This week’s recommendation is the song “El baile del gavilán”, by Chicos de Barrio. This band isn’t from Monterrey, but from the nearby city of Torreón. But this song is a sort of manifesto for the dancing style mentioned in this episode.

El Guacho tells him the story of the two rhythm instruments of cumbia and vallenato: the caja and the guacharaca, and how so many rhythms, and even a rather fortunate accident, trace their roots to these two sounds.

This week’s recommendation is the music of Gabriel Duéñez. He’s a sonidero from Monterrey, and he’s the one to thank for the “accident” that gave life to the now beloved cumbia rebajada. Visit our website, that you can find in our shownotes, for links to his music.

Wed, 14 Sep 2022 11:30:48 GMT

Gavilán lives in New York, but returns to his hometown of Monterrey, Mexico, for his grandpa Lolo’s funeral. Once there, he starts to discover that his grandfather, a famously stubborn musician who never wanted to leave the city, developed a fervent passion for Colombian vallenato.

Weekly recomendation:

“Barrio Bravo“, Celso Piña’s album. Celso is, no doubt, the best known vallenato and cumbia musician in Monterrey, and this album is one of his most iconic ones because of the way he plays around with the rythms to create something new.

Studio Ochenta Presents: Mija Música

Wed, 07 Sep 2022 11:30:37 GMT

The city of Monterrey, Mexico absolutely loves Colombian vallenato. This music was born thousands of miles away from here, but each one of its elements–the rhythm, the accordion, the lyrical nostalgia–allow us to understand how it managed to grow roots in this city.

Mija Podcast is back with a special season: "Mija Música." This 6-episode fiction miniseries tells the story of Gavilán, a young man who lives in New York, but returns to his hometown of Monterrey for his grandfather's funeral. His Grandpa Lolo was a vallenato musician, and during Gavilán's visit he gradually threads the story of how Monterrey became so fond of this Colombian musical style that it became an essential part of the city's soundtrack.

New episodes will be released weekly starting September 14.
