This episode went a different but welcomed direction than planned. Once I started talking about the negativity around failure in society, and how we often can’t deal with it well ourselves in the Western world. This brought out speaking about my personal experience with dealing with obesity in a lens I rarely expose. Those who know me can recall or have heard that I gained a lot of weight into my twenties before a health scare, which led me towards a healthier lifestyle. What I’ve rarely openly talked about are the depths or reasons I ate like that to begin with, or how long the mental issues which arose from it lingered for decades afterwards. It felt important to voice the unsaid things of my battles, sometimes lost, in working to continue being healthy after my weight loss.
I am grateful now that I’m able to admit to myself that I am healthy, and while I ‘could’ always be healthier, I know full well I’m not that twenty-one-year-old kid who landed in the hospital; I am, and have been, taking responsibility for my actions so I never truly go astray again.
