Synopsis:

At Session Zero Heroes we believe in the power of storytelling through tabletop roleplaying games and use a wide variety of systems to create these stories which we share through the podcast medium. From hilarious to emotional our stories and themes come in all shapes and sizes and help us to create amazing series and one-shots for your listening pleasure! Our primary anchor shows include Benders & Brews: An Avatar Legends Actual Play which is the show that started it all! In this series we jump into the world of Avatar the Last Airbender as a group of teens fight back rival tea shops and the occasional run-in with pirates and the Fire Nation in order to save their own tea shop: The Blissful Brew. We also host a Dungeons & Dragons series called Criminals of Isla Numus where a handful of characters are thrown into a deities pocket dimension with the goal of making 1,000,000 gold in the space of roughly a year’s time. Will they be able to overcome a variety of obstacles and struggles and accomplish their task? Or will they fail and be trapped in this pocket world forever? In addition to these anchor shows we create a variety of one-shots within different systems to share shorter tales of adventure and excitement.

Black Friday of the Dead - An All Flesh Must Be Eaten Actual Play | Episode 2: Hallways & Hail Marys

In episode 2 our team of shoppers discovers a group of survivors that have barricaded themselves in a bookstore in the mall's east wing. Now it's up to them to decide how they can help these survivors and get them to the roof of the mall by midnight. So far they've had a little bit of luck fighting off the undead, but will that luck continue? Or will they find themselves overrun as they seek out a distraction they can use to rescue their new friends?

Now trapped inside, our team of survivors will have to do everything they can in order to stay alive until rescue can come. Will they make it? Or be eaten alive by the walking dead?

A turn of events which caused the undead to rise! Trapped in the mall filled with the undead with presents to pick up before an escape can be led. To top it all off, there are survivors to save, maybe they can help keep our team from the grave. So join us this season for a great escapade, an adventure embodying the spirit of this American holiday. In the aftermath of the DinoQuest Park Catastrophe, a mysterious message found its way to four individuals each a specialist in their field. This message outlined a dangerous mission of unimaginable reward which would send each of these agents to the abandoned island overrun with the ancient reptiles for which it got its name.

Their goal? Reach the DinoQuest headquarters at the center of the island and safely abscond with the coveted Dinosaur DNA from its forsaken laboratory. Not to mention the allure of seeing a real-life dinosaur before their very eyes. As the echoes of this journey reverberate through our intrepid team, one fact remains true. We are all, about to take our first steps, onto Dino Island!

In Episode 0 we introduce our intrepid team of prehistoric pathfinders as each player describes who they're playing, highlights from their character's playbook, and what their secret objective is they hope to accomplish by the end of this series!

Today, we sit down with Skyler, Jackson, Cameron, and Dave to look over the new Daggerheart (created by Darrington Press) TTRPG system's open-beta Character Creation system! We'll go over the various Classes, Subclasses, Domains, Ancestries, Communities, and more as we design our own characters within the Daggerheart system and compare some of the similarities and differences we notice between it and other TTRPG systems!

We're incredibly excited at the release of the open beta for the Daggerheart system and we greatly enjoyed creating characters within it! The system is incredibly versatile while also maintaining a simple-to-understand walkthrough that any player can pick up. Additionally, it does a phenomenal job on developing story and character development over too much focus on numbers and math which we always appreciate!

In Episode 1 our teens and kids are about to enter the Ice Cream Satisfactory and take their first steps towards potentially becoming the richest kid in the world by taking over the ice cream empire, but before they can they will need to survive the strange and dangerous world inside the factory. What sort of mysterious challenges will they face? What creatures will they meet? How much ice cream will they consume? And probably the most important question is, which kid will Dilly Dunker choose to become the next dairy king or queen?

In the sprawling capital of Sorbet City, New Gelato is the headquarters for one of the most well-known frozen treat producers in the world: Dilly Dunker’s Ice Cream Satis-Factory. Well known for its wide variety of frozen treats and flavors they have swept the world by storm over the five decades they’ve existed, but with the company’s 50th anniversary coming up has come a major announcement that has shaken the world as much as it’s MilkQuakes have: the retirement of Dilly Dunker. Once a spry young dairyman with dreams to make the world’s most creative frozen delights, now a frail image of his former self slowly fading away on his frozen throne he seeks to pass on his success to an equally imaginative youth who can spark a whole new liveliness to his brand.

In Episode 0 we meet the players and their characters who will be embarking on this ice cream adventure inspired by Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the Wonka prequel movie. Finding themselves in a tavern the gang discusses what their next moves should be. With a little bit of cash padding their pockets from their casino escapade, they're hungry for more. Feather McGregor suggests they work for his sauce shop, but the group meets a mysterious patron of the tavern who offers them a "less than legal" alternative. Which will they choose?

Additionally, we get to see a quick glimpse of Lil' Sauce's secret career as he stops by his office to speak with the sergeant of the secret police organization known simply as Blankspace. What does McGregor have to tell them, and how will this police organization handle the introduction of the four strangers he's hanging out with?

In episodes 1 & 2 the team finds themselves in the strange city of Isla Numus and JarJim (the god of gambling) informs them of their predicament. He has trapped them in the pocket dimension of his own creation as a punishment for not following through with a gamble one of the players made with him and so he has trapped the group in his world with a challenge: accumulate one million gold in the span of one year.

Finding themselves in brand new bodies the team must figure out what this city has to offer and how they will amass this incredible quantity of gold in order to escape this pocket dimension and return to their normal lives and bodies. Maybe, with the help of a local (Feather McGregor aka Lil' Sauce) they might just be able to accomplish their mission.

Criminals of Isla Numus: Episode 0 - A Dungeons & Dragons Actual Play

Welcome to Isla Numus, a sprawling city embedded within a deity's pocket dimension. For the diety, JarJim (patron god of gambling), this place is just his plaything, but the people and lives residing within his little world are very active as they make their way to and from their jobs, groups, and other activities. Isla Numus features a wide-variety of species, history, lore, gangs, religions, businesses, and everything in-between.

With all that being said, all but one of our players are not originally from this world, in fact their from the primary material plane where they ran into JarJim in his mortal form pretending to be trapped in the Underdark and tagging along with the players who were trying to escape. Unfortunately, for our band of heroes, they got him upset by not following through with his bets and gambling and as punishment he decided to trap them inside his world with the challenge of amassing one million gold pieces in the span of a year in order to return to their original world, and original bodies.

In Episode 0 we get an introduction to who the players were, and the creatures they are now trapped inside. With brand new bodies and brand new skills, not to mention being knocked all the way back to level 1, the group must find an ally who knows this world to work alongside them as they grow in skills and in finances in hopes of getting out.

What sort of leads will they get? And how much closer will it get them to their goal of finding whatever has been taking these teens, and hopefully saving the victims from certain death?

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT: Session Zero Heroes + Future Content

Hey everyone! We did it! We completed two whole seasons of our amazing Benders & Brews anchor show! Thank you all for the amazing support and love you've been sending our way! We're excited to announce that we're changing some things around for our (now) CHANNEL! That's right, we're growing our content to better share our amazing stories that we love so much to tell. The podcast name and brand will now become SESSION ZERO HEROES and our social media channels will also be adjusted as well to reflect that.

The primary reason we are making this change is because of our new content and shows we will be adding in to the channel. We have a D&D 5e podcast that will be airing outside of our Benders & Brews seasons and become our second anchor show. Additionally, we have some fun and exciting ideas for future one-shots and games as well all of this can no longer be contained in the name "Benders & Brews" so we're adjusting it to reflect the overall channel and avoid confusion.

What does this mean for Benders & Brews? Woah, no worries we all know you love our Avatar the Last Airbender-based series and that's not going away. Benders & Brews will return April 2024, as planned, for season 3! So nothing to worry about. We just want to make sure you all have fun and entertaining content to listen to in the meantime so that we're not just dead air for half of the year.

Having been captured by a familiar crew of pirates, the gang is forced to work and do chores on the ship, but some of the crewmates aren't as bad as their chosen career path might make them out to be, but one thing is for certain, they're expecting the clues the group got from Mr. Okuran to lead to some sort of spectacular treasure, and not a will for a tea shop. What will the gang do stuck alongside the ship of treasure-hungry pirates and ensure they can make it to their goal in time?

Madame Yang has been trapped by an unexpected Earthbending attack from Brock giving the rest of the gang the perfect opportunity to really pull ahead in the battle of the teas!

Meanwhile, Bill and Guo are dealing with some problems at the Blissful Brew booth! It seems that the influx of customers who aren't partaking in Hot Leaf Juice's inferior tea have been swarming the Blissful Brew's beverage stand, and Mr. Okuran fears they will soon run out of ingredients and fall behind. It's up to Bill to go out and hopefully find the ingredients Brock tossed into the maze.

With Makala out and her character Meeka trying to hide from the Hot Leaf Juice team, that leaves tonight up to the guys in the boy's night special episode!

Brock is tasked with the tough decision of dropping his infiltration work at the HLJ booth in favor of possibly causing them trouble in new ways, but he notices something strange is up when Madame Yang makes the claim that someone on her staff MUST be a mole and starts calling them away to a side room to "give them a talk." What kinds of things might she be asking/telling them? Will Brock be able to keep up the facade?

Meanwhile, Bill and Guo struggle to keep up with the Blissful Brew booth as unsatisfied customers from HLJ, inside the mansion, are trying the tea that the outside vendor is making and finding it much more to their liking. Can the duo keep up with the orders? And will HLJ try anything nefarious against them and their tea booth? Find out in this episode of Benders & Brews!

Everything so far has led up to this point: The big rich-people party hosted by the Yotaku family (co-hosted by the Shifu family), the very same one that led Mr. Okuran to believe he'd be catering it and then canceled on him last minute leaving him in financial ruin, but thanks to Meeka's quick-thinking last episode the crew from The Blissful Brew are back in!

Now that they're getting set up and the part is about to start they're going to have to deal with their rivals Hot Leaf Juice from Ba Singh Se who is out to get them and shut them down! Who knows what kind of craziness and drama will happen during this party! The only way to find out is to listen to the episode!

Episode 6 coming at you hot! Don't spill it all over your lap because things are heating up at this tea party! The group is finally confronted by their new arch-nemesis: Madame Yang, owner of the gang's competition tea chain: Hot Leaf Juice.

The group has a number of plans of ways they can beat out their competition: some light sabotage followed by absolutely schooling them in tea making! BUT the question is, can they pull it all off? And does Hot Leaf Juice have similar plans to get back at them during the party? Needless to say, this catering job is about to become an all-out war!

Welcome to Episode 1 of the Benders & Brews podcast! Discover the characters and their story as we take a look into their world. We open on The Blissful Brew Tea Shop on a regular day. Inside Bill Door waits on tables, Guo Han runs the register, Brock and Meeka are both cleaning dishes all while Mr. Okuran creates his delectable tea and pastry creations.

As Mr. Okuran steps out for an errand, the crew is left to deal with a particularly unsavory character: a drunk man who is feeling particularly rowdy as he demands alcohol in a tea shop. How will the crew deal with the troublemaker and will they be able to do so before Mr. Okuran gets back? And without causing too much damage to the shop? Welcome to Session 0 of the Benders & Brews podcast! We'll be talking with each of the players who will give you a brief overview of the characters they'll be playing which include the following:

  • Brock Lee: An Earthbender who is the (non-canonical) son of the very popular cabbage farmer (you know the one from the show).
  • Bill Door: A non-bending, refugee who is fleeing from the Fire Nation and finds himself in the bustling city of Gaoling working at The Blissful Brew Tea Shop as a waiter.
  • Guo Han: A short and slightly stout Earthbender who grew up in a traveling carnival where he learned all sorts of interesting tricks and schemes.
  • Meeka: A Waterbender who was banished by her own tribe and now seeks to decide if she's looking for a family, or will continue to fend for herself as she has since the loss of her father.
