Learn about one of the mountaintop cities--the Peak of Defiance. Picasso hears a lovely song that haunts him, allowing him to see a vision of a third city that no one else can see. In Defiance, learn how the city runs and meet Ultraviolet and Stylus. Ultraviolet and Stylus begin to develop a personal relationship that could have a major impact on the future of those who think differently than the Scholar.

Violet and Picasso have a heart-to-heart talk about why he chose to train her over all the other candidates. A series of votes leads Violet and Stylus to conclude that Defiance's voting system may not be as perfect as is advertised. Picasso agrees to vouch for Stylus in their secret meeting in Picasso's shop, letting them into their confidence. Members of many guilds meet to discuss problems in Defiance's voting system and whether disobedience is warranted. At this meeting Picasso shares his painting of the mysterious "Man on the Mountain," but the meeting has been compromised. Who betrayed the gathering?

We move to the other Peak, the Peak of Reliance. In Reliance, an agrarian society performs final rites for some of its deceased members. But mourning is forbidden, because only sinners die. In this episode we are introduced to the precocious twins Sam and Roy, and their friend Ann, as they seek to unravel the mystery behind the last words of Sam and Roy's grandfather.

Roy is content to let the mystery drop in the case of his grandfather's mysterious papers, but Sam's curiosity is getting the better of him. Ann doesn't believe that her mother deserved to die, but others in the community think she lived a life of secret wickedness and are wary of Ann as a result.

Sam tricks Roy into going down the mountain into the mists with him, then tricks Ann to get her to do the same as well. Despite the danger, the three hatch a plot to sneak past the guard. Through Ann's acting ability, the trio head toward the valley in search of Ann's mom and the boy's grandfather. The boys hope to find the mysterious piece of paper their grandfather wanted to show them before he died Will they find the answers they seek?

Ann, Sam and Roy descend into the mist-filled valley. As they search for their grandfather's body, they uncover a disturbing truth. Then they split up to cover more ground, and the boys find the body they were looking for--their grandfather's body. Just as they get ready to read the papers, they receive unexpected guests. On this episode listeners will meet Arbor and Dolina, residents of the valley.

Roy and Sam go with Arbor and Dolina on the promise that Ann is resting at their cabin, but Ann is not at the cabin. Ann is in the valley looking for the boys. Ann meets a mysterious girl wandering the mists who looks like no one Ann has ever seen, and they hatch a plan to rescue the boys. But when this mysterious girl, Violet, is captured, what will Ann do?

Arbor and Dolina talk to the boys about the past, and try to convince them in a friendly way to stay in the valley with them. The boys finally discover what their grandfather was trying to tell them. Knowing this, Roy thinks it's important to get back to Reliance to tell people the truth. Arbor and Dolina aren't happy and try to force the boys to stay. But suddenly Ann appears with a plan to escape.

The first phase of Ann's plan to escape begins, but then the mysterious agent Maximilian approaches to interrogate the kids. Sam agrees to be questioned by Maximilian to buy the rest of the group time to organize the escape. What is Maximilian up to? Can the kids get away from Arbor and Dolina?

The kids sneak Violet into Reliance in an interesting way, but they're followed by a concerned citizen who wonders that they are up to. The boys' sister, Cori, helps them better hide Violet in plain sight, but Cori says she wants to know why Violet is there...and what is going on. The kids are on a mission to tell everyone the truth about the mist. But the unanswered question: will anyone listen?
Episode 12: The Return: Part 2

Betrayed by one they thought they could trust, the kids face trial by the council of elders. An unexpected source provides clarity…but that clarity is lost when a great secret is revealed. Sam and Ann are permanently banished from Reliance, separated from family and friends. Sent back into the Mist with Violet, the three hatch a plan to inform the Scholar, the leader of Defiance and protector of individual thought, about the existence of Reliance. But before this can happen they have to get past Mr. Acer and the bridge that will take them to the other peak.
Episode 14: The Reveal: Part 1

Roy and Cori catch up to Violet and Sam when they are on the bridge, only to discover that their warning of treachery is too late. Ann is gone, having fallen over the edge in the scuffle with Mr. Acer. How will the kids continue on? The only path is forward to Violet’s home peak of Reliance to meet the Scholar and seek his wisdom.
