Mörk Borg: Cult of the Blood God

Mon, 17 Jun 2024 12:54:56 GMT

Yeah, ya boy knows how to get the umlaut above the "o" so the name of the game is correct.

It's okay to be impressed/slightly aroused.

In this extra-long episode, our usual gaggle of weirdos sat down to play the adventure Cult of the Blood God by Hexhog. The adventure is gory, weird, and definitely worth your time. I mean, who doesn't love ending a one-shot with a chase scene???

Thanks again to our fantastic guests:

Mr. Ray, host of $2 Creature Feature fame (https://2dollarcreature.carrd.co/)!

Eric Crumrine, host of The Queer XP

And CJ [LAST NAME REDACTED], host of DnD game I was once in with a bunch of strangers. He always baked bread for the games and I think that was pretty cool of him.

Light Side Episode I...or IV?

Tue, 30 May 2023 04:00:03 GMT

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...

No, not there. I'll tell you when you're close. No, just keep going. Farther...almost. OK yep, right there. Perfect.

We're playing Light Side, an unofficial indie Star Wars TTRPG by Ian Mauldin and Cap (https://ianmauldin.itch.io/light-side).

And what's this, the return of a beloved guest, Mr. Ray of $2 Creature Feature fame (https://2dollarcreature.carrd.co/)! Not only did Mr. Ray agree to run this game for us, he also wrote some super sweet additional playbooks for Light Side (https://mr-ray.itch.io/light-side-legends-playbooks).

And best of all, everything here is free because they can't make money off the IP! WHEEEE!

Unrelatedly...

One Shot: Our God Is Dead

Mon, 14 Nov 2022 05:00:26 GMT

We interviewed designer Jordan Palmer about this game back in March 2021 and now, a brisk 20 months later, we're playing it! Richard & Nate are joined by returning guests CJ Mickey and Mr. Ray (of $2 Creature Feature fame) for this sacrilegiously good time. We hope you enjoy it and also that we aren't smote down by some divine being with a terrible sense of humor.

If you want to grab a copy of this game, head over to https://tabletop.itch.io/our-god-is-dead and support a wonderful indie creator. And check out his other stuff, too! We especially like Perilous and For the Dungeon!

Head to https://curatrix-ribston.itch.io. for more information and follow @FearsandFathoms on Twitter...IF YOU DARE!!!

Hearthside Chat with Ribston Pippin, author of Fears & Fathoms!

Mon, 10 Oct 2022 04:00:02 GMT

If I had a nickel for every time we interviewed a French/French Canadian game designer, I'd have like...20 cents. I mean, it's not a ton of cash but it's still pretty weird. Anyway, we had a really great time speaking with Wendy and we hope you enjoy this episode. If you also want to speak with Wendy, maybe come hang out at our Discord (https://discord.gg/BNBDF7fBuG) as she has become a welcomed regular in the past few weeks! Or you could reach out to her directly via Twitter @RibstonP or @FearsAndFathoms.

If you want to grab a copy of Fears & Fathoms, you don't have to wait for the Kickstarter; Grab a PDF here https://curatrix-ribston.itch.io! If you want a copy of the wild west adventure or shady government operative adventure for Fears & Fathoms, you DO have to wait for the upcoming Kickstarter. It should be launching in early November but we'll let you know as we get closer.

Oh, and make sure you tune in next week for our actual play of Fears & Fathoms! It is epic(ly stupid but funny).

The Inn Between: Spelljammer!

Mon, 26 Sep 2022 04:00:37 GMT

Conan and Eric rejoin Rich and Nate to discuss our award winning* Spelljammer AP. We cover everything from how to handle interspecies love at the table to what even is a steampunk. We also discuss how WotC completely stepped in it with the Hadozee because sometimes its just fun to punch up at a deserving target.

Oh, and Wild Wild West IS steampunk and if you disagree, please reach out directly to Conan via his Twitter, @conan_lybarian. He also disagrees and you can enjoy being wrong together.

Mon, 19 Sep 2022 04:00:05 GMT

Well hello there, space listeners! Space DM Conan (@Conan_Lybarian) let me in on a little secret: you can make anything fit Spelljammer if you throw "space" in front of it. Space hamster. Space castle. Space colonoscopy. Anything! He's a remarkable man.

Anyway! Thanks to both Conan and returning guest Eric (@ECrumrine) for hanging out with us! Tune in next week for our Inn Between episode in which we discuss space fantasy, sex in TTRPGs, and how badly WotC fucked up with the Hadozee.

Oh, and go buy Conan's game. It's wicked good and I know you'll love it: https://conan-lybarian.itch.io/

Join Nate, Rich, and returning guest Eric (@ECrumrine) on this most excellent space adventure, and without any problematic WotC stuff!

Summer Break Rewind: Fight Bears, Cough Blood, Kill God

Mon, 29 Aug 2022 12:40:22 GMT

The signs of summer ending are all here. Leaves are falling! Kids are going back to school! My rich, golden tan is fading away like Marty McFly after his mom tried to bone him! I'm sad to see it go, sure, but I'm glad we get to bring you new, wonderful things starting next week! Thanks for sticking with us over the last month.

In this episode, Richard and Nate decided to ignore the millions upon millions of fans begging to come on the show and rocked this episode on their own. Their egos cannot be contained.

And, of course, they couldn't stand to tell a normal heartwarming story, no. They had to go and spin the tale of Devin, a recently divorced janitor who wanted nothing more than to become a wizard and the washed up dodgeball trainer who saw in him the heart of a champion.

Yeah, they got weird with it. Surprise!

If you want to get weird with it, grab a copy of Fight Bears, Cough Blood, Kill God for yourself via https://luciellaes.itch.io/fight-bears-cough-blood-kill-god.

Oh, and in addition to this actual play, Nate also reviewed the game for the website!

Summer Break Rewind: The Quiet Year

Mon, 22 Aug 2022 12:00:52 GMT

Summertime and the livin’ is…increasingly difficult with no sense of progress.

Anyway!

Nate, Richard, Ryan, and special guest Christine spend one final year aboard the colony ship The Floating Ovum as they deal with your typical Quiet Year issues - insurrection, alien incursions, cannibalism, and a hot new soft drink sweeping the colony!

Will they survive? Will the colony make Nebulon 7 a garden paradise? And what exactly is Zygmoid the alien up to?

And boy did we get SUPER FRIGGEN WEIRD with it, and I mean more than usual. Which is honestly impressive given our usual game steez.

Grab a copy of the game here: https://buriedwithoutceremony.com/the-quiet-year

See you in September!

Questlandia: Part One

Mon, 04 Jul 2022 04:00:13 GMT

After interviewing Hannah Shaffer, we knew we had to play Turtlebun's Questlandia (https://turtlebun.itch.io/questlandia). This episode has everything you need, provided what you need is a town built around drinking bug pee, social upheaval, questionable casting choices, and not a small amount of IMDB trivia.

This first episode has all our world building and character creation, so enjoy it and make sure you come back next week when we play through the world we created. I'm a big fan of how it turned out and I hope you all enjoy. Thanks for listening!

Corner Office: Part Two

Mon, 20 Jun 2022 04:00:41 GMT

Hello, Actioneers! It has recently come to management's attention that many of you are using this podcast as a means of distracting yourself from the doldrums of the day. This is unacceptable. Doldrums and depression suffered by our employees are not to be remedied by entertainment. They are to be suffered through in stoic silence as the only true cure for misery is a love of hard work and a dedication to Company Co. Be Glad You're Sad! Let the triviality of an existence spent within your cube inspire you to achieve great things, not for yourself but for our shareholders! And remember, the beatings will continue until morale improves.

Once again, we want to give a special adulation to our Actioneer Conan the Lybarian (@Conan_Lybarian) for working through his lunch hours to come up with the game we're playing this week, Corner Office. If you see Conan in the halls or by the water cooler, make sure you give him a firm pat on the back and let him know what a good job he did. Of course, please do not exceed the single pat on the back. Two or more pats on the back will be considered harassment and/or assault and perpetrators of such acts will be subject to the Disciplinary Board. If you would like to have  a positive fiscal impact on Conan's bottom line, please consider picking up a copy of Corner Office from his itch.io page: https://conan-lybarian.itch.io/corner-office/devlog/290350/welcome

Now if you would be so kind, please return to your desks before we have to release the efficiency wasps from the vents.

Corner Office: Part One

Good morning, you productive little worker bees! This is Nate from HR and I just want to thank you for your hard work and dedication in these troubling and challenging times. Though the apocalypse may be raging outside, inside the walls of Company Co. Headquarters, our only concerns should be promoting a synergy-focused work environment and seeking new avenues of revenue development.

We want to give a special adulation to our Actioneer Conan the Lybarian (@Conan_Lybarian) for working through his lunch hours to come up with the game we're playing this week, Corner Office. One Shot: This Game Takes Place in Your Home Town

Mon, 06 Jun 2022 04:00:36 GMT

Richard and I haven't had the chance to hang out face-to-face recently, what with the move and all. We thought we'd remedy that with a good ol' fashion Jenga-based TTRPG! Last time, we played the excellent Wickies and made it all the way to the end of the game without dying somehow. Can we push our luck again and come survive the fall of our hometown? Will our Jenga tower collapse just like society has? Can soup cans float in water?

Tune in and find out for yourself!

...also, no. Soup cans do not float in water. Shoutout to a mysterious Twitter user known only as The Scientist for conducting an experiment to prove once and for all soup cans cannot float. More like cant's of soup, amirite?

Grab a copy of Jack Blair's (@toyourstations) This Game Takes Place in Your Home Town today and try your hand at navigating a very personal apocalypse!

Mon, 23 May 2022 04:00:07 GMT

Hello! Cory and Melanie came back on to discuss all things Kids on Bikes. We got deep into the genre and talked about crafting a game on the fly vs giving the DM greater creative control in the planning process. We also spent a long time discussing David Lynch. Like...a long time.

And stay through to the end for our PAX recap!!!

Thanks for joining us for the conclusion of our Kids on Bikes episode! All considering, I think it came out great and I can't wait for y'all to hear it. Now stop reading and start listening!

Kids on Bikes: A-MAIZE-ing Adventures Part One

Mon, 09 May 2022 04:00:33 GMT

Hello you sweet and wonderful listeners! Cory, Melanie, Richard, and Nate got together via Al Gore's internet to play Jonathan Gilmour & Doug Levandowski's Kids on Bikes. If you're a fan of 80s popular media and yearn for a simpler, more monster-y time, I can't recommend Kinds on Bikes enough. The system is simple and narrative-focused but unlike many other story-centric TTRPGs, not without important choices and exciting rolls.

If that sounds like something you'd be into, treat yourself (and Jonathan and Doug, for that matter) by grabbing a copy from Renegade Games today: https://renegadegamestudios.com/kids-on-bikes/

And make sure you come back next week for the wild conclusion to our game!

One Shot: Purplest Prose - Maiden Voyage

Mon, 14 Feb 2022 05:00:00 GMT

Aww yeah it's that time of year again and your favorite boys are back with another romantic tale to give you that lovin' feeling. This year we played Pammu's (@TheDovetailor) "Purplest Prose", which the author describes as "a game about coming together to write the trashiest romance stories you can think of!"

I think we absolutely achieved the trash part of that.

If you want to grab a copy of this game for yourself and/or support a fantastic indie author, head to Pammu's itch page - https://thedovetailor.itch.io/. We can't wait to see what she publishes next.

And of course, thanks again to special guests and Patrons Cory (@BoondockJoker) and Zac (@Conan_Lybarian) for joining us!

The Inn Between: Designing Adventures with...Yu-Gi-Oh! Cards!?

Mon, 07 Feb 2022 05:00:00 GMT

Each day we move further from God's light, and there's been no greater evidence of late than this episode. Richard, Cory, Ryan, and Nate sat down to paw through a ziploc bag of old Yu-Gi-Oh cards and then did their best to come up with a cohesive story. It was like trying to knit a sweater out of spaghetti. Or play soccer with a bowling ball. But dammit, in the end we did it, wet sweater and broken toes and all.

Enjoy!

Hearthside Chat with Cat McDonald of Peach Garden Games

Mon, 31 Jan 2022 05:00:00 GMT

Howdy folks! We sat with Cat to chat about this and that. Okay I promise never to to that again. Cat is an amazing asset to the TTRPG community, both as a designer and as a facilitator of the Solo But Not Alone charity bundles on itch.io.

As of today (1/30/22), Cat's raised over $50,000 over the past two years in support of Jasper's Game Day, a wonderful charity focusing on suicide prevention. If you'd like to support this worthy cause and grab over 100 solo RPGs, head here and give what you can: https://itch.io/b/1227/solo-but-not-alone-2

And hey, maybe look through the past few weeks of reviews over on www.podofblunders.com where we've been reviewing games from the bundle. There's so much quality stuff that we'll keep on reviewing these games until the sale ends in March.

If you want to check out some of Cat's other games, especially the FANTASTIC Heroic Chord, head to their itch.io page (https://peachgardengames.itch.io/) and if you like what you see, let her know on twitter via @CatlingGun.

Marsh Attacks! Episode Three (5E D&D)

Mon, 24 Jan 2022 05:00:00 GMT

This is it, folks! The final episode of our Marsh Attacks! campaign! A huge thanks to Rich, Cory, and Jenna for sticking with the campaign through its conclusion and I hope you all had a blast! If you haven't heard session 0, 1, and 2 yet, I think they're worth going back for!

This will, in all likelihood, be the last time we play 5th edition for a while, truth be told. We like 5E but Wizards of the Coast doesn't need our help bringing attention to the game. We'll stick with indie games and their authors because there are so many amazing games out there that don't get the attention they deserve.

Like Lucha Libram! and Despite All Our Rage We Are Still Just Some Rats On Nic Cage, for example. Not that I'm biased...

The Tabula Initiative

Mon, 17 Jan 2022 05:00:00 GMT

After reviewing (https://podofblunders.com/2022/01/07/the-tabula-initiative/) Cloven Pine Games' "The Tabula Initiative" a few weeks ago, I knew I had to get it to the table. It's a great little game that's easy to teach, easy to run, and, as I hope you'll agree, lends itself to tell fun and engaging stories.

The story we ended up telling is not one featuring a heroic spy fighting against a corrupt system. Instead, Richard plays an absolute bastard. Enjoy!

Oh, and trigger warning. There are several allusions to harm to children throughout this episode. Nothing is ever graphically described or happening "on screen" but I want to give a heads up in case that sort of thing squigs you out.

If you like this episode, grab the game here: https://cloven-pine-games.itch.io/the-tabula-initiative

Hearthside Chat with Riley Passmore of Black Marble Games

Mon, 10 Jan 2022 05:00:00 GMT

You need to understand how much I love Riley's (@GamesMarble) Rhenge setting for 5E. Living statues. Animal folk called The Cloven. A whole new, intuitive suite of tools to make exploration fun and interesting. I mean, every 5E gamemaster should head to https://blackmarblegames.com/ after listening to our interview and support such fantastic work!

If you enjoy this interview half as much as I enjoy Riley's setting, this will be a record breaking episode!

For real though, it's a hell of a product and definitely needs more love and attention.

Mon, 27 Dec 2021 16:44:21 GMT

Richard and I took a little time off to be with our families for the holidays but we didn't want to skip our scheduled weekly release. What's a podcast to do?!

Why, release another episode of our Patreon-exclusive podcast Jumping the Street Sharks, of course! Please enjoy our chat about the buckwild 14th episode of the mid-90s greatest TV show and if you like it, consider heading to www.patreon.com/podofblunders for more content like this!

Christmas One Shot: Elf Hard

Mon, 20 Dec 2021 05:00:00 GMT

Ho Ho How's about a wonderfully weird Christmas episode? Richard, Nate, Liam, and Ryan played a Christmas hack of Lasers & Feelings by John Harper, only this time our two stats were Naughty and Nice! Nate even wrote a custom poem for the occasion and Liam...Liam'd extra hard on this one. My Girlfriend Has Turned Into A Car (And We're Escaping This City)

Mon, 13 Dec 2021 05:00:00 GMT

The only thing that compares to Richards hate of anime is his love for me, which is why he agreed to play Starshine Scribbles' My Girlfriend Has Turned Into A Car (And We're Escaping This City). This game is based on a 15ish minute section of the late 90's anime The Adolescence of Utena and I really, really suggest you check it out. It's fairly easy to find on the internet - retrocrush has it, though I don't know about the legality of it all so find it there at your own risk - but if you do watch it, you can skip to around the 1 hour mark and watch the next 15 minutes or so. It's...a whole thing and my life has been forever changed by watching it. Changed for the better? Only time will tell.

To find a copy of this game (or one of Star's other amazing games), head to their itch.io page: https://starshinescribbles.itch.io/

Hearthside Chat with Starshine Scribbles

Mon, 06 Dec 2021 05:00:00 GMT

Star's (@Starshinescrib) easily one of my favorite indie designers out there. One look at their itch.io page (https://starshinescribbles.itch.io/) and you can understand why. Star is brilliantly inventive and you'd be hard pressed to find a designer who is better at fitting mechanics to theme.

In case I wasn't laying it on thick enough, I'm a big fan.

I hope you enjoy this interview and make sure you tune in next week for our actual play of Star's game "My Girlfriend Turned Into a Car and We're Escaping this City".

The Inn Between: The Newlywed Game (sorta)

Mon, 22 Nov 2021 05:00:00 GMT

You've listened to us for almost a year now, but how well do you know us? And how well do we know each other? Can you ever truly know another person or are we forever alone in a cosmic sense, never really knowing our closest loved ones and confidants regardless of how much we try?

Sorry, that got a little...big.

Anyway! Richard and Nate take turns asking each other personal questions to see who knows the other one best and you can be the judge on who's the ultimate friend. Enjoy!

Wickies!

Mon, 08 Nov 2021 05:00:00 GMT

HARK! This week, Richard & Nate dusted off their Jenga tower and played Wickies, a two-player horror RPG about lighthouse keepers! Anyone who's seen the amazing movie will find our tale familiar but LEGALLY DISTINCT from that work. You hear that, Robert Eggers? We're untouchable.

Oh, and this is the first episode Richard and Nate ever recorded while in the same room! The energy was different and I think you'll enjoy it.

Halloween Spooktacular! The Final Girl

Mon, 25 Oct 2021 04:00:00 GMT

Hello boils and ghouls! And...enboos? Like enbies but...spooky. Get it? Okay well I tried.

I know we put out a bunch of horror-related content, but that's just because we like to keep the spookiest season in our hearts all year round. This is a special Halloween episode that was a TON of fun to record and I hope will be just as fun to listen to.

The Final Girl is one of my all-time favorite RPGs and I'm glad we found a way to make it work playing from a distance. Special thanks to @DonoghMC for suggesting using a Google Sheet to track characters and playingcards.io! It worked like a charm.

If you're looking to snag your own copy of The Final Girl, head on over to DriveThruRPG- https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/182628/The-Final-Girl. We've played this game four or five times now and it's never disappointed.

Hearthside Chat with CTRL Group Podcast

Mon, 18 Oct 2021 04:00:00 GMT

I am SOOO hesitant to publish this episode because the CTRL Group folks are guaranteed to charm you and steal you away from us and, frankly, our egos can't take that sort of hit. Hopefully there'll be enough room in your heart for both our podcasts! Also, sorry if there's any audio wonkiness. Zoom did its best Skynet impression and tried to kill our episode but we prevailed! Mostly!

Moving on! You can find more information about the CTRL Group Podcast on their website (https://ctrlgrouppod.com/episodes/) and can check out their games on https://mstrocks.itch.io/ and https://ctrlgroup.itch.io/. And you should! Special shout out to Power Couple - it's awesome.

Minigame Mixtape Vol 1: The Guy Economy & Cheat Your Own Adventure

Mon, 27 Sep 2021 04:00:00 GMT

Two games! One episode! Zero GMs! This week, Nate, Richard, CJ, and Liam played two fantastic, ridiculously fun GM-less TTRPGs.

In "The Guy Economy", our quest to put together a home theater results in death and destruction on a massive scale.

Weirdly enough, our "Cheat Your Own Adventure" in The Crypts of Doom was benign in comparison! Plus we got to beat up a nazi skeleton, which is always cool.

If you want to get your own copies of these games, here are the links:

BONUS! Jumping the Street Sharks: Shark Fight ft. Evan Skolnick!

Thu, 23 Sep 2021 14:07:00 GMT

Thanks to the amazing generosity of our Patrons, we're proud to share our most recent Jumping the Street Sharks episode with everyone! We couldn't do this without them and we're so moved that they believe in our show enough to share this Patreon exclusive with you.

Even more exciting is that Evan Skolnick, the writer for the Street Sharks comics in the 90s (and like...everything else you've ever loved) came on the show for an interview! Evan's incredibly career is just insane. He's worked on Marvel properties, Star Wars, Cuphead, just to name a few things, and now is a professor at the University of Silicon Valley. And now he's finally achieved his boyhood dream of coming on our dumb podcast! CONGRATS, Evan!!

If you want to jump right to Evan's interview, it starts at 39:07 but hey, don't deny yourself the joy of hearing two cool dudes talk about a nonsense kids show from 1994. You've earned it.

If you want to become one of our fantastic Patrons, please head to www.patreon.com/podofblunders. You'll get even more Street Shark content, free beta copies of any games we create, and a bunch of other great perks.

Yeah, we covered a lot of ground here but at this point I hope you expect nothing less from our little slice of the podcast universe!

Mon, 13 Sep 2021 04:00:00 GMT

It's here! It's finally here! I am SO HAPPY to present to you the first episode of our 5E campaign! I mean, I know I'm biased but I really think you'll enjoy this. It's got all things that are good. Tree despots. Bee people. Sod monsters. Toilet acrobatics. The works!

Oh, and Jenna is playing a melliferan which is a homebrew race of bee folk available via our blog. Check it out here: https://podofblunders.com/2021/01/08/melliferans-bee-folk/

And if you missed it/want some background info on the world, check out our session zero episode last week where Nate, Jenna, Richard, and Cory got together to flesh out the world. I'd include a link but just like...scroll down a bit and you'll see last week's episode. You got this.

Marsh Attacks! Session Zero (5E D&D)

Mon, 06 Sep 2021 04:00:00 GMT

We're kicking off our shiny new 5E campaign with some world building! I let my players create the world they want to play in and, well, they created a frigid swamp hellscape. So that's cool.

In this episode, you'll hear us using the CATS method to discuss what sort of game we want to play, which is something I suggest every group does before starting a new campaign. After that, we go into a question and answer session to flesh out the player's starting location and de facto home base. I consider myself a pretty creative guy but yeah, the players really understood the task and ran with it full speed. I'll toss the list of questions I asked on www.podofblunders.com if anyone would like to use them for their own session zero.

Ian Yusem contributed to Dissident Whispers and has made wonderfully horrific Mothership adventures as well. You can find links to all of Ian's stuff via Exalted Funeral and itch.io. The Inn Between: Designing Adventures with Magic: The Gathering Cards

Mon, 23 Aug 2021 04:00:00 GMT

So Magic: The Gathering recently put out a Dungeons & Dragons set so I thought it'd be the perfect opportunity to try making adventures using booster packs. I wasn't sure if it'd actually work, especially given the additional restrictions we put on ourselves but...SPOILERS...it worked great!

Oh, and if you want to look up the cards as we talk about them, here's where you can do that.

So go to your FLGS, rip open a couple packs of cards, and get ready to be surprised how the restraints push your creativity in surprising directions!

Okay well I'm no Weird Al but you know who is? Eric Parker of Maps 'N' Quests! Well like...he's the Weird Al of maps. I mean, they're not parody maps or anything. They're just really good. So I guess I should say that Eric is to maps what Weird Al is to parody.

There. Cleared that up.

Lumberlands/Into the Odd - The Mystery of the Murderous Maplemancer (Part Two)

Mon, 09 Aug 2021 04:00:00 GMT

Well hey there! Did you come back for episode two because of the terrible puns or in spite of them? Honestly, I couldn't tell you which is worse but regardless, I'm sure glad you're here! I hope you enjoy the conclusion to our trek through the Lumberlands! Thanks again to Erik Jensen for making such a wonderful setting and for spending time with us during our Hearthside Chat. Also, I'd like to give a special thanks to Lost Pages for publishing such amazing things like Lumberlands and Into the Odd. Oh and hey...do me a solid and don't tell Ryan I got one of the rules wrong and that he should've never had to roll to hit. I don't think he'd forgive me for that...

Lumberlands/Into the Odd - The Mystery of the Murderous Maplemancer (Part One)

Mon, 02 Aug 2021 04:00:00 GMT

Grab your axes and watch your asses, it's Lumberlands time! After sitting down with Erik Jensen for last week's episode, the boys and I just had to strap on our finest puce and chartreuse gingham and take our gunkeys to the nearest lumber camp. I promise if you listen to last week's episode, that sentence mostly makes sense. Anyway! We settled on using Into the Odd for this game because both it and Lumberlands are published by Lost Pages. Also, like Lumberlands, it rocks. It's such a simple system that feels like an OSR game with some wonderfully innovative twists. Definitely worth checking out! Oh, and despite the simple rules...I got one wrong. I mean, I uh...introduced a house rule! RAW, players don't need to roll to attack. Instead, they just do their damage to the opponent minus the opponent's armor. I had the players roll because I like the randomness and not at all because I spaced it.

Regardless, I love how this episode came out and I can't wait to bring you the conclusion next week. Enjoy!!

Hearthside Chat with Erik Jensen, Creator of Lumberlands

Mon, 26 Jul 2021 04:00:00 GMT

If you count the number of rings in a tree, you'll know how old it is. If you count the number of puns in Lumberlands, you'd not get much else done with your day. We sat down with the mind behind this weird and wonderful setting and learned a lot about him, it, and ourselves. Okay the only thing we learned about ourselves is that we really wanted to play in Erik's pine-scented sandbox...and so we did! Using Into the Odd, our motliest crew traversed the tree-ridden lands and...yeah it got weird. But you'll have to wait for next week to hear all about that!

In the meantime, pour yourself a cup of syrup, snuggle into your warmest flannel, and fill your ears (and heart?) with Lumberlands! Oh, and if you want more Erik's special brand of weird, look no further than his fantastic Wampus Country blog.

That episode will becoming out next week but, in the meantime, I hope you enjoy our conversation about NOVA, LIGHT, and a slew of other fantastic games.

One Shot: Fight Bears, Cough Blood, Kill God

Mon, 14 Jun 2021 04:00:00 GMT

Richard and Nate decided to ignore the millions upon millions of fans begging to come on the show and rocked this episode on their own.

Hearthside Chat with Heather Flowers of Extreme Meatpunks Forever

Mon, 07 Jun 2021 04:00:00 GMT

How do you interview a person who does not exist? This is not rhetorical. We have it on good authority that Heather Flowers (@HTHRFLWRS) does not exist and yet our good friend Eric Crumrine (@ECrumrine) managed to finagle an interview with them. It boggles the mind.

The tabletop version of Heather's LUDICROUSLY COOL game, Extreme Meatpunks Forever, is on Kickstarter right now and, as previously mentioned, is LUDICROUSLY COOL. You can be a queer person in a meat mech and punch neo-n*zis! It's true! Also, you can do many of those things in real life so don't let your dreams be dreams!

Sure, you could check out the PWYW quickstart here...but you could also get the full version of the game for yourself here. Treat yourself.

Once again, I need to give a special thanks to our friend and occasional guest host Eric Crumrine for interviewing our guest this week. If you want to hear more from Eric, you should check out his Twitch streams - https://www.twitch.tv/falconwizard. You can also message him on Twitter @ECrumrine in case you want him to be a guest on YOUR podcast or game or stream. It's all the rage these days.

Mothership: The Haunting of Ypsilon 14 (Part 2)

Mon, 31 May 2021 04:00:00 GMT

Shoutout to my cohost/editor Richard for getting this episode edited while recovering from surgery! You're the best!

I hope you enjoy the conclusion to our Mothership actual play with players Jenna, Ryan, and Richard. Also, as we mentioned last week, Warden Nate totally biffed one of the rules. You don't roll for stress after each failed roll, only after each failed save. Unless Nate was just playing on hardcore mode and didn't tell anyone. I guess we'll never know...

Anyway!

If you want a copy of Mothership and/or this specific adventure, head on over to Tuesday Knight Games! We don't get a referral kickback or anything, we just think they're neat!

I feel like I say this a lot but I want to give a special thanks to our friend and occasional guest host Eric Crumrine for providing his vocal talents on this week's episode. Though the players didn't find the message he recorded for us, we made sure to include it here anyway. If you want to hear more from Eric, you should check out his Twitch streams - https://www.twitch.tv/falconwizard. You can also message him on Twitter @ECrumrine in case you want him to be a guest on YOUR podcast or game or stream. It's all the rage these days.

Mothership: The Haunting of Ypsilon 14 (Part 1)

Mon, 24 May 2021 04:00:00 GMT

Captains Log, Stardate 98989.62: Anyone else tired of optimistic and hopeful SciFi futures presented in so much of our media? Well don't worry, we've got the cure for that! This week Jenna, Ryan, Rich, and Nate are proud to present the first half of our Mothership actual play. Also, Nate totally biffed one of the rules.

And again, a huge thanks to Zach Walsh of Scheduled for Launch for his fantastic guest voice acting work. If you want to hear more of Zach's voice (and who wouldn't) be sure to check out the link above to listen to his indie game interview podcast!

Mon, 17 May 2021 04:00:00 GMT

Hearthside Chat with Horror Author & Podcaster Charles Davenport

Thu, 01 Apr 2021 04:00:00 GMT

What's up Thomas Jane fans!? Richard and Nate sat down with horror author Charlie Davenport to discuss Thomas Jane's influence on his writing and on the horror genre as a whole. Apparently Charlie somehow missed he was to be a guest on the internet's most popular Thomas Jane fancast but that's really no one's fault but his own, right?

You could listen to Charlie's wonderful story Big Man - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSF4gHWFGb8&t=26s but, honestly, if you're looking for horror entertainment, look no further than The Mist or 1922 starring Thomas Jane. Those were awesome.

Find more of Charlie's work here - https://t.co/ranvThS75k?amp=1 or, instead, keep up with the ever-evolving release schedule for the world's most talented actor Thomas Jane: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005048/

Mon, 29 Mar 2021 04:00:00 GMT

But what is Knave, you ask? Don't worry, we reviewed it earlier! https://podofblunders.com/2021/02/23/one-minute-game-review-knave/

Hearthside Chat with Game Designer Skeeter Green

Wed, 10 Mar 2021 05:00:00 GMT

Through the power of the internet, Nate sat down with longtime game designer Skeeter Green to talk about his current Kickstarter campaign, Cryptocodex. The book fuckin' slaps, and the Kickstarter is already fully funded so there's no worries there. If you want to show your support for a game designer who absolutely puts his heart into his work and snag yourself a copy of this truly bizarre and beautiful book, the Kickstarter is live until March 16th, 2021 so don't sleep on this!

The Inn Between - Creating a Session with the 5-Room Dungeon Method

Mon, 08 Mar 2021 05:00:00 GMT

Richard and Nate reach deep into their knowledge of 1980's horror movies to create a one shot using Johnn Four's excellent 5-Room Dungeon method. Nate wanted to make a nice, simple D&D dungeon but nooOOOooo, Richard had to go and prove the method works outside its intended genre like some kind of jerk.

Check out the 5-Room Dungeon method for yourself - it's an incredible tool for the busy DM: https://www.roleplayingtips.com/5-room-dungeons/

Hearthside Chat with Game Designer Jordan Palmer

Wed, 03 Mar 2021 13:47:46 GMT

Nate sat down with Jordan Palmer to talk about his latest hilarious game on Kickstarter, Our God is Dead. Jordan is no stranger to successful Kickstarter campaigns and his most recent effort is already fully funded. We also discuss his overall game design ethos, if "fun" is always the goal of a good RPG, as well as the absurdity of hit points. We covered a lot of ground in half an hour!
