Could life be measured by how far it has traveled? Possibly, after all time and space are intimately connected. Time slows down as you approach the speed of light and it’s been frequently postulated this could be a time machine of sorts that would allow one to travel to the future. But time just below the speed of light does not entirely stop. For example at 99 percent of C time dilation is only a factor of seven. You would still age, just seven times slower, and there would be an ultimate distance you could travel in one lifespan. In this month’s story, a downed pilot is saved from certain death on an isolated island by aliens and is taken on a trip to see their world. The only problem is that even at 99 percent of the speed of light the trip will take longer than the pilot’s remaining life. Maya and Tim live in a future powered by coal, and kids over eight must work for a living, but reality is not what it seems. Tim’s parents died after a random traffic accident, leaving him alone and in debt for the medical expenses. Unable to pay, his liabilities were auctioned off to a family who owns a café, where he now has to work until their daughter, Maya, finishes college. After receiving an unexpected message warning him to check the server logs at the café, Tim and Maya go to meet the mysterious sender, who initially appears to be a bag lady but is, in fact, from an old, eccentric, wealthy Way Station family. She takes Tim and Maya to the disused top floor of the Ashton Towers, where she reveals her involvement in a hundred-year-old society trying to understand the actions of an elusive and dangerous group that has been changing history. An imminent invasion derails a 500-year-old terraforming project. No one, except a small group of scientists, understands the threat's true nature and its implications for the future of their civilization. This story evolved out of a discussion on James Lovelock‘s Gaia hypothesis that the earth is a single complex organism, the recent announcement of the creation of a synthetic genome, and a story that appeared about the possibility of life on Titan, based on an entirely different chemistry than our own. This story evolved out of one of David’s writing assignments at school. This story grew out a conversion around Steven Hawking’s comments on the possibility of Alien Life, made at NASA’s the 50th anniversary.
