John Carden, Assistant Professor of Musical Theatre

John Carden joined the Department of Theatre & Film in the fall 2022 semester as our Assistant Professor of Musical Theatre. John comes to us by way of New York — among other places, national and international — with a background in both opera and musical theatre, the latter of which he both performs, composes, and teaches.

Donna Buckley's Study Abroad in London

Today we are talking with Donna Buckley, who is Instructional Associate Professor of Costume Technology, about the very exciting study abroad program she will be leading over May Intersession next year. It’s called “Exploring the Performance and Design of London Theatre,” is basically two weeks jam-packed with workshops, museum visits, performances, and other experiences. It’s open to students in any major and any year, and as we’ll hear from Donna while it is theatre-focused, it’s going to be a great program for students in many disciplines.

Elena Ontiveros, Performer, Teacher, and Makeup Artist, BFA 2018

Elena Ontiveros graduated from our program in 2018 with a BFA in Musical Theatre and a BA in Music. Since then, she's built a very interesting caree—a mix of performance (both on stage and onscreen), teaching, and makeup design, all using a variety of skills she acquired during her time at UM. Lauren Ray, Educator and MTA Board Member, Class of 2009 - Part II

Lauren Ray graduated from our program in 2009 with a B.A. Theatre Arts and French, and she's now a teacher and speech and debate coach at Northwest Rankin High School in Flowood, MS. She also serves on the board of the Mississippi Theater Association as the Youth Co-Vice Chair for Individual Events. 

Lauren and I had a lot to talk about, so our conversation was spread across two episodes. Christina Tompkins, BFA Musical Theatre, Class of 2009

Christina Tompkins graduated from our BFA Musical Theatre program in 2009, and since then has been on stages across the country—most recently as part of a national tour of "The Sound of Music."  She was an offstage swing for that tour, and over the course of two-plus years got to perform every track in the show.

We talked about how this native New Yorker ended up at the University of Mississippi (and why she stayed), the role of swing and the skills needed to perform so many different parts on-demand, and why those skills also make her a good company manager. She also shared some advice for theatre hopefuls and let us in on what she has coming up with another alum from her graduating class.

Madison Morrow, B.A. Theatre Arts, B.B.A. General Business, Class of 2020

Madison Morrow graduated from the University of Mississippi with dual degrees in theatre arts and general business—in the spring of 2020, when the global COVID-19 pandemic was upending everyone's post-graduation plans. Fast forward a little over a year, and Madison has just finished the first year of a master's program in arts management at Carnegie Mellon University.

During this episode, Madison mentioned what a great time she had as assistant director for Chicago. Elizabeth Burrow, BFA, Class of 2021

In this episode we talked with another recent graduate, Elizabeth Burrow of Pascagoula, who just received her BFA in Theatre Arts with an emphasis in Musical Theatre. Elizabeth's story is pretty interesting because it opens with a twist: She had originally come to college with a totally different career path firmly in mind, but within a semester had decided to pursue her love of performing.

Over the course of the episode, we discussed a couple of things that might benefit from further explanation.

First, Ole Miss Student Dance or OMSD is, like it sounds, a student-run dance organization that students from every part of the university (and of course, many from our department) participate in. We have many dance classes within our program, and this is a way for dancers to be even more involved. 

Also, Elizabeth talked about her experience choreographing our spring production of Urinetown, and there were references to it being "virtual" and "remote." In order to stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, rehearsals were conducted distanced and with masks, and then for the actual performance, each actor was filmed individually so they could perform without masks, and everything was edited together to make it appear as if they were all sharing the stage. The Poetic Body with Lauren Bone Noble, Assistant Professor of Movement for the Actor

Lauren Bone Noble joined our faculty in the fall of 2020 as Assistant Professor of Movement for the Actor, and in that semester spearheaded the creation of a brand new work of devised theatre called Near/Far, which was developed almost entirely by students, produced remotely, and screened online. In this episode, we'll talk about that, some of her other recent works, her background as an actor who has appeared both on television and Broadway, and we'll learn how she got where she is today.

Wesley McClain, Automation Supervisor for Cirque du Soleil

Wesley McClain graduated from the University of Mississippi Department of Theatre & Film with a BFA in Theatre Arts, emphasis in Design and Technology and now works as the Automation Department Supervisor for the long-running Cirque du Soleil show "O." It's safe to say that if any component of the production moves on its own, Wes is responsible for making sure it happens how and when its supposed to.

Comedian, Actor, and Writer Jay Jurden Pt. 2

Hello everyone and welcome back to Stage and Screen. I'm your host Katherine Stewart and today we have Part 2 of my interview with alum Jay Jurden. Jay is what you might call a triple threat, but of a slightly different sort. He's a comedian, actor, and writer whose first stand-up album, which was released last year, debuted on iTunes at number one. He's on the HBO show High Maintenance and his writing has appeared in The New Yorker, Mcsweeney's Internet Tendency, and Teen Vogue.

When we left off with Jay on the last episode, his career was just about to blow up. And by blow up I mean he was about to be offered in appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. In this episode, Jay talks about that, and it's a great story, and he shares his thoughts on comedy, fame, success and more. So stay tuned and we'll let Jay take it away.

Comedian, Actor, and Writer Jay Jurden Pt. 1

On this episode of Stage & Screen, we're visiting with alum and comedian Jay Jurden. He graduated from our program in 2012 with a BFA in acting, and is now living and working in New York. In addition to doing stand-up comedy, which he has performed for Comedy Central, on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and on his album Jay Jurden, Y’all, which debuted at #1 on iTunes, Jay is also an actor, most recently on the HBO show High Maintenance, and a writer whose work has appeared in The New Yorker, McSweeney's Internet Tendency, and Teen Vogue.
