Chapter 81: Happy Birthday, Florida Man (Rebroadcast)

Wed, 13 Sep 2023 14:13:25 +0000

If the 2000s have shown us anything it is the popularity of social media "challenges." Tide Pod, Cinnamon, and 10 Year are just a few that come to mind. Does anybody else remember the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge? Ugh I'm still steamed that I was NEVER nominated. So to make up for my FOMO I have nominated myself to take part in an even more exciting challenge: The Florida Man Challenge. Google your birthday followed by "Florida Man" and see what pops up. Mine are "Florida Man Accused of Killing Neighbor Over Cat Issue" and "Florida man, 52, told police that he shot and dismembered his 42-year-old housemate, saying he could 'possibly be the next mass killer that we hear about in the media.'" Oh boy do we have a show for y'all today! Originally broadcast April 20, 2022.

Written and narrated by Schuyler Fastenau-Jones and executive produced by Daniel Fastenau-Jones. Additional voices by Jeremy Staple, Janette Zosche, Jordan Katcher, Juno Nifosi, Ahesha Catalano, and Daniel Fastenau-Jones. Cover artwork by Catherine Fastenau. Theme music by Tracy Zales. Editing and sound design by Brian Campbell.

Stop number one on our murderous road trip across America is Rhode Island. Summer may nearly be over but that doesn't mean we can't enjoy a good old theme park! Written and narrated by Schuyler Fastenau and executive produced by Daniel Jones. Additional voices by Tamara Perry, Jordan Katcher, Janette Zosche, Taylor Shurte, Jeremy Staple, Daniel Jones, Gabriel Rivers, and David DeGraw Shotwell. Cover artwork by Catherine Fastenau. Chapter 38: Love like a Hurricane (Rebroadcast with a Note)

Wed, 16 Aug 2023 14:22:14 +0000

Hey Deadtime Storians I wanted to share some sad news with all of you. Unfortunately we lost a very close friend to our personal family as well as the Deadtime Stories family this weekend. On Sunday Tracy Zales, our friend and theme song composer passed away. She was one of the kindest souls on this planet and we are absolutely devastated by the news. In honor of Tracy, I wanted to re-run the first episode we used her music for. Rest in peace my friend.

New Orleans is full of history, ghost stories, and true crime. The case of Zack Bowen and Addie Hall is perhaps the city's most infamous crime but the tales about the couple told late at night by ghost tours through the French Quarter don't come anywhere close to examining the couple's full story.

Written by Schuyler Fastenau-Jones and executive produced by Daniel Fastenau-Jones. Additional voices by Walker Barnes, Taylor Shurte, Tamara Perry, Jordan Katcher, Allyn Anthony Moriyon, Marissa Pistone, Jeremy Staple, Matt MacNelly, and Daniel Fastenau-Jones. Cover artwork by Catherine Fastenau. Theme music by Tracy Zales. Sound recording by Chelsea Bray.

Chapter 21: The Artist San Francisco Forgot (Rebroadcast)

Wed, 28 Jun 2023 14:25:56 +0000

The Doodler was one of the first stories that drew me into the true crime world. Back in the 70s, a man was terrorizing The Castro District in San Francisco by luring in his victims with drawings of them on a cocktail napkin. I'd definitely be a sucker for a portrait of myself but would not want to meet the fate these men did. Originally broadcast June 19, 2019.

Written, narrated, and edited by Schuyler Fastenau-Jones. Additional voices by Jacob Walle, Chris Wilkin, Richard Torres, Rick Jr., Steven Coe, Antonio Hill, Brandon Maple, Sandy Rose, and Daniel Fastenau-Jones.

Chapter 55: Catching the Love Bug (Rebroadcast)

Wed, 21 Jun 2023 13:38:11 +0000

How's that old COVID-19 joke go? Murder your spouse now, blame it on the corona virus later? If you're a fan of true crime memes then you probably saw this at some point last year. In Florida, it became a reality. Of course this wasn't the first time a virus was used as a weapon. Just a few years ago, Daryll Rowe harnessed HIV to attack other gay men. Originally broadcast February 17, 2021.

Chapter 89: Do Say Trans (Rebroadcast)

Wed, 31 May 2023 08:00:02 +0000

Pride Month is just about here and with certain political parties and states attacking the rights of my people, I feel the need to take the time to share stories from my community during June. Chapter 24: A Bad Case of the Mondays (Rebroadcast)

Wed, 10 May 2023 14:12:51 +0000

Not so fun fact: there have been 200 mass shootings which have claimed over 11,000 lives in the United States this year. For those counting, we're at 130 days this year which means we're averaging more than one shooting a day. Those numbers ARE. NOT. O. K. Gun violence needs to end in this country and I feel something I can do is remind my listeners about the stories of survivors and victims. Brenda Spencer is known as the mother of school shootings. Hopefully by hearing her story, we do not forget the lives of the victims of Grover Cleveland Elementary School. Originally broadcast August 30, 2019.

Written by Schuyler Fastenau-Jones and executive produced by Daniel Fastenau-Jones. Additional voices by Aimee Euwell, Fred Fastenau, Christian Corpora, Keelan Brown, Daniel Fastenau-Jones, Taylor Walter, Mike Allen, Ryan Call, Heather Geisler, Shaina Hammer, Julie Sesnovich, Alec Nielson. Listener note: This episode contains language that may be offensive to non-neurotypical individuals. This is for the purpose of historical accuracy and does not reflect the cast or crew's opinions.

Our next stop is Columbus, Ohio! After Jack Carmen, a non-neurotypical man, was accused and sent to jail for the murder of Christie Mullins in under two weeks, two journalism students at Ohio State University started to question "Who DID Kill Christie Mullins?" But surely two college kids can't make a difference in the justice system, right?

Chapter 56: The Mockingbird's Lesson Continues CENSORED (Rebroadcast)

Wed, 22 Feb 2023 15:43:08 +0000

PLEASE NOTE: Today's episode includes language some may find triggering. These slurs are for the purpose of historical accuracy and do not reflect the opinions of the cast or crew at The Original Deadtime Stories. This version of the episode has these slurs bleeped out.

We've seen how dangerous Amite County was for African Americans during the Civil Rights Movement. Herbert Lee was murdered in broad daylight by a politician. Shortly after, another African American man was murdered on his own property. Was it a coincidence or was it because he threatened to tell the truth at Herbert's trial? We all know the answer but let's be one of the first to examine Louis Allen's story closer. Originally broadcast February 24, 2021.

Wed, 04 Jan 2023 16:23:10 +0000

To celebrate the start of the new year, I'm going to keep with tradition and share our most popular episode of 2022! Anyone as obsessed with true crime and mysteries as I am will surely know the story of the Axeman of New Orleans. He terrorized Italian immigrants in the early 1900s and introduced us to the term "jazz it." But did you know this was not the first incident of an unknown person (or persons) terrorizing Louisiana with an ax? It probably won't come as much of a surprise to learn that over five years earlier, someone was attacking black communities with a family's own hatchet in the dead of night. Sound familiar? The Aftermath puts two former reporters into Hell where they interview the WORST talent Hell has to offer. Ryan Rivers and Jordan Jamison ask those hard hitting pop culture questions to the worst serial killers we've seen while making time for roasting and games. Also available on YouTube.

Cereal Killerz hands the average citizen some weed and cereal and asks them to tell you all about true crime. Also available on YouTube.

Kila Young, our very own Cocktail Ballerina, walks you through the unheard, uncensored, and unrepresented murders of sex workers. Each week she'll tell us about a crime against a sex worker, how it relates to her own time in that industry, and how you can protect yourself out there whether you're a sex worker or not.

Finally, our very own Jordan Katcher hosts True Crime False Crime where you can play along with our guests every week as they answer that age old question, "Was that a True Crime or a False Crime?" Also available on YouTube.

Chapter 89: Do Say Trans

Wed, 02 Nov 2022 08:00:02 +0000

Pride Month is...well it's very much over but that doesn't mean I can't do a series about crimes against the LGBTQ+ community, right? After all, with abortion being banned state by state, we all know our super Christian Supreme Court is coming after my rights as a gay man next so pardon me while I build my people up. Angie Zapata was a brave trans woman whose life may have been cut short but that doesn't mean she couldn't do something major for the LGBTQ+ community though.

Please note this episode deals with violence against a member of the trans community. Listener discretion is advised.

Written and narrated by Schuyler Fastenau-Jones and executive produced by Daniel Fastenau-Jones. Additional voices by Jeremy Staple, Janette Zosche, Jordan Katcher, Krystal Mosley, Kayla Esmond, Katrina Marie Nunez, and Daniel Fastenau-Jones. Theme music by Tracy Zales.

Wed, 19 Oct 2022 08:00:02 +0000

Happy Halloween! Today's episode finds us in Plainfield, Wisconsin. It seems to be a sleepy little town where everyone gets along with their neighbors...unless your neighbor happens to be the Gein family. Augusta Gein is a very religious woman and if you drink, swear, or wear clothing she deems too skimpy, you're a dirty sinner. One could say she's a lot like Mrs. Bates from Psycho. Could her son be on the same level as Norman Bates? Let's listen and find out! Originally broadcast October 13, 2021.

Written and narrated by Schuyler Fastenau and executive produced by Daniel Jones. Wed, 05 Oct 2022 08:00:02 +0000

My dreams are either super weird or super terrifying. Chester Poage had the terrifying brand of dream one night when he saw his mother and sister die in a plane crash. Was it an ominous warning? Or just a silly dream? Well Elijah Page has the answer though he's been suffering from his own real-life nightmare: a trip down memory lane to his traumatic childhood.

Please note this episode deals with sexual abuse and violence against children. Listener discretion is advised.

Chapter 86: Keeping Up With the Butlers

Wed, 28 Sep 2022 08:00:02 +0000

We all have that neighborhood weirdo we kinda hope moves off the block and sometimes, WE'RE that strange banana on the street. Even in the late 1800s and early 1900s, folks dealt with unique individuals in their town. For the folks of Niagara, North Dakota, that man was Eugene Butler. But could crazy old Eugene really have murdered five men and buried them on his farm?

Chapter 85: 27 and Counting

Wed, 21 Sep 2022 08:00:02 +0000

Growing up, I was bullied in school. Heck, I think most kids were. Some days were harder than others and I always wished it would stop. I never imagined causing harm to anyone though. Seth Bartell and John Jason McLaughlin were sorta like me and my bullies. Jason, however, would do something I could never possibly want to do let alone act upon.

Please note this episode revolves around a school shooting which may be triggering to some listeners.

Written and narrated by Schuyler Fastenau-Jones and executive produced by Daniel Fastenau-Jones. Additional voices by Jeremy Staple, Janette Zosche, Jordan Katcher, Krystal Mosley, Kayla Esmond, and Daniel Fastenau-Jones. Theme music by Tracy Zales. Cover artwork by Catherine Fastenau.

Chapter 84: Starter Home? In THIS Economy?!

Wed, 14 Sep 2022 08:00:03 +0000

And we're BACK! Hope y'all haven't missed us too much. We've been delayed in Arkansas's Clinton Airport on our DTS Roadtrip Across America but we're very excited to FINALLY have a flight to Iowa. While we're traveling, we're thinking about looking at homes for sale since we're CLEARLY rich enough to own one...Speaking of homes, I heard you need a real estate agent to buy one. I wonder if anything super tragic has ever happened to someone showing a home. Hmmmm.

Chapter 68: The Last Death of 9/11 (Rebroadcast)

Wed, 07 Sep 2022 08:00:02 +0000

Our next stop on our murderous road trip across America is New York. It's been 21 years since two planes crashed into the World Trade Centers in New York City and forever changed the lives of Americans. Being in second grade, I didn't fully understand what the events of that day meant and I certainly never heard about a Polish immigrant named Henryk Siwiak. Twenty-one years later it seems like a lot of people still haven't heard about him. Hopefully today's episode gives him the media exposure he deserves, something that wasn't possible in September 2001. Originally broadcast September 8, 2021.

Written and narrated by Schuyler Fastenau-Jones and executive produced by Daniel Jones. Additional voices by Tamara Perry, Jordan Katcher, Janette Zosche, Taylor Shurte, Jeremy Staple, Daniel Fastenau-Jones, and Gabriel Rivers. Cover artwork by Catherine Fastenau. Chapter 83: Ciggies, Birds and a Convenience Store

Wed, 04 May 2022 08:00:03 +0000

College was a really fun part of my life but campuses can be dangerous places. I received many an e-mail from campus police about a sexual assault or attempted sexual assault on campus and the steps we can do to protect ourselves (one of the many reasons Roe V. Wade should not be overturned btw). Whenever we received those e-mails, the student body would be on edge for a while, hoping we weren't next. In the 90s though, it wasn't just the students at Missouri's Lindenwood University who would run into trouble. Sometimes it was an innocent bystander from the surrounding neighborhoods.

Please note: this episode contains reenactments of sexual assault against a minor which may be triggering and disturbing. Listener discretion is advised.

Written and narrated by Schuyler Fastenau-Jones and executive produced by Daniel Fastenau-Jones. Additional voices by Jeremy Staple, Janette Zosche, Jordan Katcher, Juno Nifosi, Ahesha Catalano, and Daniel Fastenau-Jones. Theme music by Tracy Zales. Editing and sound design by Brian Campbell. Chapter 82: Unwritten

Wed, 27 Apr 2022 08:00:02 +0000

Whenever I listen to or read the news these days I learn a lot of things are now banned in classrooms because they make students uncomfortable. In fact, just this past week I read a quick blurb about 41% of Florida's math textbooks are going under review because they allegedly teach critical race theory. Though it's unpleasant to feel uncomfortable, sometimes you have to learn these things so history does not repeat itself. Today's chapter is my way of passing along a story Arkansas's written records tell very differently than oral histories passed down by people of color.

Please note: this episode contains reenactments of sexual assault and extreme racism in a pre-Civil War America which some may find triggering. Listener discretion is advised.

Written and narrated by Schuyler Fastenau-Jones and executive produced by Daniel Fastenau-Jones. Additional voices by Jeremy Staple, Janette Zosche, Jordan Katcher, Juno Nifosi, Ahesha Catalano, and Daniel Fastenau-Jones. Theme music by Tracy Zales. Editing and sound design by Brian Campbell.

Chapter 81: Happy Birthday, Florida Man

Wed, 20 Apr 2022 09:00:03 +0000

Written and narrated by Schuyler Fastenau-Jones and executive produced by Daniel Fastenau-Jones. Chapter 79: Body...?

Wed, 02 Feb 2022 10:00:03 +0000

I'm not famous by any means BUT I was hounded by the press once. Okay so maybe hounded isn't the BEST choice of words. A reporter got out of his car right as I happened to be walking home from high school, he saw my book bag, and asked me about our new lunch options at school and whether I agreed with the government regulations of our lunches or not. I was so awkward on camera and grabbed the mic then released the mic then grabbed it again, totally unsure what he wanted me to do. Thank goodness they did NOT include my interview in the final edit. Could you imagine what would've happened if it had been an interview about a murder victim instead of cafeteria lunches and I knew something about that victim?! That would've been awkward. Well...there's at least one guy in this world who can imagine that.

Written and narrated by Schuyler Fastenau and executive produced by Daniel Jones. Please note: due to the time and location of the story, this episode contains racial slurs for historical accuracy. More extreme words have been bleeped out. In addition, the episode includes violence against children. Listener discretion is advised.

As we continue our investigation into the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing, we'll dig deeper into the lives of the Cherry family and the cracks that formed between a father and son. Tom Cherry is about to learn the lesson all children learn as they grow older: mom and dad are not always right.

Written and narrated by Schuyler Fastenau and executive produced by Daniel Jones. Chapter 77: Welcome to Bombingham

Wed, 19 Jan 2022 10:00:02 +0000

Please note: due to the time and location of the story, this episode contains racial slurs for historical accuracy. More extreme words have been bleeped out. In addition, the episode includes violence against children and graphic descriptions of post mortem photographs. Listener discretion is advised.

I don't think it's a secret that Birmingham, Alabama was not the safest place for African Americans during the Civil Rights Movement. Bombings of black owned business and neighborhoods became incredibly common and the city was given the nickname Bombingham. When a group of extremists decided to target a church one Sunday in September, the movement took a turn.

Chapter 76: The Axewoman of New Orleans

Wed, 12 Jan 2022 10:00:02 +0000

Anyone as obsessed with true crime and mysteries as I am will surely know the story of the Axeman of New Orleans. He terrorized Italian immigrants in the early 1900s and introduced us to the term "jazz it." But did you know this was not the first incident of an unknown person (or persons) terrorizing Louisiana with an ax? It probably won't come as much of a surprise to learn that over five years earlier, someone was attacking black communities with a family's own hatchet in the dead of night. Sound familiar?

Happy Halloween Deadtime Storians! My family's Halloween 'traditions' were probably vastly different than yours and I'm almost positive my parents were part of that gang of adults who swore someone was putting razor blades in our chocolate! So how did such a wild story start and why do we still believe a real life Boogie Man is hunting down our kids to this day?

Augusta Gein is a very religious woman and if you drink, swear, or wear clothing she deems too skimpy, you're a dirty sinner. One could say she's a lot like Mrs. Bates from Psycho. Could her son be on the same level as Norman Bates? Let's listen and find out!

Written and narrated by Schuyler Fastenau and executive produced by Daniel Jones. Additional voices by Tamara Perry, Jordan Katcher, Janette Zosche, Taylor Shurte, Jeremy Staple, Daniel Jones, and Gabriel Rivers. Cover artwork by Catherine Fastenau. Theme music by Tracy Zales. Chapter 72: Munchies and Mayhem

Wed, 06 Oct 2021 09:00:04 +0000

Next stop... Michigan. If Pizza Hut and Taco Bell could make a fusion restaurant work then surely Patricia and Kevin Artz could too. Y'all have heard of Kip's Pizza and Taco House, right? No? Well let me introduce you to it. If we're really nice, maybe The Deep Fry Killer himself will talk to us...then again he might be too high to do that. Too bad he didn't take the racist, homophobic, and genuinely terrible D.A.R.E. Program in school!

Chapter 71: A Fair to Remember

Wed, 29 Sep 2021 09:00:12 +0000

Listener note: This episode contains language that may be offensive to non-neurotypical individuals. This is for the purpose of historical accuracy and does not reflect the cast or crew's opinions.

Our next stop is Columbus, Ohio! After Jack Carmen, a non-neurotypical man, was accused and sent to jail for the murder of Christie Mullins in under two weeks, two journalism students at Ohio State University started to question "Who DID Kill Christie Mullins?" But surely two college kids can't make a difference in the justice system, right?

The Original Deadtime Stories Murderous Road Trip Across America continues to Logan, West Virginia. In a way, Mamie Thurman was a woman way ahead of her time. Chapter 69: Lights, Camera, Murder!

Wed, 15 Sep 2021 09:00:16 +0000

Stop number three on the Original Deadtime Stories Murderous Road Trip Across America is Pennsylvania. Back in high school I tried so hard to make a movie with my best friends. I assumed we could totally make a feature length film in one week and needless to say, it went absolutely terribly. Maybe I should've asked for five thousand dollars from everyone involved with the project. Then again, that didn't seem to work out so well for Blaine Norris and Brian Trimble.

Chapter 68: The Last Death of 9/11

Wed, 08 Sep 2021 09:00:02 +0000

Our next stop on our murderous road trip across America is New York. It's been 20 years since two planes crashed into the World Trade Centers in New York City and forever changed the lives of Americans. Being in second grade, I didn't fully understand what the events of that day meant and I certainly never heard about a Polish immigrant named Henryk Siwiak. Twenty years later it seems like a lot of people still haven't heard about him. Hopefully today's episode gives him the media exposure he deserves. Something that wasn't possible in September 2001.

Chapter 67: Murder at the Midway

Wed, 01 Sep 2021 09:00:18 +0000

Stop number one on our murderous road trip across America is Rhode Island. Summer may nearly be over but that doesn't mean we can't enjoy a good old theme park! Frank Sheffield took his five year old daughter Maggie out to enjoy an afternoon at Rocky Point Amusement Park. It would be an afternoon neither would forget.

Wed, 09 Jun 2021 09:00:10 +0000

We know I am OBSESSED with competition reality shows so when I can marry those with true crime, I'm one happy fan boy. Survivor may have been postponed due to COVID-19 but that won't stop us from gossiping about it and the drama that went on behind the scenes with one of their producers, his wife, and a trip to Mexico. Can they outwit, outplay, and outlast the resort and Mexican government? Find out tonight on...The Original Deadtime Stories! Season three finale.

Chapter 65: A Blockbuster Fright

Wed, 02 Jun 2021 09:00:13 +0000

What's the biggest trend in TV right now? Nostalgia. In the past week-ish alone we've seen the premiere of a Rugrats reboot, a Friends reunion, and the announced return of Legends of the Hidden Temple (all of which I love by the way). When I think of 90s nostalgia I think of a trip to our local Blockbuster video rental. The place was so popular that I'm sure it'll be no surprise to learn a killer got his nickname from the place.

Chapter 62: Has Anyone Got a Torch?

Wed, 28 Apr 2021 09:00:18 +0000

Imagine your favorite vacation ever! Maybe you went camping in a national park. Did you bring your significant other and children along? Imagine you did and one of them wound up being killed by a wild animal. Nothing could be more tragic than that, right? Now imagine if the police blamed you for the death. That would certainly ruin your vacation.

Wed, 14 Apr 2021 09:00:21 +0000

We've seen how dangerous Amite County was for African Americans during the Civil Rights Movement. Herbert Lee was murdered in broad daylight by a politician. Shortly after, another African American man was murdered on his own property. Was it a coincidence or was it because he threatened to tell the truth at Herbert's trial? We all know the answer but let's be one of the first to examine Louis Allen's story closer.

How's that old COVID-19 joke go? Murder your spouse now, blame it on the corona virus later? If you're a fan of true crime memes then you probably saw this at some point last year.
