🎈 HAPPY BIRTHDAY, STORIES! It's been three years since my first episode. Thank you for tuning in to the stories I wish you heard. I hope you enjoy today's twin offering. He looks so lonely in the early morning sky. Never looked more beautiful than when he’s breaking my heart. I look straight into his dark brown eyes and see a million forevers that would never be. It’ll be morning soon. I will be mourning soon.

You know, my life’s been a mess these last few weeks. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t be putting all this on you. I know we just met but… it feels like you’re the only calm in my life. Would you… would you mind staying the night? Just for tonight. I just really need someone to hold me.

intro: a very Stories christmas
Fri, 23 Dec 2022 20:10:35 GMT
POV: It’s Christmas and you’re lonely in a sea of people. You call a friend to tell you a bedtime story or two.
---
𝗮 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗮𝘀: a collection of 100-word stories and holiday songs to sleep to.

Hey, it’s been a while.
Yeah, yeah. I know. I said I’d be back soon but…
I’ve been busy. Just with the holidays. H – how about you?
That’s good to hear. I know this season can be tough sometimes but I see you hanging on.
What? A story? Aren’t you a little too old for stories?
Fine, but you know how this goes. They never end up in the end.
Are you around a lot of people? Yeah, go ahead. I’ll wait.
You in bed? Why don’t you breathe in for me? Breathe out. Breathe in. Breathe out.
These are the stories that I wish you heard.

I remember the last time you kissed me. You were half awake when I crawled into bed. With eyes closed, you kissed me good night. Outside, the city breathed in and out like it does every night. I didn’t know what was happening at that time – didn’t know that was the last time you could ever do that. If I knew then what I know now, would I have kissed you with my eyes wide open?
The demons came back and they took me from you. Like the million times before, I say I’m sorry wondering if you ever will.

When you left, I fantasized about the moment I’d see you again.
Perhaps the next time you see these eyes, they won’t be crying anymore. The next time you hear this heartbeat, it won’t be in sync with yours anymore.
And maybe then, if I’m good and I eat my vegetables and drink my milk at night, you wouldn’t know that I still care about you. Tell me about the lives you’ve lived without me. Tell me it was worth it in the end.
Because right now it doesn’t seem like it ever will be. Tell me how I survive.

I search through the cracks for my memory, some reminder that I was there. You are whole again and I’m still in pieces.
It’s been years but even the earth remembers earthquakes. Skyscrapers may rise where bungalows fall but if you look closely, you’ll see patches of wild grass growing in the cracks.
You smile nonchalantly, pretend you don’t notice me staring at you. You pretend you don’t remember me loving you.
You ask if I’m okay. I smile back. And just like that, a glimmer of kindness in your eyes, a patch of lime and purple in the concrete.

I once lit a torch for you. Its glow provided light through the darkest nights. It kept me warm on evenings most unforgiving. And then you woke up one day, packed your bags and told me you didn’t want it anymore.
I set down my torch for you years ago but I lit a candle in its place. It has burned meekly all these years though it has never once warmed your bones.
The last time I saw you, there was a vacancy in your eyes. They say it’s the season of giving. This Christmas, I’m giving up on you.

He says “Ah, but that was a lifetime ago” and I nod. Sometimes, memories are so distant, they stop belonging to you. I remember loving him, I remember slowing my breath so our hearts could beat in time, but it’s as if it was a story someone told me over breakfast or a short film I saw online.
Yes, I loved him but that was a lifetime ago and I’m barely the same person.
One day, I believe all the socks who’ve lost their pairs will find their missing halves. When that time comes, would we still feel the same?

“Are we good?” he asks me as I am packing my things. “You seem upset?”
“I’m fine,” I lie. “But for what it’s worth, I release you. What happened happened a lifetime ago. I am letting you go.”
He looks up, confused. “You release me? What is there to release? Whatever you’re feeling – that’s on you. I dealt with all that years ago. I’m done.”
No man steps in the same river twice. For it is not the same river. He is not the same man.
How could I tell him? I thought he already knew. Sometimes, the river remembers.

“Where I’m from, they name storms after women,” he said to me and I asked why. “Only a woman can ravage so swiftly, so completely.” At that point, I knew I loved him.
I thought that I could take him. I thought I was his typhoon. Then one day, I realized he’d been safe under his umbrella the whole time. Silly me.
You said they name storms after women. Why don’t they name earthquakes? If they did, I’d tell them to name one after you. You who shook me to the core – your fault line ran deep in my heart.

You still there? Yeah, that was the last one.
I guess you have to go back – it’s pretty rude to be in your room while everyone’s out there.
Hey. I just want you to know. I’m here for you. You don’t have to go through this alone.
Good night, tiger. And Merry Christmas.

Intro: Bedtime stories
You still up? Yeah, no I wasn’t waiting up. I just wanted to make sure you got home okay.
(sigh) Long day? Yeah, I can tell. It’s just one of those days I guess.
Well, at least you’re safe now. You don’t have to pretend anymore. You can just… be yourself.
A story? Aren’t you a little too old for bedtime stories?
Okay. Well if it’ll help you sleep, I’m sure I can think of something. Okay.
Why don’t you close your eyes. Feel your body sink deeper and deeper into your bed.
Listen to the sound of my voice as you breathe in and breathe out.
Breathe in. Breathe out. That’s it.
These are the stories that I wish you heard.

Come here and I’ll write you a story. Let me immortalize you in allegories and words. Lay down on the bed and undress. I want to see every mole, every scar. I want to capture those little folds in tight spaces. I want to remember it all.
Tomorrow, I must come back to him, and you to her. Memories fade into regrets so swiftly. Let me write a story where we end up together, where we won’t hurt anyone and we can just love.
He hesitates then comes close. I scribble furiously. “Come here and I’ll write you a story.”

He said he loved the smell of rain. I said rain didn’t smell like anything. It must’ve been the heat escaping from the ground. No, he insisted. When it comes, you’ll understand what I mean.
He said he loved the smell of rain and so I showed him mine. I let him in to see my thunder, my scattered rainfalls, my tropical depressions. It was too late when the first of the floods rushed in.
Struggle. Air. Footing. The last time I saw him.
In the early morning when there is quiet, I still hear the boy who cried rain.

Your feet take you to a convenience store fridge. You see rows upon rows of cans and bottles beckoning. Choose me. Choose. Me. You search through a dozen kinds of coffee, soda, iced tea, designer water. You search through memory for ones you’ve tried, imagination for the ones you haven’t.
You choose. Like a million other decisions made daily, you choose. You reach out. The bottle starts to quiver. It sprouts eyes and arms. A few centimeters from touching, it turns around and walks away.
You called. I answered. You let go. That’s what it was like to love you.

I was told that all lies are half-true and that the world’s greatest deceptions on the earth and in the heart all have a bit of truth laced in.
It was a warm August day when he said he loved me. He said he didn’t know how, why, or even when but I’d somehow struck his heart like a chord or a comet and for that, he was irrevocably mine.
I jumped right in. We fell too hard. In the morning, he was gone.
Optimists pride themselves in seeing the glass half-full. I pride myself in seeing your love half-true.

Whenever I hear cars parking outside my apartment, I imagine you’ve come back to me. I imagine your keys switching off the transmission. You check yourself in the rearview as you rehearse these lines in your head.
I’m sorry. That was a mistake. I hope it’s not too late.
And so as soon as I hear tires on the gravel, I rush to see if it’s you. When I see it isn’t, I continue practicing what I’d say i̶f̶when you come back.
It’s not too late. There’s nothing to forgive. I love you.
Hope can be such a cruel thing.

What I learned from all my years of loving and failing is that you never truly own anybody.
I’ve heard him say he loved me, scream promises to never leave me, and I watched as he took it all back. I’ve held on to his words, I’ve waited for him to come back only to find nothing but the cruelty of a door that by all means can open but never does.
I have climbed many mountains and crossed many hearts, many seas but the farthest distance I will ever know is between a forgotten promise and an unforgetting heart.

People who’ve been shot and lived to tell their story claim it doesn’t really feel like anything. The bullet punctures your skin and an overwhelming feeling of numbness takes over. Such is the body’s nature when it knows it’s about to die.
In contrast, it’s the small and constant pains that are unbearable. Ticking headaches, impacted molars – they bring even the mightiest to their knees.
Everytime you slip away, the pain floors me and I have to wait for the room to stop spinning. I look forward to the day you leave me. The numbness will be a welcome mistress.

I’d like to believe there was love there. These days, my reality seems less like what it is and more of what I pick and pull from my memories and today, I choose to believe that there was love there.
Despite everything that happened, despite all the shit you pulled me through, I want to believe that when you said you love me, you meant it. Really, it’s all I can do to stay sane.
I once read that love on its own doesn’t hurt. It’s everything else that does. I wonder, does it hurt when you think of me?

He kisses me goodbye as he leaves, says I love you like a punctuation mark then he joins the world. Gone is the fire in this man’s eyes. Time will do that to you. Life will do that to you.
At night, I lay my head on his chest and count his heartbeats, wondering which ones are mine. As he sleeps, I whisper confessions in his ear.
You don’t think I know where you go when you close your eyes while you’re with me.
And you don’t know how much I’d give just to be the one you see there.

To love is to surrender a part of you, a part you never quite get back even when he leaves. That’s the hollow you feel. You’re never really you again.
So you make do with the little you have left. You try to make it through the day without waking his ghosts. You make it through one more then another. Then it’s Thursday and it’s just one more day ‘til you can fall apart. One more day ‘til you can stop pretending.
Life without you is like a week filled with Thursdays and Friday just won’t come. Friday’s gonna come.

They say each cell in the body is methodically replaced every seven years. If that were true then I’m hardly the same person anymore.
I once had eyes that could only see you and lips that could only kiss you. But they don’t move that way anymore. I have a heart that doesn’t beat the way it used to. They say you cannot hurt me anymore.
But between the e and d in I loved you, your memory still lingers. Seven years have passed. Not a cell in my body has touched you but every single one knows your name.

There’s a heart out there and it beats for me. It pumps blood through veins and he doesn’t know it yet but it pumps for me.
When you’re young, love comes easy. To trust in the frailty of strangers, To believe there’s a net when you leap. But now there are bills to pay, days to seize, and too many men gone by morning.
Yet in the still of night, after I hang up my hangups and wash off the day’s dirt and regrets, I lie awake and hear the beating of a heart – a heart that beats for me.

Outro: Good night, tiger.
Still up? (laughs) Yeah, that’s the last one.
Yeah. You go get some rest.
Don’t forget that you’re beautiful and that you are loved by all around you. Remember that you have a right to be here. That you matter.
One day, you will slay all the dragons in your life. You are destined for greatness. But that’s for another day. Tonight… tonight, you sleep.
Good night, tiger. I’ll catch you back here tomorrow.
