Murder at the Job Fair for Dicks - Episode 106

Thu, 20 Jun 2024 04:39:00 -0700

Painting of a lifeless young man in a yellow jacket lying face down on reddish brown floor. The man has brown hair. Kneeling next to him is a man in a blue suit, his head outside the frame of the picture. He touches the neck or ear of the man on the ground. The painting is signed Saunders in the lower left corner.

Which detective was murdered at the job fair for dicks? How many dicks will it take to detect who did it? Do you have any experience gunning down striking miners or railroad workers? Listen to find out!

Murder at the Job Fair for Dicks, episode 106 of This Gun in My Hand, was headhunted by Rob Northrup. This episode and all others are available on Youtube with automatically-generated closed captions of dialog. Visit http://ThisGuninMyHand.blogspot.com for credits, show notes, archives, and to buy my books, such as Little Heist in the Big Woods and Other Revisionist Atrocities. What do I use to practice my skills of detection? This Gun in My Hand!

Show Notes:
1. One of my favorite old time radio shows is Pete Kelly’s Blues, a 1951 series starring Jack Webb as a hardboiled cornet player in a Dixieland jazz band who solves mysteries in 1920s Kansas City. Only six episodes are thought to survive.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pete_Kelly%27s_Blues_(radio_series)

2. Eccentric Houseboat Detective was inspired by John D. MacDonald’s character Travis McGee in The Deep Blue Good-by. Not inspired by eccentric sailboat detectives Sonny Crocket or Quincy or Adam West’s character in The Girl Who Knew Too Much (1969).

3. Anachronism: the Knights Templar were arrested for heresy by order of King Phillip IV on October 12th, 1307, but you can tell this episode is set in summer because no one is described as wearing coats as they would be in Parabellum City in October.

Credits:
The opening music clip was from The Sun Sets at Dawn (1950); the ad music for Eccentric Houseboat Detective was from D.O.A. (1949); and the closing music was from Killer Bait (1949), all films in the public domain. Most of the music and sound effects used in the episode are modified or incomplete versions of the originals.

Spoonful of Lugers - Episode 105

Tue, 28 May 2024 05:08:00 -0700

Photo collage of seven Luger pistols resting on a huge spoon. Caption at top says "SPOONFUL OF LUGERS" and at bottom HTTP://THISGUNINMYHAND.BLOGSPOT.COM..

Can Falk or Castro use their unique crime-fighting skills to punish those who carry out massacres? Is this topic too heavy for a punny old time radio parody? And where are the Lugers?! Listen to find out!

Spoonful of Lugers, episode 105 of This Gun in My Hand, was seamlessly worked into a plot by Rob Northrup. This episode and all others are available on Youtube with automatically-generated closed captions of dialog. Visit http://ThisGuninMyHand.blogspot.com for credits, show notes, archives, and to buy my books, such as Little Heist in the Big Woods and Other Revisionist Atrocities. What narrative technique helps me sneak serious topics into wacky adventure stories? This Gun in My Hand!

Also read A People’s History of the United States by Howard Zinn, and the novel A Moment in the Sun by John Sayles.

2. The bird you hear in almost every movie set in the jungles of Africa, Central America or South America is the Kookaburra, which is actually native to Australia and New Guinea. According to Wikipedia, “The call is heard in [Tarzan and the Green Goddess (1938) and] The Wizard of Oz (1939), The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948), Swiss Family Robinson (1960), Cape Fear (1962), The Lost World: Jurassic Park, and other films.”

Watching the Defectives - Episode 104

Mon, 13 May 2024 04:56:00 -0700

Comic book drawing of a brown, souped-up hotrod tipping sideways on two wheels with dirt and debris flying behind it. The passenger has an arm raised as if expecting to crash, with long yellow hair or possibly the ends of a scarf trailing behind them.

Can Falk steer rookies in the world of crime down the path of justice? Will he be forced off the road of crime-fighting by a spindly motorized bicycle? What’s that smell? Listen to find out!

Violent Vacation with Peruvian Guns - Episode 103

Sun, 28 Apr 2024 06:16:00 -0700

Painting of the profile of a smiling man with short blond hair, outdoors, his right hand holding a dark gray fedora in front of him at about eye level. He wears a white shirt, black tie, possibly a denim coat and apron. The thumb of his left hand is in his suspenders. A folded newspaper in his coat pocket has the headline "THE HIGH HAT STRIKES." Cloudy blue skies and a trainyard can be seen in the background.
Falk walks close to the edge of crass commercialism, then gets pushed over the line. Do you have hat-related powers? Did someone steal your hat when you were young? Does it have something to do with drumming? Listen to find out!

Violent Vacation with Peruvian Guns, episode 103 of This Gun in My Hand, was crocheted by Rob Northrup. This episode and all others are available on Youtube with automatically-generated closed captions of dialog. Visit http://ThisGuninMyHand.blogspot.com for credits, show notes, archives, and to buy my books, such as Little Heist in the Big Woods and Other Revisionist Atrocities. What keeps my ears warm? Show Notes:
1. Violent Vacation with Peruvian Nuns was a tape released by the UK skate/thrash band The Stupids in 1986. In the village where I grew up (literally, legally a “village”), I was not on the cutting edge of knowledge about hardcore punk. The only radio stations within range were top 40, oldies or country, except for a freeform college radio station from Ann Arbor. When my family took a month long road trip in maybe summer 1988, we stopped a few days in San Diego. I might have passed over this tape at the swap meet, never heard of The Stupids before, but the cover had a cartoon of a twitching guy in a wheelchair by Don Martin. Great music, problematic pseudonyms and album titles, probably problematic lyrics but who can understand what Brits are singing? And I bet they used the cartoon without paying Don Martin or Mad Magazine. Rascals!

Fievel Getcha Ten - Episode 102

Wed, 17 Apr 2024 11:57:00 -0700

Easy Money magazine cover. Painting of a smiling blond woman in a slinky red dress, bald man with a visor examining a dollar bill, a shady looking man in a bowler hat with a cigarette in his mouth and a slip of paper in his hat band. All of them inside the shape of a dollar sign with dice and cards around them, on a black background.

A boy stumbles into the world of vice, from pennies to billiards to pinball. Will Falk rescue him in time? Why couldn't you become a jazz singer? Listen to find out!

Fievel Getcha Ten, episode 102 of This Gun in My Hand, was diced and pinned by Rob Northrup. World of Whispers - Episode 101

Fri, 5 Apr 2024 06:15:00 -0700

Painted image of a globe with Africa, Europe and Asia pushed together. "World of Whispers" written in white script letters over the globe. From the four corners of the square image, chubby-cheeked cherubs blow visible gusts towards the center. In the background you can barely see a human figure holding the globe in its hands.

A noisy day at the park, when suddenly–it’s oh so quiet. Gunshots are muffled. Wrestling grunts are barely audible. Can Falk restore order to the soundscape? Why does that bearded guy’s costume include wings? Listen to find out!

World of Whispers, episode 101 of This Gun in My Hand, was breathed out by Rob Northrup. All episodes are available on Youtube with automatically-generated closed captions of dialog. Visit http://ThisGuninMyHand.blogspot.com for credits, show notes, archives, and to buy my books, such as Little Heist in the Big Woods and Other Revisionist Atrocities. What keeps people quiet? This Gun in My Hand!

Show Notes:
1. One of my earliest radio plays was a group project for Creative Writing class in high school, probably 1989. My friends Jeff, Julian and I wrote a script parodying Star Trek, cobbled together from jokes we had probably absorbed reading Mad Magazine. Only five or ten minutes long, we recorded it on tape and played it in class. I’m not sure why Mr. Groesser apologized to the class afterwards, maybe because of the bad language like “Damn!” or “Bloody Hell!” At one point Jeff did the voice of a vendor at a baseball game, calling out, “peaNUTS! Popcorn!” maybe to hint at how large the ship is. I tried to recreate his delivery here. When Julian’s girlfriend heard the tape, she asked what girl we had cast for the voice of Uhura. She wouldn’t believe I had done it. No effects software to raise the pitch, I did it all in the delivery.

2. Whispering Wind and Blessed Day (aka Muckbang, aka Peatboom) first appeared in episode 60, “Hush, Sweet Zildjian.”

Parabellum City Passes a C-Note - Episode 100

Sun, 17 Mar 2024 05:55:00 -0700

Comic-book cover depicting a laughing jester decked out in purple with a domino mask, holding an oversized skeleton key with a small skull at the top. He stands in front of a door and key hole. Vertically along the left side of the image, it says "KEY COMICS NO. 3."

Celebrating 100 years of Parabellum City, The City That Never Misses! Will Falk survive? Will Petra? Was your lack of a nickel the final nail in her coffin? Listen to find out!

Parabellum City Passes a C-Note, episode 100 of This Gun in My Hand, was founded and passed by Rob Northrup -- who would like to remind you that This Gun in My Hand is a work of fiction. Any resemblance to actual events, places, financial instruments or persons, living or dead, is entirely coincidental. This episode and all others are available on Youtube with automatically-generated closed captions of dialogue. Visit http://ThisGuninMyHand.blogspot.com for credits, show notes, archives, information on how to subscribe, and to buy my books, such as Little Heist in the Big Woods and Other Revisionist Atrocities. What will I use to get a message to the bank? This Gun in My Hand!

Show Notes:
1. The history of Parabellum City is inspired by the founding of Jacksonberg, aka Jacksonopolis, aka Jackson, aka Jacktown, aka Rose City, aka Prison City. They’re not meant to be the same. Parabellum City is bigger. Jackson is not what I’d call a toddlin’-class town.

2. Fruity ad inspired by “He Was Her Man” (Merrie Melodies, 1936). Content warning: the domestic violence they got away with in 1936 cartoons is unreal.
https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x60u9yo

3. Wikipedia says “In some cities in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany, the key to the city is given to the so-called 'prins carnaval' who leads the carnivals which take place the week prior to Septuagesima.”

Rats in a Cage Match - Episode 99

Sun, 25 Feb 2024 07:49:00 -0800

Comic book style line art of a man and woman facing off in wrestling stances inside the ropes of a wrestling ring. The two figures are mostly in shadow. The background is yellow. The heads of audience members are visible in the lower foreground of the picture.

Can Falk pin the corrupt boss of Parabellum City’s professional wrestling organization? Why is the crowd so quiet? Do frogs really stay in a pot of water if you turn up the heat gradually? Listen to find out!

Rats in a Cage Match, episode 99 of This Gun in My Hand, was slammed into a turnbuckle by Rob Northrup. How do I pin a person to the mat? With This Gun in My Hand!

Show Notes:
1. I was going to insert a sample of “Hey Murgatroyd, let’s go-o-oo!” from “Jam On It” by Newcleus, but I couldn’t isolate the vocal from the not-very-1939 music.
2. Falk might be thinking of the Wallace Beery wrestling picture Flesh (1932).
3. Don Knotts would count as an animal shapeshifter in The Incredible Mister Limpet (1964), right? I watched the full movie last night because that’s the level of commitment I bring to researching this show.
4. Regina slips up when she says, “I already said the episode title…” proving that she is really Petra! but Falk misses it.

Credits:
The opening music clip was from The Sun Sets at Dawn (1950). The music clip during the commercial was from The Scar (1948, aka Hollow Triumph). The closing music was from Killer Bait (1949), all three films in the public domain. Most of the music and sound effects used in the episode are modified or incomplete versions of the originals.

Do Androids Dream of His Girl Friday? - Episode 98

Sat, 10 Feb 2024 06:05:00 -0800

Modified detail of a black and white promotional photo by A. L. Schafer for the 1940 film His Girl Friday showing Cary Grant, Rosalind Russell and Ralph Bellamy sitting next to each other. Superimposed over Ralph Bellamy’s face is the robot from The Phantom Creeps (1939) from another promotional photo (photographer unknown).

What happens when Falk gets stuck in a screwball comedy? Can Falk weed out the humans from the androids? Do androids dream of His Girl Friday? Listen to find out!

Do Androids Dream of His Girl Friday? , episode 98 of This Gun in My Hand, was manufactured not by the Tyrell Corporation but by Rob Northrup, using dialogue from the 1940 public domain film His Girl Friday, which was adapted from the 1928 public domain play The Front Page. The part of Walter Burns was played by Cary Grant, with Rosalind Russell as Hildy Johnson and Ralph Bellamy as Bruce Baldwin. This episode and all others are available on Youtube with automatically-generated closed captions of dialog. Visit http://ThisGuninMyHand.blogspot.com for credits, show notes, archives, information on how to subscribe, and to buy my books, such as Little Heist in the Big Woods and Other Revisionist Atrocities. How do I survive a screwball comedy? With This Gun in My Hand!

Show Notes:
1. The 1940 film His Girl Friday was adapted from a 1928 stage play titled The Front Page, both in the public domain. Dialogue in this episode was taken from His Girl Friday. (Link below.) It’s excellent but has (CONTENT WARNING) the kind of racism and sexism you might expect in a 1940 film. There’s also a one hour Lux Radio Theater adaptation starring Fred MacMurray and Claudette Colbert; a Screen Guild Theater radio adaptation starring Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell squeezed down into a half hour; and an even more offensive, grittier 1970 film of The Front Page starring Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon. And there’s a 1931 film version of The Front Page which I have yet to watch.

Credits:
The opening music clip was from The Sun Sets at Dawn (1950), with transitional music from His Girl Friday (1940) and the closing music was from Killer Bait (1949), all films in the public domain. Most of the music and sound effects used in the episode are modified or incomplete versions of the originals.

The two women saying “pixielated” were from the Campbell Playhouse radio adaptation of “Mr. Deeds Goes to Town,” broadcast February 11, 1940, public domain.

How Did This Gun in My Hand Get Made - Episode 97

Thu, 1 Feb 2024 04:59:00 -0800

Painting: close up of Caucasian man's face with dark hair hanging over his forehead, a dark mustache, wearing a red domino mask. He leans towards an old microphone with the label "HDTGGM" over it. Four photos of men and women swirl around him.

We’re gonna ballyhoo some stinkeroos,
Shows as cheesy as Milwaukee.
We’re gonna box up the radio and ship it to Biloxi.
Hot Dog! This Guy’s Got Moxie!

Paul, June & Jason of the popular show HDTGGM try to answer the question: how did This Gun in My Hand get made?

How Did This Gun in My Hand Get Made, episode 97 of This Gun in My Hand, was ballyhooed by Rob Northrup. What tool did I use to make this? This Gun in My Hand!

Show Notes:
1. When Jason Manticore is introduced, the audience is not booing. They’re actually shouting, “Zoooo!” A manticore is a mythical creature. They love him so much, they want to keep him in a zoo.

2. The audio credits at the end of the first episode of This Gun in My Hand said that all the voices were by one person, but not everyone listens to the credits or reads the show notes, as you might be demonstrating if you’re not reading this.

3. The reviews that Paul claims to have found in radio magazines are actual reviews of this podcast posted on various websites. It was my wife in real life who said she liked the part where a female character punches me.

Merch and Destroy - Episode 96

Mon, 15 Jan 2024 08:43:00 -0800

A colorful ad for Stetson fedoras. The shoulders and heads of five men in various suits and ties, one in a turtleneck, one with a pipe in his mouth. The caption in the center says "Merch and Destroy."

Can Gary convince his client Falk to endorse a spin-off show and merchandise? Will they stop a misguided hero from broadcasting the formula for nuclear destruction? Does chili exist? Listen to find out!

Merch and Destroy, episode 96 of This Gun in My Hand, was parroted by Rob Northrup. This episode and all others are available on Youtube with automatically-generated closed captions of dialog. Visit http://ThisGuninMyHand.blogspot.com for credits, show notes, archives, information on how to subscribe, and to buy the only official merchandise for This Gun in My Hand: a short story collection called Little Heist in the Big Woods and Other Revisionist Atrocities by Rob Northrup. Plunge back through your memories to episode 53, in which Falk reads these stories while riding the bus. You can read the same stories he raved about. Only $2.99 in pdf format. Cheap! Not available in paper format until we get more demand for it, or any demand for it. Which item of clothing truly makes the hero? This Gun in My Hand!

Show Notes:
1. My teacher for the second half of first grade was named Mrs. Schiller, I think. And if you haven’t read any mysteries, thrillers, westerns or anything else by Loren Estleman, you’re missing out.
2. The Backdoor Pilot appeared in Episode 50, “The Shady Aviator.”

Credits:
The opening music was from The Sun Sets at Dawn (1950) and the closing music was from Killer Bait (1949), both films in the public domain. Most of the music and sound effects used in the episode are modified or incomplete versions of the originals.

Ad Space - Episode 95

Fri, 5 Jan 2024 11:15:00 -0800

Water-pressure rocket toy ad from 1950s comics surrounded by other small ads for squirrel monkeys, bike decals and Venus fly traps. A red plastic rocket swoops upwards from a circle of children who launched it. Captioned "JET ROCKET, ZOOMS 300 FEET."

Will Falk prevent scandal and sabotage of the United States Rocketry Program? Does his friend Jimmy seem familiar? Is chili a myth? Listen to find out!

Ad Space, episode 95 of This Gun in My Hand, was advertised and spaced by Rob Northrup. This episode and all others are available on Youtube with automatically-generated closed captions of dialog. Show Notes:
1. Anachronism: Umberto Eco was seven years old in 1939, the time this story is set.

Credits:
The opening and middle transitional music clips were from The Sun Sets at Dawn (1950), with more music from The Scar (aka Hollow Triumph, 1948) and the closing music was from Killer Bait (1949), all films in the public domain. Seduction of the Ignorant - Episode 94

Sun, 24 Dec 2023 12:43:00 -0800

Comic book line art. A man in blue or black leather pants, red kneehigh boots and red gloves. We see him only from the waist down. Two women have their arms wrapped around his legs. To the left, a woman in a blue dress with red hair. To the right, a blond looking angry with her arm around his knee. On the ground just in front of him lies a brunette in a burnt orange V-neck blouse reaching up towards him.Falk wishes they would leave him be.
He first must vanquish seductresses three.
Will they charm our brave hero?
You’ve heard him before; you already know.
Listen anyway to find out!

Seduction of the Ignorant, episode 94 of This Gun in My Hand, was loved up and turned into a horny toad by Rob Northrup. My love for who is way out of line? This Gun in My Hand!

Show Notes:
1. Depending which dictionary you look in, “impassionate” is a contronym that can mean passionate or dispassionate.

2. Anachronism: according to Vogue India, “Designers Salvatore Ferragamo, Roger Vivier and André Perugia have all been credited with inventing the stiletto [heel], sometime between 1948 and 1954.” As so often happens in Parabellum City, Sickubus is a little ahead of her time.
https://www.vogue.in/content/the-history-of-the-stiletto

3. Catch-2022 paraphrases the “snails and oysters” innuendo from the bath scene from Spartacus (1960), which no one in 1939 would recognize. In fact, the scene was censored from the original release and wasn’t widely available to the public until a restored version in 1991.

4. I learned a new word from Freesound dot org: “borborygmus,” growling or rumbling sound made as food, fluids or gas passes through the stomach or intestines. Plural, “borborygmi.”

Credits:
The opening music was from The Sun Sets at Dawn (1950), and the closing music was from Killer Bait (1949), both films in the public domain. Most of the music and sound effects used in the episode are modified or incomplete versions of the originals.

A Match Made in Heck's Pantry - Episode 93

Sat, 2 Dec 2023 13:19:00 -0800

Three views of the same design of matchbook on black background. Front view of matchbook is red background with black lettering that reads "THIS GUN IN MY HAND." Back of matchbook has simple line drawing of dancing woman in red high heels, red panties and red bra (maybe?) with red hair. Green, red and transparent bubbles surround her. Open view of matchbook says "A Match Made in Heck's Pantry. For Reservations Phone WEbster 9-9452" inside.

Can Falk keep control of one cuffed criminal while following a trail of clues left by another crazed spree killer? Will someone make a love connection or is this episode title completely misleading? Listen to find out!

A Match Made in Heck’s Pantry, episode 93 of This Gun in My Hand, was ignited by Rob Northrup. Who’s the only smoker that gets close to me? This Gun in My Hand!

Show Notes:
1. This episode was partly inspired by Columbo and other cozy or formulaic murder mysteries, in which the culprit usually offers no resistance once the detective announces the final piece of evidence that proves they did it.

2. Public defenders were not provided across the country until Gideon v. Wainwright in 1963, but there were cities, counties and states that provided them as early as 1913.

3. My grandfather threatened to leave only one dollar in his will to any of his children who smoked, according to my dad. It worked! None of his kids smoked.

4. Pete Larsen came up with the names Patch Work and Pat Schwerk. Thanks, Pete!

Dungeon of Suspense - Episode 91

Wed, 25 Oct 2023 12:54:00 -0700

Drawing of a stone wall with iron bars set where a window might have been. Black and white.

Who shackled Falk in a dungeon cell? How did he get there? How will he escape? How can he fill ten minutes when there’s no one to banter with? Listen to find out!

Nursery Crimes - Episode 90

Tue, 10 Oct 2023 05:59:00 -0700

Comic book art of The Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe, her hands on hips, glowering at her children running around the giant, dilapidated shoe-home. Above her 1940s era US bombers and fighters move through bursts of flack.

Can Falk prevent a war between G.I. Jake and Castro? How many giant robots will be involved? Is knowing half the battle? Listen to find out!

Nursery Crimes, episode 90 of This Gun in My Hand, was transformed and rolled out by Rob Northrup. Parallel - Episode 89

Sat, 30 Sep 2023 15:57:00 -0700

A man with brown hair and mustache, brown coat, white shirt, black bow tie, brandishes a slim sword with knuckle guard.

How will Falk prevent the series of attacks happening simultaneously across Parabellum City, launched by Parallel, the most dangerous villain yet? Will it be a sporting fight or will Parallel show poor form? Listen to find out!

Parallel, episode 89 of This Gun in My Hand, was pulled together from disparate pieces by Rob Northrup. What ensures all the threads come together at the climax? This Gun in My Hand!

Show Notes:
1. It’s not a bad Sean Connery impression you’re hearing. It’s a bad Sebastian Gorka. Damn, I should have pronounced it “clark” instead of “clerk.”

2. This episode was inspired by movies and shows like The Phantom Menace, Return of the Jedi, Stranger Things Season 4 (part one?). Did they use this multi-setting climax technique in many or any movies in the 1930s?

Credits:
The opening music was from The Sun Sets at Dawn (1950), and the closing music was from Killer Bait (1949), both films in the public domain. Most of the music and sound effects used in the episode are modified or incomplete versions of the originals.

Plan of Attack - Episode 88

Sun, 17 Sep 2023 04:02:00 -0700

Painting of a man and woman standing in front of tall row of green filing cabinets, both facing the viewer of the image as if discovered in a crime. The frowning man on the left holds a pistol and wears a light brown suit and red tie. The red-haired woman is bending over slightly as she sets a match to a paper labeled "police record" with her photo on it. She wears a pink hat with red band, yellow blouse and white gloves.

Can two criminals on the run unite the crime families of Parabellum City with one shared purpose? Can Falk stop them in time? Should he? Listen to find out!

Plan of Attack, episode 88 of This Gun in My Hand, was officiated by Rob Northrup. “What can I get for you fellas?” This Gun in My Hand!

Show Notes:
1. There was no consensus or large group of credible scientists in the Twentieth Century claiming that another ice age was coming soon. It was always a fringe belief. I’m not using a handful of Erich Von Däniken-adjacent crackpots to argue against the overwhelming scientific consensus today about impending climate catastrophe. It’s just funny that the tiny minority of ice age warners were so wrong.

2. Fascinating article about honey bee sex. Did you know that male bees have no father, they do have a grandfather, they can be fathers to daughters, granddaughters and grandsons, but they can’t have sons?

https://wisconsinpollinators.com/Bee/BA_HoneyBeeSex.aspx

3. It kills me that The Green Hornet radio show had episodes about narrowly focused crimes like the vanity publishing racket, the citizenship papers racket, a protection racket that bombed fruit stands, a protection racket that bombed gas stations, and another protection racket for parking lot attendants.

4. When I was in elementary school in the late 1970s, there was a big fuss locally about banning kids from selling or possessing red hot cinnamon toothpicks in school. Basically toothpicks boiled in flavored water or syrup and you chew or suck on them like gum. I don’t remember if the danger was that some kids were allergic or poking themselves or each other or swallowing them, or just that students selling things was “disruptive” unless it was girl scout cookies or book sales.

5. In the Commodore 64 version of the game Castle Wolfenstein, you could find useful items on dead guards or in supply chests including bullets, grenades, keys, uniforms, sauerkraut and Liebfraumilch.

Credits:
The opening music clip was from The Sun Sets at Dawn (1950), and the closing music was from Killer Bait (1949), both films in the public domain. Most of the music and sound effects used in the episode are modified or incomplete versions of the originals.

Machine gun fire sound taken from the public domain film Commandos (1968).

Löwenbräu jingle (“Here’s to Good Friends”) written by Bill Backer. I’m hoping companies aren’t too strict about copyright for 45 year old commercials. Parody counts as “fair use,” right?

Trailmaster - Episode 87

Fri, 1 Sep 2023 12:38:00 -0700

Rocks, logs, bushes and leaves surround the edges of the picture. Five figures approach from a distance. The first two appear to be men in beige safari outfits with wide-brimmed hats. The dark silhouettes of three others might include a woman.

Will Falk be mastered by The Trailmaster? Which man leaves a longer trail of bodies? What does “GORP” stand for? Listen to find out!

Trailmaster, episode 87 of This Gun in My Hand, was blazed and trailed by Rob Northrup. What heroic nickname have I given to my most devoted henchman? This Gun in My Hand!

Show Notes:
1. “PR Monster” aka “Preezy” is an artist whose works and tags can be seen in at least two cities in southern Michigan, probably more. The audio and text of This Gun in My Hand are works of fiction. Any references to historical events, real people, or real places are used fictitiously. Other names, characters, places and events are products of the author's imagination, and any resemblance to actual events or places or persons, living or dead, is entirely coincidental.

2. The bouncy, chipper music used in the commercial is titled “BULLETS AND BAYONETS” by John Philip Sousa.

Sepia-toned black and white photo of silent film actress Charlotte Rich in a bathing suit posed as if she's cranking a movie camera. From page 1 of the February 11, 1922 National Police Gazette.

Who erased Falk’s memory? Will it be restored with help from a mystical radio hostess and a bit player from silent movies? Why don’t they serve mushroom anchovy pizza on the bus anymore? Listen to find out!

You Must Remember That, episode 86 of This Gun in My Hand, was enunciated by Rob Northrup. This episode and all others are available on Youtube with automatically-generated closed captions of dialog. What’s the last thing I remember? This Gun in My Hand!

Show Notes:
1. I did not watch the 1915 Birth of a Nation to research this episode. Maybe Papo is lying or misremembering his scenes in the movie. I have watched the 2016 Birth of a Nation. They changed a few key details in that remake.

2. Lillian Gish, Henry B. Walthall, Elmer Clifton, Spottiswoode Aitken and Elmo Lincoln appeared in Birth of a Nation and some other D.W. Griffith films. “Papo Threadgill” is a fictional character who claims to have appeared in Birth of a Nation.

Sun, 6 Aug 2023 04:12:00 -0700

Strawberry blond woman in red dress and hat, seated in a wooden chair, leaning away from a pair of pointing hands in the right edge of the picture. She holds a black clutch purse and fur, her left hand in a white glove, her right hand holding the purse and loose white glove. She gives a concerned look towards the person pointing. The background is green.

Falk Meets Fantomas - Episode 84

Sat, 15 Jul 2023 14:37:00 -0700

Painting, close-up of a young man's face, almost in profile, his eyes aimed toward the viewer. A hand behind and above him is grasping the white wig on his head, partly revealing dark brown hair under it. The man's own hands are both grasping his gray beard which appears to be fake. A partially obscured red circle in the lower left corner says 65, LE VOLUME COMPLET...

Another early 20th Century character no one was clamoring to see revived: Falk Meets Fantomas! Can Falk trust anyone? Can anyone trust Falk? Listen to find out!

Falk Meets Fantomas, episode 84 of This Gun in My Hand, was created by [splorch] yes, it is I – Rob Northrup! Show Notes:
1. Peanut butter was widely known by 1939.

2. Yes, there should be a circumflex over the letter “o” in Fantômas but English websites might lose their minds or display it as a glitch so I’m avoiding it, especially in titles and filenames.

Falk seeks help from a strange doctor to pass through the doors of perception on the trail of a French killer! Will he return from the sixth dimension with his dangerous quarry? Will he return at all? Listen to find out!

Falk Zildjian in the Multitracks of Madness, episode 83 of This Gun in My Hand, was shifted from left to right and back again by Rob Northrup. This episode and all others are available on Youtube with automatically-generated closed captions of dialog. Visit http://ThisGuninMyHand.blogspot.com for credits, show notes, information on how to subscribe, and to buy my books, such as Little Heist in the Big Woods and Other Revisionist Atrocities. Only $2.99. Cheap! What do I use to unlock the doors of perception? This Gun in My Hand!

Show Notes:
1. Celery tonic, wine of cod liver oil, liquid bread, witch hazel jelly and Schiffer’s electric oil are actual nostrums I read about several years ago while preparing 1890s issues of American Druggist to be scanned.

2. The idea for this story hit me when I was adding the promo for Madison On the Air* to a previous episode. All eighty-two episodes of This Gun in My Hand up to this point have been delivered in glorious MONO, but the promo was in stereo. I felt like I was diminishing Madison’s promo by changing it to mono, but the possibility of someday shoving Falk into stereo was irresistible. All succeeding episodes will be back to glorious MONO.

* An excellent audio drama comedy you should listen to, www.madisonontheair.com

Credits:
The opening and commercial transitional music clips were from The Sun Sets at Dawn (1950), and the closing music was from Killer Bait (1949), both films in the public domain. Most of the music and sound effects used in the episode are modified or incomplete versions of the originals.

The guitar, harmonica and ocarina during the extra-dimensional parts was improvised, performed and edited by Robert Thomas Northrup. Available for weddings and bar mitzvahs. Unreasonable rates.

Public domain clips from old time radio shows were used as lines in the fake commercial:
“Hurry!” is Al Hodge from The Green Hornet, 31 October 1939, “The Parking Lot Racket.”
“You get a bang out of watching that?” is Lauren Bacall from Bold Venture, 26 March 1951, “Deadly Merchandise.”
“Just funnel this down, now what do you want?” is Jack Webb from Pete Kelly’s Blues, 29 August 1951, “Zelda.”

The image accompanying this episode is a cropped public domain ad for the National Radio Institute which appeared in Weird Tales, Volume 36, Number 9 (May 1946).
