Quorum — The Harbor Pilot’s Tale
Fri, 20 Jan 2023 02:00:00 +0000
Basel, August 2012. Switzerland’s most densely populated metropolis, famed as much for its cultural heritage as for its vital role in the Swiss banking and chemical industries. Situated at the border of Switzerland, Germany, and France, the city serves as a critical transit hub for cargo traffic on the Rhine river, a function that renders those with the skills to navigate the treacherous waterways especially vital… and one that may prove pivotal to the hastily-revised plans of a cabal of enigmatic conspirators.
Near-to-retirement Swiss harbor pilot Klaus Brunner is nearly home after a long day’s work when he is called back to direct an unexpected late-night cargo ship departure. But what seems a routine if inconvenient assignment changes dramatically when he discovers the true nature of the cargo they’re carrying — and must take drastic action if he hopes to escape with his life.
Rated AD-PG, so parental guidance is suggested
Contains one use of “damn,” a few instances of “hell,” some “my God” exclamations (in English, German, and French), some fairly rude culture-specific slang, as well as a couple of instance of foreign-language saltiness. Plus assorted forms of sometimes-lethal violence (as well as implied and explicit threats thereof), gunshots, explosions, video game addiction, and cold calculations that adversely affect human lives.

Fri, 29 Oct 2021 01:00:00 +0000
July 2012. After keeping a low profile for months in Los Angeles, poker player Jimmy Harmon at last has the opportunity to gain a seat at an exclusive high-stakes underground game — but before he can join in, he must contend with the return of his former girlfriend Robin, desperate for his help after being unwittingly drawn into a mystery that may have led to murder… a mystery that may have her next on the killer’s list.
Rated AD-PG, so parental guidance is suggested
Contains semi-adult language (a few instances of “crap,” “damn” and variations thereof, and “hell,” JC’s name in vain, “piss,” and “screw” in a non-explicit context), the depiction of the unpleasant consequences of drinking (enough rum to blind a pirate), actual drinking (beer, in the absence of a Screaming Viking), irresponsible pistol use, references to murder, gambling (maybe not poker, depending on your definition, but horse racing and proposition betting definitely count), and a virtually indecipherable Cockney dialect.

Through a Glass, Darkly, Episode 6: “The Raven” and “The Masque of the Red Death” by Edgar Allan Poe
Fri, 30 Oct 2020 01:00:00 +0000
We manage to eke out an entry in 2020 for this series right around Halloween with two classics from Edgar Allan Poe, “The Raven” and “The Masque of the Red Death.”
Rated AD-PG, so parental guidance is suggested
“The Raven” is essentially typical Poe existential dread which, unless you’ve recently seen Hitchcock’s The Birds should be fine. “The Masque of the Red Death,” however, may be upsetting to people hit hard by the global pandemic due to its depiction of the titular disease.

Through the Looking Glass, Episode 10: Two Shoemaker Tales by the Brothers Grimm and Andrew Lang
Fri, 26 Jun 2020 01:00:00 +0000
The classic German fairy tale “The Elves and the Shoemaker,” plus an appropriately clever Sicilian tale “The Cunning Shoemaker”
“The Elves and the Shoemaker”
by the Brothers Grimm, from their collection Kinder und Hausmärchen (1812)
translated by Edgar Taylor and Marian Edwardes (1823)
“The Cunning Shoemaker”
A tale from Sicily
Included in Andrew Lang’s collection The Pink Fairy Book (1897)
Rated AD-G for general audiences
Contains nought but whimsy in the first tale (okay, that and some nakedness), but does contain some death in the second one… but it does happen to bad people and is quite in line with fairy tale karma.

Through the Looking Glass, Episode 9: “Cinderella” by Charles Perrault
Fri, 19 Jun 2020 01:00:00 +0000
The iconic French version of a fairy tale which has variants going back centuries in many parts of the world. Don’t worry: this has all the quality step-family shenanigans you’re seeking.
Rated AD-G for general audiences
Contains thoughtless stepsisters and a rather cavalier attitude towards transmogrifying rodentia to be used as servants, but other than that, it’s pretty untroubling.
Click here for full show notes.
Through the Looking Glass, Episode 8: “Jack and the Beanstalk” by Andrew Lang
Fri, 12 Jun 2020 01:00:00 +0000
The English fairy tale of an enterprising young boy, a castle in the clouds, and some giants. It’s perhaps the best known of a series of “Jack Tales.”
Rated AD-G for general audiences
Contains a cruel and murderous giant, a conspiratorial and duplicitous giantess, and broken necks, which arguably might be the audio theater equivalent of villains falling from a great height.

Washington, DC, September 2011. A city as renowned for pushing papers as for pushing deadlines. Where the machinery of American government fights tooth and nail against the encroachment of twenty-first century technology… clinging desperately to methods, communication styles, and entire industries rendered obsolete in the world beyond the Capital Beltway.
Bicycle messenger Swipe is on the final delivery of her career — transporting a set of vital papers to a government office by a five o’clock deadline — before moving ahead with long-delayed wedding plans. But forces intent on interrupting that delivery quickly move to oppose her — as does one of her unprincipled courier competitors.

A bomb set by a henchman in the employ of Las Vegas gangster Wiktoria Sałkiewicz has apparently led to the death of his friend Will Archer. Sałkiewicz denies involvement, but they are attacked by armed gunmen before she can elaborate. Evading the attackers, Harmon and fellow gambler Rachael “Peeps” Leblanc head out of town, only to find a corpse half-buried in the desert, a set of unscrupulous federal agents in close pursuit. Returning to the city, Harmon seeks out veteran poker player “Big Mike” Dalton for help, only to discover that Dalton himself has been deeply involved in the past week’s activities. Dalton and the same gunmen who earlier attached Sałkiewicz hustle Harmon out to the hotel parking lot, only to run up against both the federal agents and the Las Vegas Police — a confrontation that results in a hail of unrestrained gunfire.

Bonus Music Track: Quorum Blues
Sun, 02 Dec 2018 17:00:00 +0000
A special bonus for JAT listeners: the complete track of one of jazz tracks we recording specifically for Quorum.

Ask Brooks to do what he does best: organize a group of seasoned pros to record some new tracks.
