Episode 26 - Bringing The Universe To You

Fri, 21 Jul 2017 19:57:40 +0000

The Voice of Free Planet X returns to The Philadelphia Podcast Festival with a brand new live show! In an effort to bring an understanding from two sides of an intergalactic conflict, VFPX host Jared Axelrod invites Salamander Keep (Phil Thomas) and Loam Sodden (Andy Holman Hunter) to debate. But how can they when they keep getting interupted by time-traveler Tiff Tock (Lizzy Hindman-Harvey)? And why is the Devil himself, Lucifer, Who Is The Morningstar (Russell G Collins) hanging around in the audience?

From the ends of space to the depths of Hell, The Voice of Free Planet X brings you the universe to the comfort of your seats at Tattooed Mom! Featuring a live musical performance by Gina Martinelli!

A note about the audio: We had some wonderful mics provided for us by Bridge Set Sound, but I wrote an episode that had everyone running all all over the place. So, some parts were not picked up by the good mics, and I've edited in bits recorded by my handheld recorder that I had going just in case. I've tried to make the edits as unobtrusive as possible, but there is a difference in sound quality.

This is the last episode of Season 2! It is also the 25th episode by the new, GPR numbering, and the 200th episode by the old numbering! How about that? Pretty crazy, right? When I restarted the podcast, I was going to give myself until episode 200 to see if it was worth keeping it going. And you know what? It totally has.

Look for Season 3 to start in 2017!

Episode 24 - A Good Guy With A Magic Sword

Sat, 01 Oct 2016 04:01:00 +0000

If you live in the Kingdom of Cyriania, you’ve heard about the Feltrain Festival. The Feltrain Festival is an annual tradition in Cyriania, an all-night dance party, and one of the few that is, by tradition, unsegregated. All are welcome at Feltrain: Elves, Dwarves, Humans, Tanuki, Great Eagles, everyone. It’s often held up as a sign of Cyriania’s social progress, that ever since the fall of the Dark Lord Necron and the breaking of his bone throne, Cyriania has been moving forward.

This year, however, that illusion was shattered when Huber Heknut walked up to the Feltrain Festival and pulled out a magic sword that released a poison gas that killed 50 people at the festival in a matter of seconds.

Every tavern and inn conversation asks the same questions Should magic swords be banned? Or are magic swords an unalienable right? And what does the Raptor Queen have to say about all this?

The Awe-Inspiring Cast of "Just Around Supervillain Corner"

Wed, 27 Jul 2016 16:00:00 +0000

How can you not love Chris Morse's Supervillain Corner? It's only the best! Also, Chris not only lets me get away with my weird, out-of-the-box metascripts, he even voices Prof. Brainfever them! What a class-act.

Alasdair Stuart and Graham Wamsley had a tall order, having to sound incredibly bored the whole time, while John Davis had to be a bear.

I ask strange things of my actors.

Episode 19 - The Court Of The Crimson Queen

Sat, 16 Jul 2016 22:34:14 +0000

Things look bleak. My radio show has been canceled, an immortal interplanetary empress has ordered an entire sector of the galaxy to kill my brother, I think the lawyer I hired is taking advantage of me, and what's more, my brother keeps ruining my towels and complaining about my milk while he's hiding out in my spare room!

If I'm going to put a stop to all of this, I have to take it to the source. The court of Ruby Resplenda, Monarch of the Scarlet Sector, the Crimson Queen herself.

Moriarty & Pity - A live reading from Balticon 50

Wed, 15 Jun 2016 04:01:00 +0000

One of the great things about Balticon is they ask me to do live readings, which, as you might imagine, since I record my voice for fun, I love doing.

This bit is the beginning of a work in progress starring Moriarty and Pity, characters my wife,J.R. Blackwell, and I created together. They are absolutely horrible people, and I think you'll like them quite a bit.

Queering the Feed - Panel Discussion at Balticon 50

Mon, 13 Jun 2016 16:34:19 +0000

I wasn’t planning on releasing this recording so soon. But in the wake of massacre in Orlando, it appears that queer people simply existing is a radical act. So, here is a panel about queer people existing. I was struck, listening to it again, by how much laughing is in it, how much joy, how much hope. There’s complaints, too, and disappointment and sorrow. But it begins with laughter and ends with an expression of solidarity, and if that’s not a radical reaction to all of this, I don’t know what is.

I’ve made it a point to do these “queer visibility” panels for the past couple of years at Balticon, because, in the words of our forefathers, if you don’t start none, there won’t be none. A month ago, I thought it was important to stand up and be noticed. It’s more important now.

I’ll talk about Balticon properly in a few days, That episode will have a live reading I did. I’m not charging the Patreon supporters for this episode. We’ve all paid enough, already.

In the light of the devastation, discussions like this feel so small. In the light of the devastation, discussions like this feel colossal.

The Impressive Cast of "Son of Planet X"

Fri, 25 Mar 2016 16:00:00 +0000

The Impressive Cast of

This was not an easy episode to do, and I couldn't have done it without these remarkably talented women: newcomer Sonia Williams, VFPX VIP Whitney Strix Beltrán, and Taleisha Bowen. Taleisha, in addition to being a long-time friend and a gifted improvisor, is also a therapist in real life.

Seriously, folks, the caliber of people I get to work with on this show never ceases to astound me.

Episode 15 - Son of Planet X

Tue, 15 Mar 2016 04:01:00 +0000

I don't have a recording of my son, from when he was alive. So I went to a specialist in pediatric phantasmic attachment disorder--ghost children--and a professor of alternate realities, to see if I could, just maybe, talk to him one more time.

The result was a visitation I never could have anticipated.

The Fanastic Cast of "Pledge Drives"

Fri, 11 Mar 2016 17:00:00 +0000

The fantastic cast of the latest #VFPX episode,

How great were these folks? What a cast: Kate Axelrod, Andy Holman and Phil Thomas of West Phillians, Jennifer Steen of Jennisodes, Edison Carter and Ellen Kushner of Sound & Spirit! My cup runneth over.

March Shirt of the Month: Reverend Mord

Wed, 02 Mar 2016 17:00:00 +0000

For March, for your sartorial pleasure, we have none other than the glaring visage of Reverend Mord!

Who wouldn't want that on your chest?

I'm also taking votes on what the Shirt of the Month should be for April. Make your voice heard! I'm curious as which one of these shirts you folks like the most.

Episode 14: Pledge Drives

Tue, 01 Mar 2016 05:01:00 +0000

I get up close and personal with the hosts of other GPR programs: Xy Cuspidstahl and Murph Lopterrange of Wait, Wait, Don't, Just Don't, Cassandra Yondo of Eggs, Craz Ginko of This Betelgeusean Life and the incredible Indra Calphinate Helixion.

But not all of them are people you want to be up close and personal with.

Kevin & Ursula Eat Cheap - A Haiku of Garbage Food

Fri, 15 Jan 2016 12:00:01 +0000

To tide you over until Season 2 of The Voice of Free Planet X begins, here's the time J.R. Blackwell and I visited the home of our dear friends Ursula Vernon and Kevin Sonney and appeared on their show, Kevin and Ursula Eat Cheap. We ate...well, I'll let them tell it:

Our dear friends Jared Axelrod and J.R. Blackwell were visiting this weekend, and brought us a present: a box of hand-made candies shaped like animal poop! Sharing is caring, so we all sat down and shared those. But no show is complete without beer and wine, flavored potato chips, and things best left in the freezer section of your local market, so we had some of that too.

Plus a rye from the wilds of PA, heat-and-eat noodles, and something called "Stage Planks" when We Eat It, So You Don't Have To!

The Stellar Cast of "How's It Gonna End"

Fri, 01 Jan 2016 13:11:25 +0000

The Stellar Cast of

Part of the reason "How's It Gonna End" is so great is the cast, the largest one yet. It's pretty much an all-star cast of my favorite web entertainments: Jason Banks of Talk Nerdy 2 Me, Phil Thomas of West Phillians, and Christiana Ellis of Space Casey & Five More Minutes join VFPX stalwarts Kennedy Allen of The Black Tribbles  and Chris Morse of Supervillian Corner. Rounding out the cast is Whitney Strix Beltrán, making an impressive VFPX debut as a character we're going to see a lot of in the future, and Kate Axelrod, who puts the button on the episode with the practiced disdain that can only come from growing up with me as a brother.

Episode 12 - How's It Gonna End?

Episode 11 - My Wife In Hell

Sat, 19 Dec 2015 04:50:52 +0000

Taking advice from my producer, Thall, I've decided to make this episode more personal, inviting my wife, J.R. Blackwell, to talk about her new job, her coworkers Eddie and Lucifer, Who Is The Morningstar, and the little demon guy Gorgah who is now lives with us and is also a telephone.

Did I mention she works in Hell? She literally works in Hell. The pit of fire and damnation.

It's been difficult to adjust.

Mon, 30 Nov 2015 05:01:00 +0000

Episode 9 - Rebuilt To Last

Sun, 15 Nov 2015 05:01:00 +0000

Ten years ago, the first episode of The Voice of Free Planet X was launched into the ether. It was a about a brief moment in the life of a couple who’s relationship was about to fall apart. It’s an old tale: boy meets girl, girl decides to merge her DNA with a lobster, girl grows a chitinous outer shell and back-spines, boy is uncertain if this is the girl he fell in love with.

By way of celebration, decided to tell that story again.

Happy Birthday, The Voice of Free Planet X. Here's to 10 more years of weirdness.

Shirt of the Month: I SURVIVED MONSTER ISLAND!

It’s October! That means a VoFPX shirt of the month! This one is based on the October 30th episode, Wolf Like Me!

But wait, you say. No one has had a chance to listen to Wolf Like Me yet! And, if you view time as a linear construct, that is certainly true. But I decided to roll out the shirt anyway, because it is, quite frankly, awesome.

Wolf Like Me takes place almost entirely on Mononoke, a island in the Pacific Rim that, due to  the unusually lethal nature of it’s flora and fauna, is more commonly referred to as….Monster Island!!!

They sell these shirts at the airport.

Episode 169 - What We Talk About When We Talk About Con Harrassment

Mon, 04 May 2015 04:01:00 +0000

"What We Talk About When We Talk About Con Harrassment" is an essay I wrote back in 2013, and sadly still applies. With convention season gearing up, now is as good as time as any to say all of this again.

I look forward to the day when this essay is no longer relevant.

Thank You

Tue, 26 Feb 2013 13:40:44 +0000

Thank you, everyone who has made both Fables of the Flying City and The Battle of Blood & Ink the incredible success it has been. It's not been an easy time--especially the past year--but we've gotten through it. And we couldn't have done it without you.

If you'd like to nominate The Battle of Blood & Ink for a Best Graphic Story Hugo Award, the whole process is remarkable easy: If you’re already going to LoneStarCon3, this year’s WorldCon, all you have to do is put “Jared Axelrod & Steve Walker: The Battle of Blood & Ink” in the “Best Graphic Story” section. If you’re not going to WorldCon, but have been to Chicon 7 (the 2012 Worldcon), or have a membership to  Loncon 3 (the 2014 Worldcon) you can still vote! You can also vote if you just want to pay the $60 Supporting Membership, which helps the folks at LoneStarCon, in addition to allowing you to say which science-fiction and fantasy books, tv, movies, zines, podcasts and fan work you think are the bee’s knees.

There’s a lot of great stuff that came out last year, and I suggest you nominate all of it. Just remember to put “Jared Axelrod & Steve Walker: The Battle of Blood & Ink” in the “Best Graphic Story” section!

View from Valhalla - Podcast Review #77: Fables of the Flying City

Tue, 17 May 2011 15:41:00 +0000

Title: Fables of the Flying City
Author: Jared Axelrod
Genre: Steampunk flying adventure
Released: 30 May 2010 – 6 April 2011
Located: Author’s Site, iTunes
Formats Available: podcast
Rating: PG-13 for some violence

Fables of the Flying City had been on my radar since I heard Balticon buzzing about it (via twitter) last year. Of course, then I completely forgot about it until Mainframe (Richard Green) had the author, Jared Axelrod, on his wonderful interview show, Geek Out with Mainframe. I then forgot about it again (seriously, I’m simply terrible sometimes) until I asked Richard to remind me to subscribe. The act of asking someone else to remind me naturally caused me to remember and I subscribed.

So, on to the review.

Synopsis:

Ashe, a young woman from the streets of the flying city of Amperstam learns what it takes to be a member of the Aerial Guard, and finds herself at war with an invading empire and the rulers of the city she has sworn to protect!

Fables of the Flying City is written by Jared Axelrod, with illustrations by Steve Walker and Natalie Kelly. (stolen from author’s site)

Production: Mr. Axelrod, early on shows that he’s not too worried about production and talks to his listeners about different setups he’s experimenting with. These eps are short, often in the range between five and ten minutes. It isn’t unusual for Mr. Axelrod to give his listeners as much metatalk as there is story. Since most of the metatalk I found informative or amusing, I didn’t mind. However, I personally prefer this metatalk to come AFTER the story, but that is only my personal preference.

Grade: C

Cast: Mr. Axelrod does a nice job of self reading most of the story. He has a guest reader for several episodes, but the story is always a single voice. I liked Mr. Axelrod’s readings. He has an infectious quality to his voice that makes your root for his heroine. I preferred his voice to his guests, but again, that is probably just my preference. All were easily understood and read the parts well.

Grade: B

Story: Fables of the Flying City is going to be a graphic novel. This podcast that Mr. Axelrod has provided is actually the prequel to that graphic novel. Having said that, this prequel stands on its own and does what any good prequel should do: makes you care about the characters that will be moving on.

Grade: A

Verdict: I truly enjoyed Fables of the Flying City. It is the first story that I’ve heard that I would classify as true steampunk and not a story with steampunk elements. The characters drive the story and your imagination is used (appropriately) to fill in some of the technology. I always looked forward to hearing the latest episode of Fables of the Flying City and I think you will to. I am very anxious for the graphic novel to make its way into my hands.

Don’t forget, if you send an audio comment to me at Odin1eye at viewfromvalhalla dot com, I’ll include it in the podcast version of this episode next weekend.

Disclosure: I do follow Mr. Axelrod on Twitter and find him quite the intelligent tweeter. I don’t converse with him often or at length. I was not offered a free copy of the graphic novel for review (grinding teeth) or anything else in return for this review.

Episode 160: The Final Episode

Fri, 12 Sep 2008 15:42:00 +0000

If you had asked me 3 years ago if I was ending the Voice of Free Planet X on Episode 160, I’d probably be impressed I stuck with it so long.  Its not been perfect—there’s some loose ends here and there, I’ll do my best to address them in other formats.  But the experiment that was the Voice of Free Planet X is over, and I call it success.  I set out to bring my fiction to a new audience, and while I did that, the downside was that I wasn’t writing as much fiction as I wanted.  So I’m ending the podcast, so I can do what I was doing before the podcast: writing stories.

The Voice of Free Planet X has allowed me to meet a variety of people I would have never met otherwise, some of whom I now count as close friends.  It’s allowed me to play with formats, to listen to new music, and to make things I never would have otherwise.  And for all these things and more, I am grateful.

More than that, it allowed me to connect with one of the most erudite, humorous and dedicated audiences in all of the podiosphere—this is true; I’ve listened to other podcasts feedback episodes.  Thank for listening.  All of you.

This archive and feed will remaining up, as Aliens You Will Meet will continue.  Any guest appearances on other folks shows will appear here, as well.  And, when it’s ready, the first season of Free Planet X TV will be here as well.

As always, thank you for listening.

The world always seems brighter when you've just made something that wasn't there before.

FanboyHell Episode 17:Jared Axelrod Dark Knight Interveiw

Tue, 26 Aug 2008 15:09:00 +0000

In this Episode of FanboyHell with Otakon and other fun and personal stuff going on, I decided to do something a little different. This is my interview with the well spoken and dressed Jared Axelrod of The Voice of Free Planet X and Aliens You Will Meet podcast. I interviewed him a couple of weeks ago in his home. He was nice enough to cook a great dinner for me and MAinPA and sit down and give me some of his thoughts on everything Batman. I apologize if this isn't our normal quality but this is pretty much me and him sitting on the floor in his foyer talking Batman.  We discuss everything The Dark Knight and some Watchmen and the state of comic book movies and honestly there isn't another person I thought was better for the task.  Jared is a huge Batman fan, writer, artist, podcaster, side show performer, puppeteer and one of the most prolific(and good) cosplayers I know. The picture on the cover art, yeah thats him. I just want to warn you there are alot of spoilers and honestly I think everyone should have seen this by now.  Techinically MAinPA is also in the show as well you can hear her and J.R. Blackwell talking in the background the entire time. Hee.

EP171: Fenneman’s Mouth

Wed, 20 Aug 2008 18:38:00 +0000

By Andy Duncan.
Read by Jared Axelrod (of The Voice of Free Planet X).

“Fenneman?”

The studio audience laughed loudly, as it always did when Groucho turned, in mock desperation or annoyance, to his long-suffering, hopelessly square announcer. Groucho’s voice slightly increased in pitch whenever he said Fenneman’s name, as if he were just at the edge of losing his celebrated cool. This half-squawk had been funny in the stateroom scene of A Night at the Opera (”Steward! Steward!”), and it was still funny on You Bet Your Life twenty-five years later. He was a pro, Groucho was, and I did right by him; I modulated that pitch myself.

Rated R. Contains profanity, and real and simulated persons behaving badly.

FanboyHell Video Episode 01: A Moment with Panda

Wed, 30 Jul 2008 09:00:00 +0000

This is a very special video only episode of FanboyHell.  Thursday night, I had the pleasure of going over Jared Axelrod's and J.R. Blackwell's  house to record an interview on the greatness that is Batman The Dark Knight with Jared. After we wrapped that hour and a half interview/conversation (Which as you read this I am still probably editing)  I mentioned that I would also like to interview Panda as well since I am a huge fan of The Voice of Free Planet X.  Jared said he would go upstairs and see if Panda wasn't napping.  So Jared goes upstairs and comes back down with Panda and he is totally up for it. This was meant only to be a audio interview in the beginning but MAinPA decided to record it on our Flip video and upon watching the footage we felt a moral obligation to share this with other Panda fans on the interwebs. In this battle of the minds we get an exclusive announcement with the bear himself about upcoming Panda projects. His thoughts on Kung-Fu Panda and Panda's theory of the internets. This is Panda's first interview, video interview no less and to quote the talented J.R. Blackwell "This is some exclusive shit!" SO ENJOY!

In any case, lots to do before the big day, so in order to get everything ready, I'm going weekly until after the con.  Just one episode on Wednesday, and the an Aliens You Will Meet ep on Thursday.  It'll be rough, but I think we can both make it.

Repetition is a virtue to the citizens of Biscoush, and nothing is more important than doing the same thing over and over every day.  Do not worry about whether or not your visit will disrupt their routine; their Head of Planet has an intergalactic dignitary meeting every day after lunch.  On days when there are no intergalactic dignitaries, the Head of Planet has the meeting anyway, using a hand puppet as a stand-in.  It has been a long time since Biscoush has had an ambassadorial visit, so do not be unnerved when the Head of Planet talks not to you, but to his upraised hand.  It is merely the force of habit.

Episode 151: After Twenty Years

Mon, 14 Jul 2008 04:14:00 +0000

When about midway of a certain block the policeman suddenly slowed his walk. In the doorway of a darkened hardware store a man leaned, with an unlighted cigar in his mouth. As the policeman walked up to him the man spoke up quickly.

"It's all right, officer," he said, reassuringly. "I'm just waiting for a friend. It's an appointment made twenty years ago. Sounds a little funny to you, doesn't it? Well, I'll explain if you'd like to make certain it's all straight...

What is the secret of Matthew Wayne Selznick, author of Brave Men Run?  You'll have to listen to the interview to find out, but may have something to do with this stuff he posted on his website:

"Ladies and gentlemen, on Sunday, July 13, 2008, every hour on the hour for eight hours beginning at 10:00 AM Eastern / 7:00 AM Pacific time, I will present a brand new, original short story set in the first year of the Sovereign Era universe. Episode 149: My Battle With The Editor Hat

Wed, 09 Jul 2008 03:12:00 +0000

I've been working on a beast of a story, and the reason it's a beast of a story is that until very recently, I was trying to write it with my Editor Hat on.

The Editor Hat is a powerful tool, but nothing stops your writing dead quite like it.

It certainly did in my case.

Episode 148: Made To Be Broken

Tue, 08 Jul 2008 03:55:00 +0000

Sergeant Ariel Odipo held back a grimace as her squadron approached the Sepch encampment. She doubted they could see her face through the mirrored visor of her helmet, but she wasn’t taking any chances. She loosened her grip on her rifle as well. The tension was thick enough as it was. This was a peacekeeping mission, after all.

Besides, these people weren't the problem. Odipo had grown fond of their crabby little faces and way they waved their eyestalks when she approached. They were not her problem...

Episode 147: The Middleman Dilemma

Thu, 03 Jul 2008 03:42:00 +0000

Yeah, J.R. Blackwell and I love our television, like any good nerds.  We love The Middleman.  We love Doctor Who.  But having long since deep-sixed the cable, we cannot watch them the moment the come on the boob-tube.

Also, we don't live in the United Kingdom.

Naturally, as podcasters, we turn to the internets to solve all our problems.  But there is no legitimate way to download the shows we love.  We'd pay for it, if only we COULD.

But we can't.  There is no way to legitimate get the shows we want in any reasonable amount of time.  Waiting months for the DVD is, quite frankly, unacceptable.

Forced by neglect, we do the only thing we can.  We turn to piracy.

And we aren't happy about it, neither.

Episode 138: The Importance of Being Dada

Sun, 08 Jun 2008 03:57:00 +0000

We are indebted to Tristan Tzara and his followers for the newest and perhaps the most important doctrinary insistence as applied to art which has appeared in a long time. Dada-ism is the latest phase of modernism in painting as well as in literature, and carries with it all the passion for freedom of expression which Marinetti sponsored so loudly in his futuristic manifestos. It adds likewise an exhilarating quality of nihilism, imbibed, as it is said, directly from the author of Zarathustra. Reading a fragment of the documentary statement of Dada-ism, we find that the charm of the idea exists mainly in the fact that they wish all things levelled in the mind of man to the degree of commonplaceness which is typical and peculiar to it.

Nothing is greater than anything else, is what the Dada believes...

Also, the recipe for Irish Nachos:

1 bag kettle chips
6 ounces finely grated Cheddar, approximately 2 1/4 cups
4 slices of bacon, cooked and crumbled
2 tablespoons finely chopped green onions
2 cups sour cream

Set 1 of the oven racks on the lowest shelf and preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Lay the chips on a baking sheet. Sprinkle the chips with the Cheddar cheese and the bacon. Bake in the oven on the bottom rack for 7 minutes or until the cheese begins to bubble. Spoon sour cream on top, and sprinkle green onions

Just about every episode of the past week was commented on, which is nothing short of astounding.  Clearly, I’m doing something right.  Some of the noteworthy elements:

•    I am an enabler
•    Mash-ups are a moral gray area
•    Some feedback is better responded to in character
•    Our meat, and how we treat it.
•    Backup daily to avoid data loss!
•    The races of fantasy characters
•    The laughter of Nobilis
•    The Duncan Brothers deserve money!

Mon, 19 May 2008 02:00:00 +0000

Robert Downey Jr, as weapons manufacturer Tony Stark, poses that question in the visceral opening to IRON MAN. Stark goes on to say that you can have both, and indeed, that’s been the American Way since we dropped the bomb on Hiroshima

This summer’s other cinematic offering from Marvel Comics, THE INCREDIBLE HULK, tackles the atom bomb through an angry, green metaphor, but IRON MAN goes at it direct.

It’s not an unusual premise to hoist a superhero movie on—it was one of the many themes playing out in the over-stuffed SPIDER-MAN 3, for example—but Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, the writing team that also gave us last year’s CHILDREN OF MEN, having something more bleak in mind...

Episode 123: Things We Say About Movies, In Bed

Wed, 14 May 2008 03:09:00 +0000

With Panda holding the microphone, J.R. Blackwell and I discuss the finer points of fantasy entertainment as exemplified by three films we watched recently:

Iron Man: ironmanmovie.marvel.com
Speed Racer: speedracerthemovie.warnerbros.com
Hogfather: www.hogfatherdvd.com

Also discussed is the level of violence appropriate for children, why life-and-death situations get me upset and the glorification of materialism in modern, over-the-top summer cinema.

And, yes, all three of us were in bed.  But Panda’s always there.

Episode 122: We're All Standing Right Here

Tue, 13 May 2008 01:14:00 +0000

C.A. Sizemore, all-around good guy and long-time listener of the show, lost his wife Kelly this morning.  I only know him through the internet, through Twitter and through his calls to show, but this has still hit me hard.  Maybe it's because the third anniversary of my father's death was only a few weeks ago.

Or maybe no one should have to loose a loved one.

But we do.  And in times like these, it's good to know that someone like C.A., who was just nicest guy you'll meet, has engendered such goodwill that a fund in his name has reached over $1000: casizemoregift.chipin.com/ca-sizemore

That, my friends, is all the faith in humanity one needs.

Episode 120: The Proper Preperation Of Children

Sun, 11 May 2008 03:38:00 +0000

The first assumption is that you can procure a whole, fully-dressed child. In some parts of the country this might be easier than in others. Figure on about 1.25 to 2 lbs per person of dressed child. For the wedding we had a 160 lb child (husky fella, that one)to feed about 100 people. This was supplemented with thighs, (a trackstar, naturally) and many other dishes. At another event, the child weighed 60 lbs and fed about 30 people.

Another assumption is that you have a safe environment for storing the child from the time you abduct it to the time you begin cooking it. It doesn’t matter how good something tastes or what sensations a food item gives you, if it isn’t safe to eat, you’re going to be in serious trouble. Fortunately, the FDA provides some simple guidelines you can follow to help ensure safe storage....

Aliens You Will Meet - The Docalleral

Fri, 09 May 2008 00:38:00 +0000

The aquatic Docalleral spoken language has defied all attempts of translations, as the atonal singing they produce is as much dependent on the condition and temperature of the water as it is on inflections of the speaker. They also have extremely short memories and refuse to speak with anyone who cannot properly breath underwater. It is then suggested that you do not meet them at all, but rather send a polite note saying you have already met them, and that they enjoyed your company immensely.

Episode 118: Even In Arcadia, Part 2

Thu, 08 May 2008 02:21:00 +0000

The rest of the staff echoed Molly's warm sentiments, and greeted Leroy pleasantly, and although he still wasn't sure of all their names--he already confused the cook Anatole with the hallboy Eustace, and no idea the kitchen girls names, though they each just told him--he felt very familiar with all of them.  Cogs had warned him not to get too familiar, as he would be spending most of his time with the family, but Leroy couldn't help it, and told Cogs so.

"I'm only human, after all," Leroy said.  That got a chuckle out of Cogs.

Episode 117: Even In Arcadia, Part 1

Tue, 06 May 2008 03:47:00 +0000

The thin man's eyes were cold.  They reminded Sir Edward of nothing so much  as the moon that poked that shown through the window.  The moon was bright tonight, and it's glow made the thin young man seem unearthly.

"This is a frightfully good letter of recommendation," Sir Edward said.  "Frightfully good.  Lord Smitters speaks very highly of you. Almost higher than he spoke of Cogs. Cogs, you know Mr. Leroy here, back when you were with Smitters?"

Cogs, Sir Edward's butler, knew that Lord Smitters has been deceased for quite some time.  He also knew that there was a man now living in Lord Smitters house, who looked like Lord Smitters, sounded like Lord Smitters and, most importantly, signed references with a signature indistinguishable from the one used by Lord Smitters....

“The readiness is all,? says Hamlet, but is it really? How do we know we’re ready, really?  The catch is, the only way to know you’re ready is to throw yourself out there, and see if you are.

I didn’t feel I was ready, this weekend.  I wasn’t ready to pitch a comic, and certainly not at a convention as nuts as New York Comic Con.  I didn’t feel like what I had to show was “good enough.?

But, as listeners of this show know, “Crap is published all the time.?

Episode 109: What The Damned Owe

Barry Sturgeon calmly put down the file his accountant had given him, carefully cut the ring finger on his left hand, and drew a summoning circle on the floor in his own blood.  As the hardwood inside the circle crumbled and fell away to reveal the pit of flames beneath, Sturgeon sighed inwardly.  His demon would know what to do about this tax mess.

I had merely requested a valet from the agency, and they said one would be sent, and gave no further description other than he would be up to their impeccable standards.

Episode 93: Son Of Steel

Wed, 26 Mar 2008 02:27:00 +0000

Tristan was methodically taking apart his hands when the doorbell chimed. He jumped at the sound, going to the door in such a hurry that he left behind the joints and pieces of his left hand on the worktable. All nine of Tristan’s eyes blinked and strobed expectantly, wanting to know if this was it, what he had been waiting for, the final piece...

Episode 92: A Conversation With Panda

Tue, 25 Mar 2008 03:02:00 +0000

I've been feeling a little depressed recently--listening to back-to-back personal narratives about being a Jew in Nazi-occupied Poland and about being a black woman in America before the Civil Rights movement will do that--and I didn't feel I had anywhere to turn.

Luckily, a little stuffed panda was there to talk it all over with me.

Steampunk Spectacular The Second

Mon, 24 Mar 2008 01:03:00 +0000

Welcome back to the HMS Astrolabe! We suffered some delays in making port this time, but I hope that you will find this installment was worth the wait.

The sights available from the observation deck this week include The Clockwork Ball, Unofficial Fop Day, FreakAngels, and In Timely Fashion (being a compendium of era hairstyle instructions with photonic illustrations), and SepiaChord. Other diversions include the launch of an original flash fiction series called Six Score and Twenty by Matt Wallace, and the first of what we hope to be many sartorial lessons from Jared Axelrod.

Today’s salon is a conversation with the inestimable Magpie Killjoy of Steampunk Magazine.

Thank you for joining us!

Aliens You Will Meet - The Glackple

Fri, 21 Mar 2008 02:21:00 +0000

The gravity of the Glackple homeworld is many times greater than what you are used to. As such, you will feel weighty, leaden, and bloated while on the planet’s surface.  Stay away from the Glackple’s honorary sausage. While a much sought-after-delicacy, it will only increase your feelings of heaviness.

In either case, you should consider excusing yourself from the after-diner high jump competition.

Earth was still in view, though it was slowly shrinking amongst the black. “You have one of the most gorgeous planets in the galaxy, yet you all are constantly wandering away from
it.?

Lucky allowed himself a chuckle and stepped closer to the bundle of flesh and tentacles that was his co-pilot. He placed what he hoped was a comforting hand on Jaeg and watched her soft flesh change color at his touch. “We often don’t understand ourselves…

Thu, 06 Mar 2008 04:30:00 +0000

Amateur aerialist and professional inventor, Heronymous Dash managed to combine these disciplines with his greatest invention yet: the time-ship Forteana.

The able-bodied crew of the Forteana--vampire queen Sanguine Bathory, legendary Persian warrior Rostam, pilot/chef Guillaume Pomplemous, plucky 12-year-old Harper Bly from the far-flung future of 1964, and of course, Dash himself-- are out to prove once and for all that heroism is, indeed, timeless.

But how will they fare when their adventures take them deep into the heart of the Mesozoic Era?

Case in point, one Miss Holly Johnson, currently interning at Longwood Gardens. She's studying pest management, teaching the right kinds of pest to take care of the wrong kind of pests for us.  Which is why she knows things like why petting a velvet ant is never good idea and that it's good to have a dragonfly on your defense.  She was visiting in order to model for J.R., and her stories were so fascinating, I just turned on the mic and let her go.

Tue, 19 Feb 2008 04:42:00 +0000

They called the ship a Widowmaker, a relic of a time when the black of space was scarred by the war and the machines that made it possible. There were no windows save at the top and few doors; little was done to make the metal monstrosity look like anything other than the heavily armed coffin it was. It towered over the edge of the city, and Fire Chief Jaime Olmos felt cold and clammy every time he had to drive beneath its shadow. He had argued with the city about taking it down and scrapping it. But no one saw the tower of metal-encased kindling on insufficient struts, a danger to the community around it. They only saw a tourist offering, a landmark...

EP145: Instead of a Loving Heart

Fri, 15 Feb 2008 01:53:00 +0000

By Jeremiah Tolbert.
Read by Jared Axelrod (of The Voice of Free Planet X).
First appeared in All-Star Zeppelin Adventure Stories (ed. David Moles & Jay Lake).

We are somewhere among the tallest mountains of the world. When we arrived, I was locked away in a cargo hold, so I don’t know exactly where. Our home is a small, drafty castle and a separate laboratory. Dr. Octavio had the locals construct the lab before he tested the new death ray on their village. There’s very little left there. In my little bit of spare time, I try to bury the bodies and collect anything useful to the doctor’s experiment.

My primary duties consist of keeping the castle’s furnace running and clearing the never-ending snow from the path between the two buildings. Sometimes, it falls too fast for my slow treads and shovel attachment to keep up with and I find myself half-buried in the snow. It is horrible on my gears when this happens, but I use heavyweight oil now and it helps.

It is one of the few benefits of my metal frame that I appreciate. Life in this contraption is like being wrapped in swaddling clothes. I wonder if I would feel anything if my casing caught on fire? I need to ask the doctor when he isn’t in one of his moods.

Rated PG. Parental guidance suggested for violence and ennui.

Read by Jared Axelrod (of The Department of Public Words).
"I read an interesting forum post last night,? my electric toothbrush told me over its low burr."

"Thiff ouff thew be thood," I said through my mouth of foam.

“It was!? he replied. “Using readily available components, Monkeymonkey turned his Intellibrush into a milk frother."

I spit into the sink and set my toothbrush in its white ceramic charger. "What would I do with a milk frother?"

"Make cappucinos," my toothbrush said, with a hint of resignation, as I rinsed and spit again.

"I don’t drink cappucinos," I said.

"You could start!"

Episode 48: THE WATER'S FINE

Tue, 10 Jul 2007 04:48:00 +0000

In the St. Lawrence River, the one that goes from NY to Canada, biologists have discovered pods of beluga whales with cancer. Not just with cancer, but with the highest cancer rates of any wild animal studied. Some of the dead whales are so suffused with pollutants that they qualify as hazardous waste.

Researchers have also found something else in the river: Botulism. Botulism is a disease caused by a bacterial toxin that cause paralysis, and, if not properly treated, death. It's in the fish, in the birds, the entire wildlife. It's in the soil.

And it's beautiful place. Even in the danger area, the "Area of Concern," as the Environmental Protection Agency calls it. It's one of the prettiest rivers you'll see.

This is a river that is still fished in. It is a river that people bring their families to, to boat and swim in. This river, home to toxins, to cancerous animals is frequently swam in by children.

As the world around us becomes slowly poisoned, we are determined to not let it ruin our routines. Guest reader and composer Russell Collins explores this bizarre form of courage in this episode, THE WATER'S FINE.

Russell Collins is a musical composer and singer. In addition to reading the preceding story, he also wrote the performed the score, as well as the VoFPX theme. You can find out more about Russell atwww.clockworkaudio.net

Pseudopod 041: Fingerbones Hung Like Mobiles

Thu, 21 Jun 2007 19:16:00 +0000

By Paul Jessup

Read by Jared Axelrod

“These woods are filled with spirits,? she said, “Not like the spirits of the dead. Older spirits. My grandma told me about them. She said that once these spirits used to help people, they were noble and good. And then people stopped praying to them. Stopped giving them food and friendship. Now the spirits are sick, and they wander these woods looking for companionship.?

Brad laughed and drank some of the vodka.

“What a load of shit,? Brad said, “Is that supposed to be scary, huh Carla? I don’t buy it. Not one bit.?

Little Man looked nervous. It was hard to reconcile this story with what we saw only a few hours ago. “Don’t worry Little Man,? Brad said, “Carla’s just pulling our legs. Ain’t that right??

Episode 47: CURSE

Wed, 30 May 2007 05:40:00 +0000

Michael Winerip is a writer for the New York Times and an alumus of Harvard. In a recent column, "Young, Gifted, and Not Getting Into Harvard," he talks about the multitudes of young teenagers who come to him for an interveiw, in the hopes of getting into his alma mater. None of them do.

Winerip describes a girl who, during summer vacation, left her house before 7 each morning to make a two-hour train ride to a major university, where she worked all day doing cutting-edge research for NASA on weightlessness in mice.

Let me repeat that. This girl's summer job consisted of working with NASA on the effects of weightlessness. Space travel. She did not get in to Harvard.

Another, a boy, did cancer research in the summer. He played two instruments in three orchestras; and composed his own music. He redid the computer system for his student paper, loved to cook and was writing his own cookbook. One of his specialties was snapper poached in tea and served with noodle cake.

And yet, these kids, despite their brilliance, their drive, their perfect SAT scores, their AP classwork and their parental assistance and assurance, kids who you'd think any college would be begging for them to come to, these kids do not get into Harvard. They do not get in Yale, they do not get into Princeton.

Because it just isn't enough. Not anymore.

What would you do, then, as a parent, to give your child an edge? How far would you go? How much would it cost, and how much would you be willing to pay? Guest reader Mur Laferty explores these possiblities in this episode's story.
