Synopsis:
Nick Shepherd rockets up the UNRC Oil Company corporate ladder at warp speed. As he nears the highly coveted and competitive top spot, terrorism, marriage trauma, and an oil glut diverts his trajectory. Nick loses his focus, discovering what used to work for him no longer does. Longevity runs in his family, and he wonders, "Is this all there is?" This leads him to take irrational risks. This week I listened to a Zoom broadcast by Kristian Andersen, PHD, a genomic epidemiologist at Scripps Research here in San Diego titled Outsmarting Emerging Pathogens in an Interconnected World. My main takeaway was we are probably four years away from a truly effective vaccine. That was scary, but methodical and realistic. Somehow, I felt reassured. I urge you to listen. In the last episode James, Denny, and Tim helped Oak Village win the San Joaquin Valley Cross Country Championship and the California State Cross Country Championship. Ben West and Sally foiled Mrs. West’s attempt to murder the entire Wugidgem family, plus her own sister, Jill Kelly. Today, the Wugidgems learn of an imminent major dark side attack. Dad learns he and Reverend Peterson have something unusual in common. They head for Immersion again for more training on how to defend against the dark side threat.

In this prodigious period of pandemic, we are all catapulted into an environment none of us have ever experienced. Many of us have behaved in ways that reveal our dark sides. Many of us have connected with their compassionate side and helped total strangers in need. All of us are now spending time with our families and significant others more than we ever have. We need to make the best of that time.
A good sign is families are venturing out together to get fresh and virus-free air for exercise and meet essential needs. But most of our time will be spent with our dear ones in mandatory or self-imposed quarantine. I think this a terrific opportunity for each of us to learn to love all creation. I have been working on being this way for many years and have written a Thriller and Magical Realism Fantasies. These fictional stories focus on ways all people, even those on the dark side, can discover love and act on it. By coming from love, we improve ourselves, our families, and the world.

I recently received an amazing review of my Thriller, Slaves On Horseback, from a gentleman I met last month. It is truly a grabber, chock full of assassins, uncertainty about just who the villains are, a great chase scene near Golden Gate Park, and lots of references to places on the peninsula where I lived for more than 25 years. It seems to me that I do remember the name changes of between Cabana and Caesar’s Palace on El Camino, although I don’t remember marshmallow sundaes at Tresidder….I really enjoyed reading this book and think you have nailed this genre….I know that Wallace Stegner also was a mentor for Scott Turow and wonder if he was aware that he was fostering a line of thriller authors…..I hope you will continue to write thrillers!"

On the morning of his thirteenth birthday, July 4th, 1994, James Wugidgem hung upside-down by his feet from the opening to the main storm drain on Oak Street. Beams of white light flashed out the tips of his fingers and thumbs. He reached down, gathered up Whiskers, and saved her life. He knew strange things were supposed to happen when you become a teenager, but nothing like this! This was too weird!

The Palio Horse Race in Siena, Italy is an 800 year-old grudge match. Our tour covered Cinque Terre, Portofino, Florence, Lucca, Puccini's Birth Place, Etruscan Cities and Tombs, and Italian Marble Stone Quarries. We walked and hiked every day which was an excellent cross-training program enabling me to stay conditioned while recovering from running injuries. I also continued doing my daily positive affirmations to strengthen my mental attitude toward running and overcoming obstacles.

They broke Lani out of his hut prison, and then Lani briefed them on the extreme moves by Kapono, the new tribal chief. We left them as they approached the Clearing where his wife, Alika, and the other village women were meeting. Today they plan to fight Kapono to preserve women’s right to vote. Enjoy!

I have been running competitively since high school and college, rested a few years, then resumed running recreationally. Over the ensuing years, this evolved into occasional competitions. Then five years ago, I got serious, qualifying for the National Masters 800 and 1500 meters every year since then. I don’t win, but it’s been a great ride. I’ve been keeping a daily log and learned a lot about training, injuries and when to rest and when to push.
