Not content to merely scavenge data on the NET, this young Netrunner has broken one of the most dangerous taboos in the game: he has created his own artificial intelligence. A.I.lyson, an artificial construct in the shape of Fitz's childhood crush, is the only person in the world Fitz can trust, and together they have made a name for themselves in the shadowy realm of cyberspace.
However, the brightest stars burn the fastest, and after years of going up against dangerous Black ICE software, Fitz's prefrontal cortex has taken a beating. The doctors at Biotechnica say the brain cancer is terminal, and they give him maybe three years to live. In the face of oblivion, Fitz must create his legacy. Marsh Cho is a Corporate soldier, indentured by an employment contract to the Militech Corporation, a faceless gun-for-hire in the largest private army on Earth. Twenty five years after the 4th Corporate War, Militech and Arasaka are still at each other's throats, with the American and Japanese governments unable (or unwilling) to intercede.
When Arasaka attempts to sway legislation in the Free State of North California, their economic rival will stop at nothing to prevent Arasaka's return to the American marketplace. When bribery and threats fail to put an end to Arasaka's schemes, Militech sends Corporal Cho to assassinate an Arasaka-owned NorCal Senator.
When corporations pull the strings of government, and when rival MegaCorps battle for global dominance, people like Marsh either do what their Corpo masters ask, or suffer their wrath.

"Death to Chikara!" screams the crowded audience at a Nu Metal concert in Night City, as The Fux vent their fury into their music.
The Fux were just another anti-authoritarian rap rock group performing in punk bars and warehouse venues until they ran afoul of the Chikara Security Corporation. When the band refused to censor their anti-capitalist lyrics, the Corp placed a hit out on them, sending gangsters to assassinate the trouble-makers.
The surviving members of the band waged a series of guerrilla raids against Chikara in retaliation, bombing their transports and burning their warehouses. All the while, the band gained support from the common folk of Night City who hated the Mega-Corp as much as they did, and their music was played on pirate broadcasts all over the world.
It wasn't enough though.
Boycotting Chikara, exposing their corruption, even carbombing their supply lines, none of it amounted to anything more than a minor nuisance to the Corp. Chikara was just too big. They owned the record companies, they owned the concert venues, they owned the radio stations.
Finally, Chikara has sent over a flag of truce, giving the band a meeting with one of their subsidiary companies, City of Dreams Record Studios. The Fux stands at a crossroads: will they set bygones aside and sell out to The Man, or continue to spiral down the warpath? Vengeance is a fire that's hard to douse, and a Rockstar's ego is a hard beast to tame...
