A note about the audio: We had some wonderful mics provided for us by Bridge Set Sound, but I wrote an episode that had everyone running all all over the place. So, some parts were not picked up by the good mics, and I've edited in bits recorded by my handheld recorder that I had going just in case. I've tried to make the edits as unobtrusive as possible, but there is a difference in sound quality.

If you live in the Kingdom of Cyriania, you’ve heard about the Feltrain Festival. The Feltrain Festival is an annual tradition in Cyriania, an all-night dance party, and one of the few that is, by tradition, unsegregated. All are welcome at Feltrain: Elves, Dwarves, Humans, Tanuki, Great Eagles, everyone. It’s often held up as a sign of Cyriania’s social progress, that ever since the fall of the Dark Lord Necron and the breaking of his bone throne, Cyriania has been moving forward.
This year, however, that illusion was shattered when Huber Heknut walked up to the Feltrain Festival and pulled out a magic sword that released a poison gas that killed 50 people at the festival in a matter of seconds.
Every tavern and inn conversation asks the same questions Should magic swords be banned? Or are magic swords an unalienable right? And what does the Raptor Queen have to say about all this?

Queering the Feed - Panel Discussion at Balticon 50

I wasn’t planning on releasing this recording so soon. But in the wake of massacre in Orlando, it appears that queer people simply existing is a radical act. So, here is a panel about queer people existing. I was struck, listening to it again, by how much laughing is in it, how much joy, how much hope. There’s complaints, too, and disappointment and sorrow. But it begins with laughter and ends with an expression of solidarity, and if that’s not a radical reaction to all of this, I don’t know what is.
I’ve made it a point to do these “queer visibility” panels for the past couple of years at Balticon, because, in the words of our forefathers, if you don’t start none, there won’t be none. A month ago, I thought it was important to stand up and be noticed. It’s more important now.
I’ll talk about Balticon properly in a few days, That episode will have a live reading I did. I’m not charging the Patreon supporters for this episode. We’ve all paid enough, already.

I don't have a recording of my son, from when he was alive. So I went to a specialist in pediatric phantasmic attachment disorder--ghost children--and a professor of alternate realities, to see if I could, just maybe, talk to him one more time.

Our dear friends Jared Axelrod and J.R. Blackwell were visiting this weekend, and brought us a present: a box of hand-made candies shaped like animal poop! Sharing is caring, so we all sat down and shared those. But no show is complete without beer and wine, flavored potato chips, and things best left in the freezer section of your local market, so we had some of that too.
Plus a rye from the wilds of PA, heat-and-eat noodles, and something called "Stage Planks" when We Eat It, So You Don't Have To!

Part of the reason "How's It Gonna End" is so great is the cast, the largest one yet. It's pretty much an all-star cast of my favorite web entertainments: Jason Banks of Talk Nerdy 2 Me, Phil Thomas of West Phillians, and Christiana Ellis of Space Casey & Five More Minutes join VFPX stalwarts Kennedy Allen of The Black Tribbles and Chris Morse of Supervillian Corner. Rounding out the cast is Whitney Strix Beltrán, making an impressive VFPX debut as a character we're going to see a lot of in the future, and Kate Axelrod, who puts the button on the episode with the practiced disdain that can only come from growing up with me as a brother.

Ten years ago, the first episode of The Voice of Free Planet X was launched into the ether. It was a about a brief moment in the life of a couple who’s relationship was about to fall apart. It’s an old tale: boy meets girl, girl decides to merge her DNA with a lobster, girl grows a chitinous outer shell and back-spines, boy is uncertain if this is the girl he fell in love with.
By way of celebration, decided to tell that story again.

Fables of the Flying City had been on my radar since I heard Balticon buzzing about it (via twitter) last year. Of course, then I completely forgot about it until Mainframe (Richard Green) had the author, Jared Axelrod, on his wonderful interview show, Geek Out with Mainframe. I then forgot about it again (seriously, I’m simply terrible sometimes) until I asked Richard to remind me to subscribe. The act of asking someone else to remind me naturally caused me to remember and I subscribed.
So, on to the review.
Synopsis:
Ashe, a young woman from the streets of the flying city of Amperstam learns what it takes to be a member of the Aerial Guard, and finds herself at war with an invading empire and the rulers of the city she has sworn to protect!
Fables of the Flying City is written by Jared Axelrod, with illustrations by Steve Walker and Natalie Kelly. (stolen from author’s site)
Production: Mr. Axelrod, early on shows that he’s not too worried about production and talks to his listeners about different setups he’s experimenting with. These eps are short, often in the range between five and ten minutes. It isn’t unusual for Mr. Axelrod to give his listeners as much metatalk as there is story. Since most of the metatalk I found informative or amusing, I didn’t mind. However, I personally prefer this metatalk to come AFTER the story, but that is only my personal preference.
Grade: C
Cast: Mr. Axelrod does a nice job of self reading most of the story. He has a guest reader for several episodes, but the story is always a single voice. I liked Mr. Axelrod’s readings. He has an infectious quality to his voice that makes your root for his heroine. I preferred his voice to his guests, but again, that is probably just my preference. All were easily understood and read the parts well.
Grade: B
Story: Fables of the Flying City is going to be a graphic novel. This podcast that Mr. Axelrod has provided is actually the prequel to that graphic novel. Having said that, this prequel stands on its own and does what any good prequel should do: makes you care about the characters that will be moving on.
Grade: A
Verdict: I truly enjoyed Fables of the Flying City. It is the first story that I’ve heard that I would classify as true steampunk and not a story with steampunk elements. The characters drive the story and your imagination is used (appropriately) to fill in some of the technology. I always looked forward to hearing the latest episode of Fables of the Flying City and I think you will to. I am very anxious for the graphic novel to make its way into my hands.

If you had asked me 3 years ago if I was ending the Voice of Free Planet X on Episode 160, I’d probably be impressed I stuck with it so long. Its not been perfect—there’s some loose ends here and there, I’ll do my best to address them in other formats. But the experiment that was the Voice of Free Planet X is over, and I call it success. I set out to bring my fiction to a new audience, and while I did that, the downside was that I wasn’t writing as much fiction as I wanted. So I’m ending the podcast, so I can do what I was doing before the podcast: writing stories.
The Voice of Free Planet X has allowed me to meet a variety of people I would have never met otherwise, some of whom I now count as close friends. It’s allowed me to play with formats, to listen to new music, and to make things I never would have otherwise. And for all these things and more, I am grateful.
More than that, it allowed me to connect with one of the most erudite, humorous and dedicated audiences in all of the podiosphere—this is true; I’ve listened to other podcasts feedback episodes. Thank for listening. All of you.
This archive and feed will remaining up, as Aliens You Will Meet will continue. Any guest appearances on other folks shows will appear here, as well. And, when it’s ready, the first season of Free Planet X TV will be here as well.

In this Episode of FanboyHell with Otakon and other fun and personal
stuff going on, I decided to do something a little different. This is
my interview with the well spoken and dressed Jared Axelrod of The Voice of Free Planet X and Aliens You Will Meet
podcast. I interviewed him a couple of weeks ago in his home. He was
nice enough to cook a great dinner for me and MAinPA and sit down and
give me some of his thoughts on everything Batman. I apologize if this
isn't our normal quality but this is pretty much me and him sitting on
the floor in his foyer talking Batman. We discuss everything The Dark
Knight and some Watchmen and the state of comic book movies and
honestly there isn't another person I thought was better for the task.
Jared is a huge Batman fan, writer, artist, podcaster, side show
performer, puppeteer and one of the most prolific(and good) cosplayers
I know. The picture on the cover art, yeah thats him. I just want to
warn you there are alot of spoilers and honestly I think everyone
should have seen this by now. Techinically MAinPA is also in the show
as well you can hear her and J.R. Blackwell talking in the background
the entire time. Hee.

Do not worry about whether or not your visit will disrupt their routine; their Head of Planet has an intergalactic dignitary meeting every day after lunch. On days when there are no intergalactic dignitaries, the Head of Planet has the meeting anyway, using a hand puppet as a stand-in. It has been a long time since Biscoush has had an ambassadorial visit, so do not be unnerved when the Head of Planet talks not to you, but to his upraised hand. It is merely the force of habit.

Sergeant Ariel Odipo held back a grimace as her squadron approached the Sepch encampment. She doubted they could see her face through the mirrored visor of her helmet, but she wasn’t taking any chances. She loosened her grip on her rifle as well. The tension was thick enough as it was. This was a peacekeeping mission, after all.
Besides, these people weren't the problem. Odipo had grown fond of their crabby little faces and way they waved their eyestalks when she approached. They were not her problem...

Yeah, J.R. Blackwell and I love our television, like any good nerds. We love The Middleman. We love Doctor Who. But having long since deep-sixed the cable, we cannot watch them the moment the come on the boob-tube.
Also, we don't live in the United Kingdom.
Naturally, as podcasters, we turn to the internets to solve all our problems. But there is no legitimate way to download the shows we love. We'd pay for it, if only we COULD.
But we can't. There is no way to legitimate get the shows we want in any reasonable amount of time. Waiting months for the DVD is, quite frankly, unacceptable.
Forced by neglect, we do the only thing we can. We turn to piracy.
And we aren't happy about it, neither.

Episode 137: Feedback And Forth

Feedback's packed tight tonight, as I talk about alot of things, but mainly extend Episode 136, only a little more rambley. Most of the rambling is directed toward Chris Lester's excellent essay which comes really close to being right, and then misses the point completely. Close, though. Real close. You should read it. Set 1 of the oven racks on the lowest shelf and preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Also, the recipe for Irish Nachos:
1 bag kettle chips
6 ounces finely grated Cheddar, approximately 2 1/4 cups
4 slices of bacon, cooked and crumbled
2 tablespoons finely chopped green onions
2 cups sour cream
Lay the chips on a baking sheet. Sprinkle the chips with the Cheddar cheese and the bacon. Bake in the oven on the bottom
rack for 7 minutes or until the cheese begins to bubble. Spoon sour cream on top, and sprinkle green onions

Balticon is over, but before we can enjoy its audio bounty, we must first take care of some pre-Balticon business. Namely, feedback.
Just about every episode of the past week was commented on, which is nothing short of astounding. Clearly, I’m doing something right. Some of the noteworthy elements:

There’s a part of the horizon where the sand meets the sky, and the clouds look low and tangible. You can’t touch them—you know you can’t touch them, but they look so close. So ready.
“It’s a fool’s errand, you know,” the wise man says. “The air is for the birds, and the bees. To do otherwise would be something akin to madness.
But I stay here, and I try. I’ve built my wings of lighter and stronger material every time. And everytime I crash into the sand, I see that for a moment, the sand flies into the air too.
This is the first in a series of Site Specific Stories, impromptu fiction created in response to a specific environment. It was written and recorded at Jockey's Ridge State Park.

Episode 120: The Proper Preperation Of Children

The first assumption is that you can procure a
whole, fully-dressed child. In some parts of the country this might be
easier than in others. Figure on about 1.25 to 2 lbs per person of
dressed child. For the wedding we had a 160 lb child (husky fella, that
one)to feed about 100 people. This was supplemented with thighs,
(a trackstar, naturally) and many other dishes. At another event, the child
weighed 60 lbs and fed about 30 people.
Another assumption is
that you have a safe environment for storing the child from the time
you abduct it to the time you begin cooking it. It doesn’t matter how
good something tastes or what sensations a food item gives you, if it
isn’t safe to eat, you’re going to be in serious trouble. Fortunately,
the FDA provides some simple guidelines you can follow to help ensure
safe storage....

They also have extremely short memories and refuse to speak with anyone who cannot properly breath underwater. It is then suggested that you do not meet them at all, but rather send a polite note saying you have already met them, and that they enjoyed your company immensely.

Cogs had warned him not to get too familiar, as he would be spending most of his time with the family, but Leroy couldn't help it, and told Cogs so.
"I'm only human, after all," Leroy said. That got a chuckle out of Cogs.

"This is a frightfully good letter of recommendation," Sir Edward said. "Frightfully good. Lord Smitters speaks very highly of you. Almost higher than he spoke of Cogs. Cogs, you know Mr. Leroy here, back when you were with Smitters?"
Cogs, Sir Edward's butler, knew that Lord Smitters has been deceased for quite some time. He also knew that there was a man now living in Lord Smitters house, who looked like Lord Smitters, sounded like Lord Smitters and, most importantly, signed references with a signature indistinguishable from the one used by Lord Smitters....

After that fateful night at The Gears, everyone asks how I met Archer, if I picked him out from the agency’s catalogue or if he was recommended to me by someone else and other such questions, when in truth I must confess that I had never met him before he showed up upon my doorstep. I had merely requested a valet from the agency, and they said one would be sent, and gave no further description other than he would be up to their impeccable standards.
He rang the bell at exactly the second upon the hour he was to arrive, and I found myself unexpectedly worried. Had the agency sent a robot?

make the metal monstrosity look like anything other than the heavily
armed coffin it was. It towered over the edge of the city, and Fire
Chief Jaime Olmos felt cold and clammy every time he had to drive
beneath its shadow. He had argued with the city about taking it down
and scrapping it. But no one saw the tower of metal-encased kindling on
insufficient struts, a danger to the community around it. They only saw
a tourist offering, a landmark...

We are somewhere among the tallest mountains of the world. When we arrived, I was locked away in a cargo hold, so I don’t know exactly where. Our home is a small, drafty castle and a separate laboratory. Dr. Octavio had the locals construct the lab before he tested the new death ray on their village. There’s very little left there. In my little bit of spare time, I try to bury the bodies and collect anything useful to the doctor’s experiment.
My primary duties consist of keeping the castle’s furnace running and clearing the never-ending snow from the path between the two buildings. Sometimes, it falls too fast for my slow treads and shovel attachment to keep up with and I find myself half-buried in the snow. It is horrible on my gears when this happens, but I use heavyweight oil now and it helps.
It is one of the few benefits of my metal frame that I appreciate. Life in this contraption is like being wrapped in swaddling clothes. I wonder if I would feel anything if my casing caught on fire? I need to ask the doctor when he isn’t in one of his moods.

In the St. Lawrence River, the one that goes from NY to Canada, biologists have discovered pods of beluga whales with cancer. Not just with cancer, but with the highest cancer rates of any wild animal studied. Some of the dead whales are so suffused with pollutants that they qualify as hazardous waste. Researchers have also found something else in the river: Botulism. Botulism is a disease caused by a bacterial toxin that cause paralysis, and, if not properly treated, death. It's in the fish, in the birds, the entire wildlife. It's in the soil. And it's beautiful place. Even in the danger area, the "Area of Concern," as the Environmental Protection Agency calls it. It's one of the prettiest rivers you'll see. This is a river that is still fished in. It is a river that people bring their families to, to boat and swim in. This river, home to toxins, to cancerous animals is frequently swam in by children. As the world around us becomes slowly poisoned, we are determined to not let it ruin our routines. Michael Winerip is a writer for the New York Times and an alumus of Harvard. In a recent column, "Young, Gifted, and Not Getting Into Harvard," he talks about the multitudes of young teenagers who come to him for an interveiw, in the hopes of getting into his alma mater. None of them do. Winerip describes a girl who, during summer vacation, left her house before 7 each morning to make a two-hour train ride to a major university, where she worked all day doing cutting-edge research for NASA on weightlessness in mice. Let me repeat that. This girl's summer job consisted of working with NASA on the effects of weightlessness. Space travel. She did not get in to Harvard. Another, a boy, did cancer research in the summer. He played two instruments in three orchestras; and composed his own music. He redid the computer system for his student paper, loved to cook and was writing his own cookbook. One of his specialties was snapper poached in tea and served with noodle cake. And yet, these kids, despite their brilliance, their drive, their perfect SAT scores, their AP classwork and their parental assistance and assurance, kids who you'd think any college would be begging for them to come to, these kids do not get into Harvard. They do not get in Yale, they do not get into Princeton. Because it just isn't enough. Not anymore. What would you do, then, as a parent, to give your child an edge? How far would you go?
