glass of claret. He always used to tell me: be careful what you wish for, which never made much sense to me. Why on earth would I want to do that? Wish wildly, wish with abandon – that’s always been much more my style.

I sit on the shore with a photograph I've never seen before, remembering another photograph, that tore my family apart. My therapist says I need closure, but I'm pretty sure that hope is dead. Pandora's white moth, crushed underneath the rest of the mess when she finally opens the box...

Bolt doesn't know what kind of man he is, or what kind of man he'd like to be. The stories he tells about himself change each time they're told, until he no longer knows the truth of them. He goes back to his own beginnings, and he's not sure if the woman he takes from the darkness is a betrayal or a rescue... perhaps he will never find out.

I’m an invader. I’m going to find my way through the maze town, built to confuse and protect the palace. I’m going to get into the palace.

The Complaints Department - Drawing Mia
Thu, 20 Jun 2024 22:50:00 GMT
Mia posts drawings into the Complaints Department letterbox, but so many of her conversations are one sided, it never occurs to her that perhaps someone might talk back until she starts finding drawings all over the city. Drawings almost the same as her own, except for one thing - in these new drawings, she isn't alone, isn't unseen. Slowly, she starts to feel less alone...
This is the eighth story about the Complaints Department - if you like this one, check out the rest :)

The Summoning: The Sands of Time
Thu, 06 Jun 2024 23:22:00 GMT
This is a sequel story to one from way back - "The Summoning". In this episode, I have some special guests to help me with the dialogue - many thanks to Carol and Megan.
The girl who summoned a fire spirit and left with it for a life of adventure is back, and she's in trouble - she trapped the spirit in a bottle at the bottom of the ocean, and because her life is tied to the spirits, she's not free unless she undoes what she did.
The Crazy Bee Woman (not all crazy) is leaving town with a woman who has a fish in her belly. Will they help? Of course they will...

Norah steals into the museum, intent on stealing something. Through a different window, Zebadiah does the same. They’re after an urn that might contain a blessing, or a curse – which it is depends on the answer to the question: what if you got exactly what you wanted?
Who will end up with the urn?
And will they receive a blessing, or a curse?

I found a ticket to an unusual circus and got lost in a hall of mirrors, and I didn’t like what they showed me. The ringmaster told me this was no ordinary circus – that everyone there was the act they came to see. He asked me if I liked my act and I had to say no, I didn’t like it at all. To which he replied: if you don’t like your act, change it…

Aleida is afraid of the jungle. The way it’s crawling with life – vines and lichens and insects and animals, all striving and pulsing and reaching. If she stands still for long enough, she’ll be eaten alive. And it wouldn’t be personal – it’d just be because she was there.
Her uncle sends her into the jungle at night, searching for glowing mushrooms, and Aleida is sure there are hundreds, thousands of eyes staring at her in the dark. Her terror escalates until she runs out of fear… and finds something unexpected on the other side of it.

Morgan loves the railway. The platform, the ticket office, the waiting room, the shining rails. The trains, running neatly to the schedule, keeping time.
At the same time, Morgan hates the railway. The platform, the ticket office, the waiting room, the shining rails. The rigidity of the timetable, the neat columns of hours and minutes dictating the movements of the lumbering trains, the way his days are always the same.
There’s nothing special about Morgan. Until he’s asked by a small, sticky child, who believes he’s magic, how he makes the trains come, and he learns that perhaps he IS magic and perhaps time isn’t his master, but his servant…

The Complaints Department - The Wrong Life
Thu, 29 Feb 2024 23:12:00 GMT
The Complaints Department is back for their seventh instalment.
Joseph is living the wrong life. Every day he gets up, puts on a clean white shirt and neat black trousers and goes to sit in an office, answering telephones, aching with longing for something more. He comes across the Complaints Department by accident and doesn’t believe that it’s real – he thinks it’s enough to take an action that means nothing, posting a complaint into a letterbox that clearly goes nowhere.
Except… it doesn’t go nowhere, and Joseph gets more than he bargained for…

One thing Zig knows is that she can get used to anything.
When Zig’s parents get divorced, she’s sent to live with her Aunt Mez where things are very different – just until the dust settles, her father says, and Zig imagines dust blanketing everything.
Living with Aunt Mez, Zig finds out that she's bigger on the inside, gets a rabbit called Catastrophe and learns that there's more than one kind of wicked.
And then the dust settles...

The Dead Letter Office: Caleb Hunts a Song
Thu, 04 Jan 2024 23:07:00 GMT
Caleb is haunted by a troubled past – lost innocence and the ghost of the man he killed. His longing to return to the youth he was before it all went wrong drives him to the Dead Letter Office, in search of a song his grandmother used to sing. There, he’s faced with a choice of five doors. Will the door he chooses lead him to what he seeks? This is a special episode, because it features the Dead Letter Office - which is where my first novel is set. The novel is very much still in draft form, but it's exciting to be exploring the world through short stories. Thanks for listening, and I hope you enjoy it. The Complaints Department: Light Through Glass
Thu, 07 Dec 2023 23:00:00 GMT
Fiona finds the Complaints Department letterbox by watching a stranger post a letter in what looks like a holy moment. Longing for a moment of her own, she pushes a hastily written complaint through the flap. She doesn’t get her holy moment, but what she does get is Silas, bent on being “benevolently confusing” – and she finds a different way of looking at herself and at the world. Thanks for listening. Where the Surrealists go to Play

Menny is standing on a rooftop in the rain, irritated by everything. He’s waiting for the sun to come out so he can paint the rainbow across the sky. But Menny is colourblind and the rain has washed the ‘this way up’ arrow from the lid of his tin of rainbow paint and if he gets it wrong, he’ll be out of a job… can he trust the leprechaun who leaves the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow to help him? The Complaints Department: Strobe Light Days
Fri, 29 Sep 2023 02:12:00 GMT
Days reel past Sienna in strobe light flashes. Breathless and disoriented, she happens across a letterbox in the wall of an alley with ‘Complaints Department’ written above it, and finds herself pushing her feelings through the metal flap.
Sadie, a field officer for the Complaints Department, offers her a way out – will Sienna remember the chance she’s been given in the midst of the relentless passing of time? And if she does, will she accept it and find a way off the hamster wheel that her life has become?
Build yourself a blanket fort, get comfortable and find out…

The Day Before Elsie & Maude Win the Lottery
Fri, 15 Sep 2023 02:00:00 GMT
Elsie and Maude sit at the bus stop outside Halfway to Heaven, watched over by one of the interchangeable Jessicas who sits behind the reception desk through the glass doors. They can’t face going back inside to what passes for life through those doors.
But that’s okay, because tomorrow, they’re going to win the lottery…

Burke & The Secret Of Eternal Life
Fri, 01 Sep 2023 02:00:00 GMT
Burke is a villainous villain who rides a penny farthing and owns a haunted cat. He’s bent on keeping everything a secret from everyone – particularly the whereabouts of the secret of eternal life.
Things start to go wrong when the clockwork armadillo he’s built to dig a tunnel to the home of the Eternal Monk runs down part-way, and he can’t fit into the hole to wind it.
His refusal to trust the people he has to turn to for help makes life more and more difficult… will he finish the tunnel and find the Eternal Monk and the secret he craves above all else?

We met Joke and Morganna in the very first story - and now they're back, continuing their quest for dragons and for the ninth world (or call it exile if you want). Will the shape shifting figurehead turn into something that isn’t a penguin? Will Minette survive being thrown overboard? Get comfortable, listen, and find out…

The Complaints Department: Jol's Sister
Fri, 04 Aug 2023 02:00:00 GMT
This week, we revisit the Complaints Department as they resolve another existential complaint. If you haven't heard any of their stories yet, perhaps you'd like to scroll back a bit and listen to some of the earlier ones - or just dive in here!
Jol spends his life looking at the ground, trying to hold himself together so tight that he doesn’t fall into pieces, desperately hoping for closure he knows isn’t coming.
Until a flash of red at the corner of his vision leads him to the Complaints Department – a letterbox he’s never seen before in the wall of an alley he walks along every week. He whispers his secret longing through the flap, and he isn’t prepared for what happens next…

The All-Night All-Clean Laundry
Fri, 21 Jul 2023 02:00:00 GMT
Mavis understands ducks and machines, but she isn’t good with people. So when a twitchy wizard shows up at her laundromat at 3am with no change needing clean socks and to be saved from himself, she is not amused. But with the fate of the world (and more importantly, her laundromat) at stake, what else is she to do…

First, credit and my grateful thanks to Carol - one of my excellent patrons and generally excellent human - for coming up with the title for this story!
Angeline is minding her own business with the crossword (nothing cryptic, mind, just the straightforward one), when there’s an almighty crash from outside.
A large, naked, glowing man has crash landed in her petunias.
Angeline isn’t prepared for this. Angeline will never be prepared for this.
Her worst nightmare is unfolding in front of her eyes. How is she going to unsee what she has just seen and restore her peace of mind?

It takes Jasmin years to remember how to be alone again after her children are grown, removing all the coats she’d accumulated one by one. How did she get to be wearing so many of them? A lifetime of coats. Sensible dark woollen coats, heirloom fur coats, bulky padded winter coats. Spring coats thrown over shoulders just in case of rain. Coats made of ‘should’, coats made of ‘ought to’, coats made of duty and obligation and responsibility. Heavy, cumbersome coats.
She peels them from her body and stuffs them in the spare room until she’s removed enough to feel a silvery tug, pulling at her. It pulls her down to the beach and along the pier, it pulls her onto the silver-gold path that stretches across the water to the full, rising moon. The water is shimmery under her feet and Jasmin feels like dancing.
What happens when the moon goes behind a cloud and the path disappears?
What happens when the moon rises out of the water? Will the path stop beneath it? Will there be a ladder?
On the moon, Jasmin meets a rabbit who asks her a riddle she doesn’t know the answer to.
On the moon, Jasmin meets the Moon herself, and Jasmin is a child again, asking impossible questions.
The Moon doesn’t answer in words, but Jasmin receives answers nonetheless…

The Complaints Department: Carnival Thinking
Fri, 09 Jun 2023 02:00:49 GMT
Laurie’s life feels meaningless. Every time she grasps at meaning, every time she tries to decide what her life should be about, meaning evaporates. Hope is like an hourglass and the sand keeps ticking through.
Late one night, Laurie pushes her complaint through the Complaints Department letterbox and keeps hoping.
Laurie doesn’t know what she was expecting, but it wasn’t Sadie, the young, annoyingly effervescent woman who takes her by the arm and leads her into the carnival, challenging everything Laurie thought she knew to be real...

Annie lives with a demon on her shoulder, criticising everything she does. Mostly, she agrees with it. She’s 42. Shouldn’t she have done more with her life? Shouldn’t she be more than she is, by now?
Until her fairy godmother arrives, running a bit late.
Will Annie be granted the wit and beauty and charm she should have received at birth? Will her fairy godmother be a match for the demon? Will Annie finally be able to stand up straight, without the weight of the demon stamping its feet on her shoulder?
Pull up a chair, get comfortable, and find out…

Emilie Underhamer is planning on living forever. Her plans are ruined when she wakes up dead, so to speak, to find a thief with his hands in her safe. It's safe to say she is not amused. The thief has troubles of his own - he's being played by the ruthless head of the Scoundrel's Quarter, who, coincidentally, is also planning on living forever. His plans are also foiled, as the plot thickens and then thickens some more...
Ghosts, thieves, alchemists, talking parrots and Lady Luck herself - who will come out on top?

There's an unexpected knock at Alma's door. It's a suit, with a man in it. A smooth, smiling man, whose words run rings around her and whose teeth are too white. This is new magic, a kind she hasn't seen before. Can Alma, with her old, twisty, earth magic, outwit him and save her house?

The Complaints Department: Silas and the Serial Complainer
Thu, 13 Apr 2023 14:00:00 GMT
In today's story, we return to the Complaints Department and meet Silas.
Silas is brooding, mysterious, and does it on purpose. He’s a field officer at the Complaints Department, a mysterious organisation that resolves complaints of an existential nature. The Complaints Department endeavours to address all complaints within 30 days.
Mr Cotton (having looked over the wall and seen the Complaints Department letterbox goes nowhere) isn’t sure the Complaints Department is even real, and yet something keeps him writing reams of petty and contradictory complaints every day, trying to provoke a response.
Today is the twenty-ninth day. There’s a knock on the door. It’s Silas.

Can I tell you a story?
Joke (don’t ask him why his name is Joke) is the ruthless pirate captain of the finest sky ship in all the eight worlds. He tries to double cross the pirate queen and she sends him on a quest (call it exile if you want) to find the ninth world. He hopes he finds dragons out there, because he intends to tame one. He hopes the partner he’s been lumped with falls overboard. He hopes his ship’s shape changing figurehead turns into something other than a penguin, which rather spoils the effect of the majestic galleon cutting through the stars...
Will he get his heart’s desire?
I hope you enjoy the story.
If you do, let me know! I'm thinking it might be fun to write another installment about space pirates and the search for dragons...
*update April 14, 2023* the space pirates have demanded another story - stay tuned for their next episode, out in a few months.
